Gentleman,

The time has come for my lathe to be upgraded. My Sheldon R15 has served me splendidly, and I love it dearly, but its not big enough. If I had an unlimited budget and space to match, I would keep it in a heartbeat. However, a deal has come up that is too good to turn down, which means the Sheldon has to go.

Never fear, we can't be without a lathe. I lined up a deal where my new iron would be dropped off by the guy buying my Sheldon.

Here she is, a LeBlond Regal 19"x 80" Servo Shift. Replaceable ways hard to 60 Rockwell C, metric and standard quick change gearbox, and a 3" spindle bore.

It came well tooled, 12" Kalamazoo 3 jaw chuck, 14" 4 jaw maker TBD, Aloris CA QCTP and a couple holders, steady rest, Accurite DRO, live center, taper attachment, micrometer stop, and a work light.

I had to play advanced shop tetris to maneuver the forklift with this large lathe on the forks, so most of my shop ended up in the parking lot for a few hours while we did the swap.

My electrician buddy Keith didn't waste any time while the Sheldon was being loaded. He's already re-wiring the motor for 480v before its even in the building.

We were all swapped over within 3 hours, so I could make chips first thing this morning! Now to find a whole pile of CA holders...:willy_nil

It's a nice machine man, but you know lathe operators never get ahead in this world... Every time you bring them something to do they turn it down!

Beautiful and love the DRO! How long is that Z scale??

I'm running a 15x80 of similar vintage, albeit only 1.5" spindle bore.

Did they make a collet closer for those bigger machines? I got uber lucky that mine came w the original collet closer.

edit: and ooh, wish I could do metric threads!

I'm sure they made a collet closer, but I don't have one. I'll keep my eyes peeled for one, rest assured.

Never used a servo shift model but I've ran Leblond machines before, definitely beefy and hold up to shop abuse fairly well. Nice lathe!

The Z scale goes the length of the bed, so I have 80" of available turning area.

I initially wired my ServoShift in reverse. Couldn't figure out why it wasn't shifting 'til I pulled the headstock cover and saw bubbles in the oil. Doh! Swapped a couple wires and she's all better. Never has gone into neutral though. I just use higher speeds for indicating as they provide little resistance by hand.

Looks like that's still an L-mount chuck. Did you get the original spanner?

Good machines! You'll enjoy it.

Ign: All later Leblonds will cut metric threads with the addition of a metric change gear set. They made several different sets depending on the size of the machine, but it's my recollection there are around 5 gears in total.

Leblond parts will provide the tooth counts for the gears if you provide a serial number and bend their ear a bit. The resulting chart is up to you though, unless you want to buy their $125 (IIRC) data plate.

I don't know about the spanner yet, the guy I bought it from has another Leblond with the L nose and he shared the one spanner he could find in his shop between the two. If he can't find the one that came with this machine I'll need to make one.

I'll probably end up making one.

Just did a little looking at was pleasantly surprised to see the 14" 4 jaw chuck is a Pratt Burnerd, made in Halifax, England. Just needs a little scrubbing with the old WD and she'll look fine again. Kinda heavy tho, around 120 pounds.

Nice lathe. Some of you guys with the space to house a large lathe make me green with envy. I am also envious of you who don't live in a machinery desert and have good used American iron around at your disposal.

Oh well, I will be happy with my little 13x40 Taiwanese lathe while I drool over your old American equipment.;)

Mike.
