Hello all! This is my thread for my new project. I'm a 40-something that works as an IT Specialist and have been a gear head for a very long time. I've wanted to have a dedicated shop for a while and finally have pulled the trigger on the project. I will be having a 30x30 metal garage built by R&B Metal Structures. It will have 12' walls, 2 10x10 doors and a single entry door on the side. Each solid wall will have a window. The site of the building is shown below (half basketball court). The purpose of the shop will be 3 or 4 fold:
1) Man Cave (TV, stereo, etc)
2) Motorcycle Wrenching
3) Vehicle Maintenance
4) Trying to start wood working

My father passed away in August and left me all of his wood working tools, so they will be finding their way into my shop, along with all of his music items (he had the largest music library I've ever seen an individual have, including reel to reels, LP's, CD's and Tapes with collections such as Glen Miller LP Portfolios, Mosaic CD Collections, etc etc). So a corner (maybe 10x10 or so) will be a sit down area with TV, Stereo, etc.

Right now, I'm planning everything out while waiting on the structure to go up (was told mid to end of January).

For lights, I'm looking at these 4ft LED Shop Lights from Home Depot. I'm thinking 3 rows of 4. I would love to have ceiling fans, but I'm not sure how that would work with the lights. I'm looking at mini-split A/C units, but that will all depend on the budget.

I will have work benches and all of my tool chests and such lined up on the left wall and far wall. Far right corner will be the man cave portion and the right garage door area will have the wood working tools. At least, that's the plan.

For flooring, I'm debating between mats from Sam's Club or RaceDeck. For the price of the mats, it's really tempting to just use those and nothing else.

I have a 100amp panel that I will install and have power coming from the 200amp in my current garage/house.

I'll keep the thread updated as things start to progress.

Below are pics of the area before I power cleaned it, the current bike of choice (former AMA Supersport Ducati 848) and a couple of my kids. :)

May you enjoy your building in good health.

My experience in Gator country is extremely limited but I noticed you made no mention of insulation or Air Conditioning.

Will your " kids" and the Gators protect you from marauding Seminoles?

Sorry, I missed the mention of the Mini Splits.

Hope the wood shop dust does not bother your enjoyment of your music collection.

Good questions:

1) the shop will be insulated tho I haven't decided on what type of interior wall to use yet and if I wanted to use it all the way around (or high high)

2) I will keep the wood dust to a minimum with vacuum and ventilation

3) most years the Gators will keep the Semi's away;)

Welcome follow Floridian. Let's see, football check. Basketball check. Yep I'll stay a Seminole. :rocker:

As others have stated, I would have a dedicated room music/man cave. My last shop was 24x32 w/ a 12x17 clean room/man cave along back wall. Current shop has a 8x20 clean room. For A/C put in clean room and open door to shop as needed. One recommendation is to have a minimum open area of 20x20 for vehicle and moto work. That would leave you with 10x10 clean room and two 10x20 areas for woodworking, tools and storage. One other recommendation, when our sun, go with a light color roof. A friend has two carports, one silver roof, one green. It's a sauna under the green roof.

Also, check out the GJ Florida Chapter. We're doing a meet up at gatornationals this March.

Only sport that really matters to me is baseball, and we both know how that went for y'all last year versus us ;)

If I do a dedicated man cave, I'm guessing I would just put up some walls but I'm not sure how I would do that with a sloping roof/ceiling. Hmm...and good point on the color of the roof! But too late :( They've already started manufacturing mine. It's a dark grey color. Damn.

March 17-20 is Gator Nationals. I should be in town for that, so maybe I can have everyone over one night in the new garage. Hmm...I'll check the GJ Florida Chapter! Thanks for the heads up!

Ask to have this moved, garage builds belong in the garage gallery. Sounds like you are going to have a nice shop and nothing beats riding motorcycles.

Yeah, baseball. Got me there.

Wish I could make that show. You should post that at the Florida Chapter thread. Hope we can meet at the Gators.

Oh, there will be two 10x10 garage doors and then a side door on the side by the ladder in the last photo. I will also have three Windows...any recommendations where those windows should go?

This shop going to be insulated? You finishing the inside?

It will be. I will be slowly putting the interior together. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Reflectix insulation, some dry wall, some slat-board and then we'll see.

These poor guys are working right now and it's a DOWNPOUR outside.

You have to be excited. This has got to be the best way to build a small garage. For the windows think cross ventilation so at least one on left wall and one in back (or on side near back). I would limit windows on the west side to due to afternoon heat unless there is some shade. A window above a workbench is not a bad idea either.

