So I finally got the cash together to put in a new garage. Here is what I have now... isn't she a beaut!

Here is the SketchUp of what I want:

I am likely going to use a Mueller bolt together kit. As of now I am going to get a contractor to do the concrete work and erect it. I may have them do the trim and stonework too, but I have a feeling they are going to be too pricey.

I am going to need some help folks. Any recommendations or advice is appreciated.

Dang Kelvin... The local fire company will be parking their rigs in your garage when you are done!

Beautiful cad work...

Thanks, but I have to give the credit to Google SketchUp -damn good software. Just watched a few videos and ignored the in-laws over Thanksgiving, and I had that. Of course I uploaded the cars and windows.

Currently, I am busy researching insulation. I want the shop to be air-conditioned (heated and cooled). I am leaning toward spray-on closed cell.

That looks awesome! I personally have had No luck whatsoever using Sketchup personally ...
I wonder if there's a difference using a mouse vs the built in touch-pad on my laptop, I've watched numerous videos on Youtube and can't get the shapes I actually make to move or anything. I'll try again using a mouse...

That seems like a hardware issue. I tried it a year ago and gave up, but I don't think I watched any tutorials then. As far as my model goes, it is just a hollow box, I didn't try to model purlins and rafters and such, but it gives the minister of finance and the minister of architecture something to look at. Here is one of the inside.

Inside.jpg

I downloaded a medium sized trailer, and man that sucker really eats up the room. I realized I needed a loft and a bigger lean-to (originally it was half as long).

It looks like a nice vision, hopefully it comes to fruitation. I'd guess the old garage is getting tore down to make room ?

You will be happy with Mueller, I went with the weld up. It was about the same price in the end. No cables running in the inside to have to work around. I really like your design.

Nighttrain,

I haven't quite made it through your entire garage build thread yet, but I am going to have to steal a few ideas for sure -very cool.

Hmm hadn't though much about the cables.

Thanks. The Minister of Design and Architecture and I think it will end up looking better than our house. Which leads to other projects...like re-skinning the house:shocking:

My wife approved a "2 car detached garage" build project in our back yard so she could get the attached garage back for parking use (after 10 years I think she's due a parking spot for putting up with me...)
It has somehow turned into a 1300+sq ft 3 car garage/barn, she's slightly concerned since our house is only 1440 sq ft...

Mine's more of a Minister of Finance & Appearance than design & architecture, I get to do as I like as long as it looks good & doesn't affect our monthly budget... So she's a keeper!!!

I like it, really sharp looking.

I'm not sure about the stairs though. They really take up a lot of space right there in the center of the building. Is that loft for storage or is it an office space? I don't see an overhead door on the lean-to, is that also storage? If it was me, I'd look for an alternate location for the stairs- one that puts them along a side wall where you can utilize the space below them as a compressor room or something. Having them land right next to the lift seems like it might be a bit tight for working on a vehicle, plus when walking from the front to the back, you'll be heading right into the back side of them.

This is meant to be constructive criticism, I really like the overall plan. Can't wait for build pics!

So the stairs would be on a hinge, sprung and counter-weighted so I can pull them down or raise them out of the way. The 'lean-to' is the shop, and the loft is just for storage.

As for the camper...I don't even have one...but I would like to get one. And if I had a camper I would want to keep it covered. Since I don't really have any space besides the garage to keep it other than paying for storage.

The main building is 36ft wide, and 47 ft deep, with a height of 16ft. The lean-to is 12 wide and will run 43ft.

I am having issues with Mueller right now, I can't get them to get a good design -they want 5k more for the porch on the lean-to, and the window under the eave "can't" be done.

Update:

I worked it out with Mueller. I got all my stuff moved out, and had the garage demo'd.

I have a few more things to move, including a water line and electric out to my well. That will happen this weekend, and on Monday they start the concrete work.

Finally starting to get real!

make sure you take plenty of pictures. When you think you have taken enough, snap one more. You'll never get the chance to take another picture of it in progress.

Thanks, I am pretty pumped. It is good to finally see work getting done. I got slowed up by other stuff, not permits.

Well, we have received a ****-ton of rain in central Texas, and of course other parts, so it has been a little slow with regard to concrete prep. We are scheduled to pour on the 13th. Here are a few pics of their work.

Looking forward to watching your project go vertical. Could you give us some pictures that show the building in relationship to your home and your lot? Do you think you will have it ready for next year's Lone Star Roundup garage tour?

LSRU Garage tour? I don't think I can rise to that level in such a short time. I do have some cool stuff planned for it, but I work slow (lazy).

This was the only picture I could find with the house kinda in it. This was after we got our driveway redone.

Okay here is how it looks now:

IMG_20160825_172750.jpg

I just added a faux (non-functional) rafter and a post.

IMG_20160828_130505.jpg

I am getting the carport lowered 2ft next week, and I need to run electrical, skin the walls, and put up lights.

Making a little progress on the garage this past weekend. I started putting in the service drop.

Elec_Service.jpg

The boy even helped me build a deck so the meter would be at a reasonable height.

Today the contractors welded up a temporary frame to the carport. Tomorrow they will move it away from the building and cut off the legs, weld feet on, and move it back.

This is how you "install" a grounding rod in Central Texas limestone:

Snapshot 1 (9-18-2016 11-33 AM).jpg

There is a video here. I could not figure out how to embed it. Does this feature not exist on Garage Journal?

The hard part is getting the damn thing out of the hole.

So it has been a while -time for a quick update.

I finished up most of the electrical and framing in the main bay, so I moved the trailer into the garage. There goes a bunch of space. As you can see, I have moved most of my **** into the garage.

IMG_20161127_163252.jpg

The shop area is full of my ****, but I have barely started on the framing and have done zero electrical.

IMG_20161127_163323.jpg

With the trailer on the inside, i could finally take a picture of the front with the lower carport.
