I'm looking to upgrade my current ratchet set currently I have a Craftsman usa set. I was wondering if anyone had any input on the Gearwrench 120xp set and whether or not I should get the cushion grip set vs the standard handle.

I have a few snap on and g.w. ratchets at work and keep a g.w.120xp at home.

Excellent ratchets at a very good price. My only "complaint" is that even though the ratchet is sealed, it's not a very good seal. I've dropped g.w. ratchets into anifreeze and gas only to find I have to disassemble and clean it the next day. Same goes for any ratchet I own including s.o. roto ratchets. However the s.o. sealed 80s arent prone to this abuse, so that's I only reason I still keep and reach for snap on over g.w. in some cases.

Honestly, just grab the 81230P set. Amazon has it for $115 which is still less than just one s.o. ratchet yet the gearwrench is about as good.

Also chrome vs grip handle? That's all you sir. I keep both kinds around. Personal preference.

I have the flex head set and love them, still have to get the regular set but they don't have the bigger flex head set with the cushion grip so I couldn't tell you which is better but I like mine.

I own the 84t and 120xp. Both have a good feel and work well. Very smooth ratchets. Never had any problems with either. As others have said, grip is a personal preference.

Grips are nice but 2 drawbacks I've found are clearance in tight spaces & cleaning. Like everyone else said it's preference but that's my .02

I have the flex long handle 1/4 and 3/8 set.

The comfort handle is pretty good and helpful when it is cold outside. And they are pretty easy to clean with some Simple Green.

When I got them the action seemed to be a little rough to me so I opened them up and put some Super Lube in them. With that they became smoother but I still wasn't completely happy. So recently I opened them up again and cleaned them with Brake cleaner. Then I put only a very small amount of Super Lube on the pawls and gear (couple of dabs) and then added a few drops of Marvel Mystery Oil. They seem to be better now, pretty smooth and, to me, the back drag is light.

Because of the 120 tooth action with the dual pawl design, it sounds like a zipper. The chrome is smooth but not as good as my Wright ratchet or even my Armstrong 88 locking flex.

With the long handles you can get pretty good leverage with both the 1/4 and 3/8.

Both the 1/4 and 3/8 are very good ratchets. But I prefer the locking action on the Armstrong 88 flex over the 3/8. I find that I am starting to use the 1/4 more often as a go-to ratchet over my other 1/4's. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 120xp ratchets. They are good solid design for a very good price. A lot of people say that they don't see the need of more than an 80 tooth gear/action in a ratchet. But even if it is only once that those extra teeth are needed for access, it makes it worth it to have them. And you really don't pay any more for the extra teeth and smaller swing arc. You should get years of use out of them if you decide to get them.

I have the full set of the chrome handled versions. They are great finetooth ratchets but I still prefer the feel of the dual80 snap on

I have a few. They're nice. The 120xp flexhead heads are a little larger than their 84 tooth counterparts but, the also have a chamfered edge around the top of the head. I like the comfort grip handles myself because, it's a narrow handle that's not much thicker than the all steel version, and the comfort grip ratchets are longer than the all steel versions. Shop around for the best price because there is a wide price spread on Gearwrench.

Very nice, I love my 1/4 drive. I have an 84 tooth just in case I need a thinner head, but that rarely happens. Great ratchet.

I own both 84 and 120xp in 1/4 drive. 120 id a flex head long comfort handle. I love the 120 xp, low drag is key. The 84 tooth has way more drag even when lubed up. I hardly use my 84 tooth.

I have them in 1/4 and 3/8, both work well for me. All things being equal most times I will grab the comfort handle first.

The only soft grip ratchets I own are from HF. I don't do enough to really need comfort grips. Or at least not enough to pay extra for it. Comfort grips are still just as cold in the winter anyway.

I own the fixed and flex head 120xp rats and they are nice. I generally reach for others beforehand, but when I need them they are reliable.

I have a couple I really like. They seem to really shine in tight areas. I hope they hold up. The 3/8" stubby flex is very handy at times.

The 120XP ratchets like a light oil. Grease will make them skip and or lock up. Other than that they are decent ratchets. I purchased mine when they first came out and found out about the light oil very quickly.

I guess I'll be the first to say I don't love the 120xp's. I like gearwrench in general, their quality and cost are right in my comfort zone but I like the 84 tooth ratchets better. Hard to describe until you actually try one out but there's really no sound or feel on the ratcheting action like all other ratchets I'm used to. Just personal preference but they're not for me, seems there's an upper limit on how many teeth are necessary. I also prefer the chrome handles for easier cleaning, pretty much everything gets a blast of brake cleaner, a rag and tossed back in the drawer so comfort handles don't work for me.

I have the 4 piece flex set. Overall I like them. I like the two 3/8 and 1/4 the best. The 1/2 is pretty thick. I still prefer my SK ratchets but that's just my preference. The GW ratchets have just a little play in the flex. When it comes to a long 1/2 I choose my Carlyle 12LQR. It's non flex and smaller head. I have a picture of them side by side.

I know this thread is from last year, but in case anyone is searching for info, I must say I’ve been pleased as hell with my GearWrench 120XP 3/8 (with the regular chrome handle). I have a Snap On Dual 80, and yet I still reach for the GW more frequently. It helps that it is a little longer than the Snappy, so you get a bit more leverage, and it has a slightly smaller head profile to get in tight spaces. The Snap On is definitely a superior build, but the GW just feels right for me. I use it every day as a diesel tech. For $30 you just can’t beat it. Very fine toothed and extremely low drag. I have managed to break one, but that was while using it on the back end of a sticky nut/bolt that I was going at hard with my 3/8 impact (which I’ve done many times). Took it back to the place I bought it and they handed me a new one.
