So after lurking a bit, then joining up as a member and then posting an introduction, I guess this is next on my list. The start of reclaiming my garage.

We have lived in our house for 10 years now and I have really not done anything to the 3 car garage since we moved in besides putting up a quickie work bench and a few cabinets the first few weeks we were in. When we moved in it had 2 banks of typical wall cabinets that were put in when the house was new (25 years ago). These were great initially as it gave us a place to put things and allowed 3 cars to park inside. After 10 years and too many garage sales to count(my wife loves having garage sales for some reason) I realized that the cabinets are actually enabling me to store a bunch of stuff I don’t really need(ie. garage sale stuff). So late last year I started my plan to take back my garage. My plan:

1) Turn off the storing of stuff
2) Have 1 last garage sale
3) Go through the remaining stuff and give it away or trash it
4) Remove the wall cabinets
5) Sell the old workbench and cabinets
6) Store the real “garage” stuff in my shed for the time being
7) Make necessary drywall repairs in the garage
8) Paint the garage
9) Replace all the outlets/switches and cover plates
10) Order some metal cabinets and install a small hand sink as well
11) Lay down some flooring (RaceDeck, Swisstrax, etc)
12) Add some more lighting
13) Replace 2 panels on the single car garage door
14) Insulate the garage door
15) Think about cooling the space with a water cooler for early & late summer time

The vision I have and style will borrow heavily from dubber and 55cadillacking. Love the look they have achieved so hopefully I can be successful in my execution.

I am currently at #6/7. This week had me working on some drywall repairs. Mostly just holes and cleaning up bumps and bruises from the years of use but I did finally remove an old intercom speaker from the garage I have been wanting to get to and patched a couple other areas that had some water damaged drywall.

Some pics of where I started and latest progress. I have already demo'd 1 bank of cabinets in this 1st pic.

My wife says I can do anything I want out here, but she has to have a trash can right here. So I am reserving some space for something a little more apporpriate.

Sold this already.

New temporary work space.

Already demo'd one of these that was beyond saving because of water damage, but I managed to sell this one to someone that could use it.

IMG_2234.jpg

Time to go through some of this stuff now. No cabinets left to store it all in.

IMG_2382.jpg

I do have a small shed just outside the garage that will receive some of of this stuff. But that will need some attention as well.

Started some of the drywall repairs preparing for paint.

Trying to decide on some colors as well.

IMG_2375.jpg

And still deciding on what flooring to go with.

IMG_2364.jpg

This is where I am headed. I'm trying to keep everything against the back wall and keep the side walls clear of cabinetry. 10 years of not being able to open car doors once inside was getting old.

This about brings me to where I am today. The majority of this project will hopefully be completed in the next month or so as my normal list of tasks is steadily growing. Springtime weather here in the SW makes for a very busy time.

Welcome from AZ. Sounds like you have a good plan. I just painted the ceiling in mine took 7 gallons for 2 coats no fun but looks nice when done.

Hmm, My wife dumps bags of trash right next to the door as well. After complaining/nagging her for long enough I have got her to leave them just out side the front door. I put effort into keeping my garage the cleanest room in the house it's not a trash bin!

I suggest insulating the garage doors especially if they don't face north. You can use cheap 1.5" rigid foam at homedepot. I have found the roll around evap cooler to work OK in the e/l summer as long as it is blowing directly on you. Trying to cool the whole space, good luck.

Let see a pic of the 63 VW

Hey rattle_snake
Looks like you are not to far away from me in Mesa.

Yea, I can see I'm going to have to change the habits regarding the garage once I'm done. It's not going to be the dumping ground for everything anymore.

Definitely planning on insulating the door by summer. Should be interesting to see how well it helps out. I checked out your pics and noticed your door was insulated. Did the garage door come that way or did you do it? Looks like it's got a silver lining on it. Looks clean!

Here is my black 63 and the 57 I'm working on. Can't wait to see them parked in here when it's all done.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

I am looking forward to seeing your space once you get some paint on the walls. It is amazing how much that can change the feel of the garage. What cabinets are you going with? In the drawings they look like NewAge cabinets. I think a tile flooring will look good in there too. Are you just planning on doing the lower level, or will you do the step as well?

