I found this crusty old Stanley Wood vise laid out on a farm wagon at a garage sale this past summer. It was pretty rusty, the clamp was rusted tight and the soft pads were pretty torn up. For .50 Cents I couldn't pass it up. :)

I got it all loosened up after I got it home but just got around to tearing it down to start a refurb.

The soft pads are similar to masonite. I will get some 1/4 masonite to make new ones. Or should I just make them out of aluminum?

Well, it's a light woodworking vise, so I would make the pads out of 1/4 or 1/2" plywood. Maybe 1/4" ply covered with leather.

Oh man... Talk about a brain fart! Yes, it IS a Stanley... Sorry guys. 1/4" plywood sounds like a plan! Thanks Pendragon! I have all kinds of that laying around too.

I have been picking away at getting this vise refurbished. I made new clamp pads out of 1/8th in. underlayment. I laid out four pieces using one of the original pads as a template. I cut them out on the bandsaw and laminated them together in pairs.

After the glue set up I drilled out all of the attachement and clearance holes and trimmed them to final shape.

They bolted up nicely and should do the job well.

I rolled out the sandblasting cabinet this morning and got both pieces cleaned up. They looked pretty good after getting all of the rust and old paint off them.

Do you see where it says Stanley and NOT Craftsman.. :)

The insides cleaned up nicely as well.

I got the main bodies of the vise painted bright red this afternoon. Should look real nice after I get the handle and clamp screw painted silver hammertone. I'll upload pics tomorrow.

Finished up the paint work on this vise last nite. Turned out pretty nice and it will be a welcome addition to my vise collection. :)

Installed the new pad on stationary side. The movable jaw was still drying so I'll get this wrapped up and assembled tomorrow.

Looks good. I probably would have stuck to polishing the handle and used a coat of paste wax on the bare metal. Post some final pics of it on your bench when your paint is cured!

Bare metal doesn't remain rust free for long after my hands touch it, waxed or not. The acids in my skin start metal rusting almost immediately.
I got the vise project wrapped up tonight and it works like a charm.

This will come in handy even for working on car stuff. Light clamping painted or polished stuff will be it's main purpose.

Nice job! In all my travels I have yet to find a nice corner vise like that so the search continues. :D

I have more questions than answers.
After seeing this post I had to go thru a box of stuff i bought this winter and guess what I found? Mine is like yours before you started. I love what you did with yours and now mine has to go to the to do pile. Thanks for showing one fixed up.
