Jump Start Pack JNC vs. JNC

Question for the experts......I have a Diesel F350 and a Small Honda SUV. New batteries all around, but still like to have a Jump Start Pack for those little moments in life.

After much research, I have narrowed it down to the JNC660 or the JNC950

Is the 660 enough for the diesel...or is the 950 the way to go?

Thank you in advance folks!

I have the 660, on a completely dead diesel, it will crank it, but not for long, and it doesn't crank as fast as a set of good working batteries. If there are no problems with the truck, and its just a simple dead battery, it works fine. If there is a problem that requires extended cranking (10-15 seconds) with weak or dead batteries, I usually only get one or two shots before its too weak to try again.

Thank you Matt! Just wondering if it's really worth it to get the 950.

Buy the 950, the 660 will not crank a diesel well. At work we use 2 660's or a 660 and a set of cables off the truck.

Considering you're going to use it on a diesel I would get the larger pack. I've had limited luck with dead diesels and jump packs.

I have the 950 and it's an animal but it overkill for most people who could get by with a 660

But with the fact that you have a diesel just buy the 950 you won't regret it. Mine is 5 years and still going strong

JNC950 for $300 is quite expensive.
I'd probably just carry a spare battery and jump cables, it's far cheaper.

It's not the same the jnc 950 put outs 2000 peak amps of power. No car batteries put out that kind of power. The high amp deep cycle battery is what keeps the starter turning time after time after time without needing to be recharged

We bailed a guy out tonight got a call I just left the shop pulled a U-turn a guy was stuck on the side of the main road alternator was burnt up and not charging the battery truck had 8 volts my buddy couldn't get the guys truck jumped with cables so I came down with the jump pack clean off the terminals and it started in three seconds.

The jump pack totally kicks ***

In a forum full of well informed auto guys of above average knowledge, I'm surprised I don't see this brought up more often when jump boxes are discussed. The peak amp rating on any box, in this case 2000 peak amps for the JNC 950, can can be ignored. It's an arbitrary number, the manufacturer can use any methodology they wish to determine it.
The important numbers to look for are CCA and CA, which are well defined and independently verified. CA is the number of amps sustained for 30 seconds at 32° F, while CCA is the same measurement at 0° F. So your JNC 950 is actually rated at 950 CA, hence the model number. As a generally accurate rule of thumb you can multiply by .8 to approximate CCA and you get 760, which matches the common Wal-Mart battery in my half ton.
Is the JNC more capable than my trucks battery? Yes, it has a higher reserve capacity. It's also not a true deep cycle battery, drop it below 10 volts too many times and it's toast.
The 950 actually uses the same internal battery as the 660, if I remember correctly, but has two of them. Why this doesn't double all the specs except voltage is not something I fully understand. That being said, both boxes are awesome and I own both.

Main thing is a car only pouts out so much at idle or revving it up. The boost box has the power on demand asap. Also the length and thickness of cables greatly helps. Longer cables that arent all that thick lose power. At work my JNC660 cables bit the dust after thousands of hours of use, got 1/0 welding cable and mine seems to be a slight bit stronger than the others that use 2/0 cable.

I have the JNC660. I also have an older 7.3 F350 and a couple of newer Toyotas.

I've been happy with the 660 and while a set of quality cables and spare battery may be more versatile it is certainly not more convenient than the fully self contained jump packs. I got my 660 off amazon for $130ish. The larger JNC is awesome but it wasn't worth the extra $$ for occasional use especially since I try to keep up on the 7.3's electrical system.

I'm not sure you could even buy a quality, appropriately rated battery; charger and cables for what a JNC costs.
