My wife and I bought an all original 1925 English Bungalow style home (at least that's what we we can best classify it as with the eyebrow roof in front) and I'll be building a new matching detached garage starting in early 2016.

Here are a few initial architectural drawings (did them myself). Structural drawings are in the works and I hope to submit to the City for permit in December for a February start. These are a "builders set" and I'll be elaborating greatly on the details during the actual build, which I expect to take about 5 months. I'll be adding significantly more outlets, lights, cabinetry, in ground car lift, etc.

I'm a 27 year old project manager for a custom home builder so I'll be doing quite a bit of the work myself.

I'm open to any suggestions for improvement along the way so pass along any comments! There won't be many updates early on as I'm a few months away from starting but figured I'd get this thread going while I have a few free minutes

Looks good to me. Is there no provision for 240 v receptacles? Were I in your situation, I would do at least one on each of the left, right and back walls. You may not have any equipment that needs it now, but you will be very happy that you did when that day comes.

I'll be adding at least 5 240v outlets for my compressor, welder, planer, jointer, table saw, etc. These are "builders set" plans just for initial permitting with the City. I'll also be adding more lighting, many more outlets, and in-wall compressed air lines/outlets.

For frame of reference, here are a few photos of the main house. Built in 1925 and seen little to no work since then. The garage will be a scaled down version of the main house front facade.

Here's a "before" shot:

The "during" shot (now):

The "after" shot coming soon... should be done with the brick path, paint & landscaping in the next few months, about the time I start the garage.

And a few interior main house before/after shots. Almost done with the main house for now, ready for the garage.

I like the detail work on the original door hardware. Very nice job. That bathroom is also awesome. Great trim work and the tile choice is timeless and classy.

Thanks guys - its been a fun process. Most of the trades were subcontracted out but there are always pieces to pick up myself. Being in the high end custom home building business myself, I have access to some great subs. House is in the SF bay area.

A little more progress on the main house this weekend - some paint and herringbone brick walkway. Brick is reclaimed sand cast brick from the Stanford campus.

I like it, the place has style and has stood the test of time and still looks architecturally classy. The planned garage will complement it nicely. When are you planning to start construction?

Like the layout very much. I'm guessing this is not your first shop. (maybe you said, I mostly look at the pictures). The big table saw island will be a joy to use. Gotta ask about the two 220 outlets by the sink, how will those be used?

Not my first shop but this will be the first one I'm doing with plans to stay in it awhile. One will be for an undercounter electric hot water heater and the other will be placed further to the side and used to power one of the many pieces of shop equipment. I'm contemplating whether I should do an in-ground 220v outlet for the table saw island. I probably will... but dont want to get locked into a specific table saw placement.

Maybe more than one in-floor outlet? I've always been a little afraid of moisture but if the site is dry(er than mine) you might really find that's the best for the saw station and the jointer as well.

Nice find! It looks like you found a wonderful old house with great bones! And the garage plans look like it'll compliment the house very nicely. Looking forward to seeing how the garage progresses!

Never seen a bungalow design with an arched portico like that. But the fireplace double window flanking it is certainly stickley / craftsman style.

really like the tile and countertop marble stone choices, too. Really blends the 'old house' with modern design.

Yup, it's definitely a unique style. It seems to fall into the "English Bungalow" category, but in reality, it's pretty much one of a kind.

Trying to make it timeless so it'll still look great in 25 years.

Made some progress on the house this weekend. Paint is 95% done on the front and landscaping is done as well.

Garage plans are being reviewed by the City now - hoping to have a permit sometime in the next few weeks with an anticipated start date of mid-late February (el nino dependent).

Thanks for posting and look forward to seeing more! It's always nice to see CA build threads. Living in the city doesn't give us much space so you need to get creative.

We had some great weather this weekend and the mud dried out a bit so I was able to dig most of the footings and the pit for the car lift. With any luck, my concrete contractor will start a week from today.