Good to hear they're git it done in the rain.

My workbenches will be against the east wall, so I think I'm going to put two windows on that side and one on the west side (though I agree with you about the heat) but that west side also gives me a view of my back porch of the house, in case I need to keep an eye on the four legged creatures.

I'm beyond excited. Been planning on this for awhile. It'll be a slower build then what I want (always want it done now!) but that's ok. It'll keep me from rushing into stupid decision.

One thing that will be a challenge is wall board size. This garage was built with 5ft spacing between studs and I'm pretty sure the wall board standard is 4 feet.

Looking good. Hope that the build continues to move quickly.

One option you may look at doing, especially since you have 12' walls, is a mezzanine of some kind for your "listening area". I really like what Ray916MN did with the pallet racks for his workbench and second story. Check out his build thread 24'x48' Pole Barn Workshop There are other pallet rack mezzanines on GJ as well.

I am planning to do something similar with the pallet racks. Would be the only way to get some seating in my plans. I realize that in Florida that might be even hotter, but maybe you could enclose it and a/c just that part.

Does pointing at the ground make you go faster?
ROFL, I think he was looking in his tool belt :)

Actually I meant this guy:

Just messing with you. :)
I'm from Gainesville and used similar things back in the day (minus the pointing):

They finished the garage, despite the fact that it rained heavily all day yesterday. I've got more pics of the construction that I'm attaching. I will be working on it after work today and all weekend :) Pics will be taken as I seal the frame to the concrete and place the flooring in.

I had already placed a sealant around the floor frame on the exterior, so when it started raining on the second day of the build and there was no roof, we had quite the collection of water going...and earth worms, lol.

And some more...just a note: I requested the garage doors be set to the stage right because I will have wood working tools to the left (as a person stands in the garage and faces out) and I wanted to be able to pull vehicles in without having to move those wood working tools each time. I went ahead and had the windows installed in the middle of each wall, hoping to help with a cross wind.

And that last one is for you, Sublimate...my current track bike: 2009 Ducati 848 former AMA Supersport ridden by the Bobby Fong/Michael Beck team :)

Ok, more pics tonight as I clean the concrete and apply a second bead of seal and then tomorrow when I lay the floor in and start moving stuff :)

On the Sheetrock install it horizontally. Check with local suppliers for 4x10'. I used 4x12 in my shop (leftovers from house build). It's a bear putting up by yourself but it's less waste.

Excellent! Didn't realize they made it in those sizes...I will check that out. Thanks!

Looking good. Now wish I had gone with the 10' doors on my build. Great thing about these shops is that you can modify then really if you want to change anything. If the higher doors become a necessity, I can just unscrew the header, move it up, cut the sheet metal, and install new door.

Looking really good. I know you're excited. Seeing that tan exterior, I'm thinking a nice garnet stripe would make the garage perfect.

For the west window, you can build or buy a window awning.

Ok, ran the electrical wiring and hung the boxes. Next will be the PITA part of hooking the wiring up to each outlet (PITA because I'm using quad outlets, so that 6" jumper is a pain) and hooking everything up to the relay box. No power to the garage yet, so this is all just getting everything ready.

I think I've been talked into using spray on insulation. So I'm getting quotes for that right now.

In the pics, you'll also see the Air Hose kit that Lowes now sells. I'm thinking about using that instead of ordering from Rapid Air. Also, not sure why I didn't know this, but using the plastic connectors instead of the metal ones sure sped up the electric box portion of the install. I still used the clamps on the relay box. The ladder is going up to the top where I am going to install the shop lights. I put two outlets up there for two rows of LED's that I will have.

Also, I'm going to put the air compressor on the outside, back corner. I'm thinking about using the setup in this link, along with a mounting block. Any thoughts?

Ok, been debating about insulation options here. Spray on is going to run over $2k easy. I could go with the Reflectix. At around $130 per 4'x100' roll, I can get 3 rolls and do the 3 main walls and the front wall. Then also buy more for the ceiling. Then put some walls up...Hmm....

Are you going to have this inspected? I was under impression that romex alone wouldn't work. That's why I'm running conduit. But I'm jealous, because it took me about 12 hours to run lights, conduit, and wiring.
As a side note, if you do go spray insulation, you will want conduit. We have a building at work that was sprayed. It is impossible to cut that off, if you needed to replace wire sometime.
Also, make sure you tape anything you want exposed after insulation.

No comment on the inspection. Let's just say benefits of living out in the boonies. Got an estimate on a spray insulation today. Well north of $5k. Not happening. Back to the drawing board.