Correct on the cabinets. I am going with the NewAge Performance Series for a couple of reasons. 1 being that I am working with a specific set of dimensions I am trying to fit my "work" area into and also keep everything against the back wall. The backwall in the 3rd car area has a 3" step to it that is only 22" deep so I can't get into a typical 24" cabinet. This is actually fine as it does keep the cost down some and still meets my needs.

You should start seeing some progress pics with paint on the walls over this next week. Still haven't totally decided on an exact color combo yet, but I still have a couple days.

As far as the flooring, I'm ordering that today so I will probably have that next week, well before I need it.

Hopefully you can gleam some info from my progress. I know I've done the same with many other GJ members.

Hey James- it's free shipping on the NewAge products in the continental US from whoever you get them from. I'm assuming they just drop ship from the NewAge warehouse.

Skateboards... Yea, I got a few and a couple are my son-in-laws. That longboard is mine though and it gets used on our many trips to Cali. Getting out the AZ heat in the summer is my favorite hobby.

I've never been to Sierra Vista. Hopefully it's a little cooler than where I am. :)

It's hard to tell but there are 2 coats of flat white on the entire ceiling. I decided to go with flat because of the age of the ceiling and all the repairs it's been through. I thought flat would make them disappear better than a gloss. Glad the ceiling is done. Now I can start on the walls. Still have to decide on an exact color combo.

Trimmed out the attic ladder as well. Been wanting to do that for years.

Your garage is starting to look great! Love those VWs too, always wanted one!

I recently started the same project as you (I'm in Chandler). Got rid of the older wooden cabinets, and that created so much more room (you know these 3 car garages are fairly small). Now I can fit 3 cars!

I got the Gladiator cabinets from Sears during Thanksgiving sale ($99), and hung on Gladiator tracks. Really love them, they are quite sturdy, and fit a lot, and look good. Using Gladiator tracks to hang everything else; bikes, and random landscaping tools.

Still need to paint and do some flooring.

Keep up the good work! Makes me want to paint mine ASAP after seeing those painted ceiling pics!

NewAge has a great sale on right now. Ends Feb 29 though. I've been following them a while and this is the best pricing I've seen outside of Black Friday. I ordered mine.

I'm also trying to decide between Swisstrax and Racedeck.

Yea, definitely plan on placing my order today and take advantage of those sale prices. Been looking around and that is the best price I could find on what I need. Placed my Swisstrax order on Friday. Took me a while to decide too. Either way, you will get a good product.

Looks like good progress so far, did you decide on a color?

Well, I have the light grey picked out for the upper portion, but it's the darker color I'm still tossing around. I know it's been done many times, but I think it's such a classy look. I have really loved what others have done with it. I'll have to decide this week as I hope to be painting the lower section next weekend.

Quit for the weekend. Gonna let it dry a couple days before I get the stripe on. I can't wait to cover that ugly floor this week!

I wasn't quite sold on your color until I saw it with the dark gray. It will look great with the stripe and other darker accents. The floor should really help tie it all together too. Do you plan on painting the trim a contrast color, or leave it the color of the walls? I think it would look sharp if it was white to match your doors. Or maybe the same color as your stripe?

Yea. I was unsure about the light grey myself after it went on. Still not 100% on it. It's a little more on the "blue" side of grey than I was thinking. Love the darker grey though. I decided to wait till I get the flooring and cabinets in before making a final decision on the color. I have no problems changing the color if i can't live with it. I haven't decided on the trim yet. I just put some color on it to give it a fresh coat. I'm going to repaint the doors white so I may do the trim at the same time.

Looks good!

Thing that really bugs me about garages here in AZ is that most of them are only 19' to 19'6" deep. Frustrating. Luckily I found a house with an extended garage. 23' deep. But alas only a two car. I'll take it though.

Agreed. Mine is only 20' for half of the garage and 22'9 for the other half. A few more feet would be ideal. My suburban barely fits in the shorter section.

Thanks for the shout-out! This pic is stellar! Looking forward to seeing your space develop. Good luck sir!

Your welcome. I read through your 2 threads and it definitely helped me visualize things. And I appreciate your affinity for German engineering.

Got the stripe on. Unfortunately I had a couple spots where the tape pulled the paint off. This was on couple areas where I had done some drywall repairs and probably missed it with the primer. Other than that real happy with the outcome. I'll have to go back and fix those areas this weekend.

So I just had to throw a few down tonight to get a look. It's starting to come together.

