Deciphering Snap On Wrench Part Numbers

So I was thinking of building a set of used wrenches...might be cool to do over time. Anyway, I want to make sure I'm getting the right ones so they somewhat match.

Can someone help decipher things? I'll start with some of the current stock numbers.

For this exercise, I'm just looking for metric combo wrenches, standard and long lengths.

Metric, Long length, Flank Drive, 12pt:
OEXLMxxB where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Standard length, Flank Drive Plus, 12pt:
SOEXMxx where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Standard length, Flank Drive, 12pt:
OEXMxx0B where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Standard length, Flank Drive, 6pt:
OSHMxx0B where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Short length, Flank Drive Plus, 12pt:
SOEXMxx0 where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Short length, Flank Drive, 12pt:
OEXMxxB where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Midget length, Flank Drive, 12pt:
OXIMxxB where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Midget length, Flank Drive, 6pt:
OXIMxxSB where ** is the size in MM



So what are the old codes? Are they any different?

OEXMxx are the short combo wrenches (not stubby). They seem to be fairly common. I recently pieced together a set of Metric short + standard length wrenches from various sources. I found that alot of Ebay sellers will get the lengths mixed up, but as long as you can confirm the part number and cross check for yourself, you should be OK.

What I mean is that I bought several wrenches on Ebay that were listed as "standard" or "long" when they were in fact the short pattern.


You'll also see some SO wrenches with an "A" suffix as opposed to a "B", I think these are just the pre-flank drive (I'm sure someone will correct me if this is wrong).

Shoot... I really don't need the competition on Ebay.. I have been collecting metric SO combo wrenches there for over a month now. ;)

Might as well add the Midgets too...

Metric, Midget, Flank Drive, 6pt:
OXIMxxSB where ** is the size in MM

Metric, Midget, Flank Drive, 12pt:
OXIMxxB where ** is the size in MM


Another interesting note... The current Standard length Flank Drive (OEXMxx0B) and the prior version (OEXMxx0A) seem to be the same overall lengths, but they are not if you go back one more version (OEXMxx). I compared a OEXM140B to a OEXM14 in my drawer, and the OEXM14 is about 10mm shorter in length (but still much longer than the current "short" 14 (OEXM14B)).

Would you really mistake a Midget for a Standard or a Long?

Good info. That's the kind of stuff I'd like to know. I wonder if there is a formula so to speak? ie, these models are **% longer than the older models. Would need several in the set to formulate that though....

No, but I figured that we had all the other current SO combos listed, so it might as well be on the list.

I am currently working on a collection of the series B standard flank (OEXMxx0B) metric, but I have picked up a few shorts and longs along the way in package deals. If anyone is working on a collection of shorts or longs, I might be up for a trade. ;)

Ok, you convinced me....I added them.

Got to see what I have when I get home. I would like to start a long set...

OEXM140B - 219mm long with size marking on beam only.

OEXM140 - unknown length (will be in a 1980s catalog), but they are shorter in overall length. They are the pre-1990 standard length combination wrenches. The increased overall length started with the 'A' suffix and are the same length as the 'B' suffix.

The long pattern wrenches without the 'A' or 'B' suffix are shorter overall as well.

I have come across some short metric combos with the naming GOEXMx (where x is the size in MM). SO is currently using this numbering for Industrial Finish metric shorts, but the ones I saw are chrome. Anyone know more about these?
