This item was just listed on Ebay, and I cannot help but wonder whether or not I need one in my tool box. ;)

It's a 10120 Thorsen, but I cannot find it either in the 1930 or 1975 Thorsen catalogs I downloaded from ToolArchives.com. I found a #10121, but not this part number.

So the question for the day is: does anybody have a clue what this thing is for?

Specifically, it's for knocking 2 piece Ford flathead valve guides out. The stems are flared, and the guides have to be knocked out the bottom to get the valve out.

Hello again.
re; Thorsen model 10120 item # 281930921343

I posted this on GarageJournal.com and asked the members if anybody had a clue what this is.
I looked through both the 1930 and 1975 Thorsen catalogs and can not find this item in either.
However: the 1930 catalog (page 14) does show a model #10138, which appears VERY similar to your #10120, and it is labeled as a "Valve Stem Bushing Punch" for early Ford. (retail price in their catalog is $1.00)
Looks exactly like yours, but a different part number.
I believe it is a REASONABLE ASSUMPTION to believe that yours is indeed a "Valve Stem Bushing Punch" for some early Ford Motor Co. engine; perhaps that one item every Model T (or Model A) collector should have in his toolbox.
(If you put some black paint on it it will even match the OEM Ford tools!)

Yes, Ford V8 guide knockerdowner. It isn't in the '30 catalog because the Ford V8 was still lurking in the future. Model A used basically similar guides and tool, dimensionally different from V8. You should be able to find it in mid-30's though 1950's catalog.