Unfortunately due to some other commitments the next couple days I'm going to have to put off the rest of this work till Saturday. Should be a big change to the garage after the weekend.

So this past weekend it was finally time to see everything come together. Let me first start with a couple reviews of the main products involved in this makeover.

Cabinetry:

New Age Products Performance – I searched the cabinet options quite extensively and never could come up with another set that could both meet my needs and not blow the budget, like the New Age Products Performance line did. I would have loved larger, heavier gauge cabinets, but in looking at the space I was working with and the budget, the Performance Line always came out on top. I ordered them during their February sale (I would only order them at the sale price) and was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. 3 pallets, nicely packaged and no damage. I spent an evening unpacking them and installing the handles and feet and they were ready to go. No missing parts, no bad nut plates and everything fit in my designated space just like I imagined. I also ended up with 2 73” cabinets and a 48” worktop extra than I was planning on because of the package I ended up ordering. More is always better. Overall, I got what I expected and love the look of this line.

Flooring:

Swisstrax – I received a number of samples from the different manufactures I was interested in and at the end of the day I ordered the Swisstrax(Jet black, Red and Pearl Grey). I know I would have gotten a quality product no matter which one I ordered, but I like the Swisstrax for the extra thickness and durability that the ¾” tile delivers. I also appreciated the fact that it was harder to see through to my old floor (which I absolutely hate). My experience buying the flooring through Swisstrax could not have gone any better. I got great customer service, some good advice and never felt pressured or oversold on purchasing. I know I paid a little more compared to the 12” tiles, but I know it wasn’t much based on my quotes and thought it was justified since I was getting more material per sq foot. Overall, I was very happy with the whole process.

Paint:

Behr Ultra Premium semi-gloss – I used French Silver(PPU18-5) for the upper color and Dark Pewter(PPU18-4) for the lower color and a black semi gloss for the stripe. Paint went on nicely and covered easily with 2 coats. My only complaint was the guy who did the drywall repair(me) didn’t hit all the repairs with the primer so when I was peeling the frog tape off, it pulled the paint in a few areas where there was no primer. This was so aggravating as it was my own fault due to the lack of proper prep. It’s only paint and it can be fixed, but I hate having to do my own rework.

Now on to installation day. At this point, I hope you love to look at pictures.

Started with clearing the garage and giving the floor a good cleaning and mop. These are before pics but the after ones don’t look a whole lot different. This is more for my own peace of mind.

And we are laying tiles. My daughter thought it was fun hammering away with the rubber mallet.

Got my father-in-law manning the table saw and me overseeing them both.

Measuring for the cuts we are about to start. That back step was surprisingly straight which made the last row go pretty quick. Cut, set in place and step on it. Could not be easier.

IMG_2527.jpg
[/IMG]
IMG_2531.jpg
[/IMG]

Main portion of the floor complete. Now finishing the cuts on the upper section.

IMG_2534_1.jpg
[/IMG]

This was one of the more interesting cuts. This support beam fell right in the middle of 1 tile. And I had no extra’s to work with so no room for any errors.

IMG_2535.jpg
[/IMG]

It came out pretty good though. I cut the little supporting ribs right at that narrow section. Can’t even see where it is split.

IMG_2548.jpg
[/IMG]

I did have to trim my water heater closet doors a little but these ¾” tiles came up and matched the thresholds perfectly.

IMG_4314.jpg
[/IMG]
IMG_4315.jpg
[/IMG]

And after a few hours I was moving in cabinets. I quit for the night right after that.

I spent the next day putting the upper cabinets up on the wall and started securing the work tops to the bases. I’m still playing around with the configuration of the 2 extra tall cabinets.

Last night I gave my car a badly needed bath and brought it in for some final pics with my dslr. I’ve had quite the reaction so far from my neighbors and also random people walking by. Most can’t believe how nice it looks and have never seen anything like it. One lady asked if I was doing this because I was putting it on the market soon. Not likely I said.

At this point I still have a lot to do. Fix the paint touch ups, replace all the outlets and plates(I’m thinking black or stainless?), hang up a few items on the wall, repaint the two doors and trim, put in the sink, add a workbench light and a vise. The main thing is to just make it functional again as I kind of have a mess on the side of the house. I can also see that this will probably be a work in progress for a long time.
