Craftsman "Paintbrush" Ratchet Compatability Confirmation (USA 60T vs. Import 84T)

Picked up a pair of the newer Craftsman 84T "Paintbrush" ratchets. I wanted to see if the internals were compatible with the older USA made 60T versions. This would allow rebuilding or upgrading the older ratchets with the newer rebuild kits.

Happy to say they do swap, and work just fine. There is an additional spring point for the selector switch on the newer version, but everything else swaps into the 60T version without issue.

I didn't pick up a 1/2" drive version. However, based on the other two, I would venture a guess and say they are also compatible.

Thanks for sharing!! Just a guess but, I think the additional spring with pintle serves two purposes. One, it reduces auto reversing with additional tension on the direction switch. Two, it prevents the pintle behind the pawl gear from slipping out and locking up the ratchet which is a problem on the early craftsman 84 tooth premium ratchets but, that's another thread.
How much heavier and bulkier is the Taiwan made 84 tooth version over the older US made 60 tooth version?

They weigh nearly the same (at least in the hand), with the Taiwan 84T possibly weighing slightly more. All though the USA feels a bit more "solid". (Rather subjective, I know. But I don't have a small scale)

As for size I did a few quick measurements . . .

3/8" USA 60T
Head Width: 1.216"
Head Thickness: 0.468"
Handle Width: 0.803"
Handle Thickness: 0.594"

3/8" Taiwan 84T
Head Width: 1.267" (+0.051")
Head Thickness: 0.475" (+0.007")
Handle Width: 0.872" (+0.069")
Handle Thickness: 0.606" (+0.012")

1/4" USA 60T
Head Width: 0.891"
Head Thickness: 0.364"
Handle Width: 0.590"
Handle Thickness: 0.404"

1/4" Taiwan 84T
Head Width: 0.953" (+0.062")
Head Thickness: 0.350" (-0.014")
Handle Width: 0.627" (+0.037")
Handle Thickness: 0.462" (+0.058")

I wonder if the Taiwan one needs both those little springs..?
I lost that spring in one of my Gearwrench ratchets (84T I'm pretty sure). Maybe I'll buy one and see haha.

Thanks and please forgive the dumb question. Am really tired today. Maybe I mixed this up with something else. Could have sworn someone said China or Chinese somewhere.

No worries, people here often confuse Taiwan for the People's Republic of China and think that they're all the same. :dunno:
As I write this, I believe all of the satin finished raised panel ratchets are made in China, Peoples Republic of and all of the full polished ratchets are made in Taiwan but that could change.

So where do the extra spring and pintle go when the ratchet is re-assembled?

They go into the extra hole in the head (shown on the right in the last photo for both the 3/8" and 1/4" picture sets). Pushes on the back of the selector switch.

I just posted this info last week too, in the thread about replacement parts for craftsman ratchets , I had an 80th anniversary 1/2" I swapped the internals on with a new Taiwan model. Yes mine was Taiwan as well. It worked great.
Curious after that I swapped them with a Gearwrench 120xp. Those worked perfect as well except the cover would not fit on good as the 120xp has 2mm taller mechanisms and no quick release. Still functioned perfectly but I had to hold the gear in while testing it. I'm just positive that Apex uses the same basic design across the board on the 60 and 84t models. The gear selector switch is identical.
Then I swapped the gear from a 84t gearwrench 1/4" and a Craftsman USA made thin profile. Also works except for the quick release is an obvious issue.
All of them benefitted from a dab of Super Lube. Makes them quieter.

BTW,
It looks like the new polished 75t guts might actually fit into the RP handles. I hope someone tries this. It looks like the RP ratchet could be getting fazed out. Lord knows they paid for the tooling already.

Just a follow up. I also swapped the 84T internals into my 1/4" USA made version. I have found that both the 1/2" and 1/4" will lock up sometimes. The 60 Tooth works perfect in both ratchets but the 84 T is locking up in the USA versions. Anybody else experience this?
