So after lurking a bit, then joining up as a member and then posting an introduction, I guess this is next on my list. The start of reclaiming my garage.
We have lived in our house for 10 years now and I have really not done anything to the 3 car garage since we moved in besides putting up a quickie work bench and a few cabinets the first few weeks we were in. When we moved in it had 2 banks of typical wall cabinets that were put in when the house was new (25 years ago). These were great initially as it gave us a place to put things and allowed 3 cars to park inside. After 10 years and too many garage sales to count(my wife loves having garage sales for some reason) I realized that the cabinets are actually enabling me to store a bunch of stuff I don’t really need(ie. garage sale stuff). So late last year I started my plan to take back my garage. My plan:
1) Turn off the storing of stuff
2) Have 1 last garage sale
3) Go through the remaining stuff and give it away or trash it
4) Remove the wall cabinets
5) Sell the old workbench and cabinets
6) Store the real “garage” stuff in my shed for the time being
7) Make necessary drywall repairs in the garage
8) Paint the garage
9) Replace all the outlets/switches and cover plates
10) Order some metal cabinets and install a small hand sink as well
11) Lay down some flooring (RaceDeck, Swisstrax, etc)
12) Add some more lighting
13) Replace 2 panels on the single car garage door
14) Insulate the garage door
15) Think about cooling the space with a water cooler for early & late summer time
The vision I have and style will borrow heavily from dubber and 55cadillacking. Love the look they have achieved so hopefully I can be successful in my execution.
I am currently at #6/7. This week had me working on some drywall repairs. Mostly just holes and cleaning up bumps and bruises from the years of use but I did finally remove an old intercom speaker from the garage I have been wanting to get to and patched a couple other areas that had some water damaged drywall.
Some pics of where I started and latest progress. I have already demo'd 1 bank of cabinets in this 1st pic.
My wife says I can do anything I want out here, but she has to have a trash can right here. So I am reserving some space for something a little more apporpriate.
Sold this already.
New temporary work space.
Already demo'd one of these that was beyond saving because of water damage, but I managed to sell this one to someone that could use it.
Time to go through some of this stuff now. No cabinets left to store it all in.
I do have a small shed just outside the garage that will receive some of of this stuff. But that will need some attention as well.
Started some of the drywall repairs preparing for paint.
Trying to decide on some colors as well.
And still deciding on what flooring to go with.
This is where I am headed. I'm trying to keep everything against the back wall and keep the side walls clear of cabinetry. 10 years of not being able to open car doors once inside was getting old.
This about brings me to where I am today. The majority of this project will hopefully be completed in the next month or so as my normal list of tasks is steadily growing. Springtime weather here in the SW makes for a very busy time.
