Is the Black & Decker complete guide to wiring a good reference book?
The 6th edition is supposed to be up to the latest codes.

It's a bit spendy but the NEC handbook (with all of the pictures/explanations) is THE book to have. If the price bothers you just think about the cost of doing it the wrong way...

A slight bonus is that if your AHJ is on an older code cycle the price drops a good bit.

A shop building. I have journeyman help available in the family but I want
to get an idea of materials, design, and common practices.

Ive never learned anything from those books myself, they do make good comic relief from time to time though.:spit:
How big is the building what kinds of stuff will you be doing out of it?;)

it's not bad for a total noob. you can get a decent idea of what is happening.

Problem being some of the stuff in those books is so outdated,A good electrician could teach you more usable stuff in about 15 mins of walking you through the garage with a sharpie marking box locations and just telling you things.;)

The building will be a double size garage shop building. About 24 X 24. A general purpose shop.
Mostly used for woodworking with the usual power tools and machinery.
For outlets I'm thinking about 20 amp circuits and 15 amps for lighting.
For 220 volt I have a Powermig 200 welder, a 7.5 HP 80 Gal. compressor, and will have a 3 HP cabinet saw,
Of course then there will be the HVAC.
My niece and her husband are electricians and they do mostly commercial work.
They don't mind driving down to help because I pay them scale.
I don't believe that even family should work for free.
That way I get a good job done and they don't avoid me. I still would like a good general reference book though.

I have that book. The color wiring diagrams, photo's and explanations are very good. I have used it to understand 3-way switches and for installing ceiling fans with lights. Also understanding how GFCI wiring is done was helpful.

It is a good book for those starting out with home electrical work. I would recommend it.
