BEST shop apron

Now I understand there are all sorts of different aprons for different uses. I'm a gunsmith, so my needs are very similar to that of a machinist. I don't want 50 pockets, or any flash & dash; I want an apron.

To me an apron should first and foremost keep **** off your clothes.
A real shop apron should go as high up as possible, and as wide as possible. It should go up under the arms as high as possible. The only pockets needed should be the one up high on the chest hold a dial caliper, awl/scribe, pen/pencil; just the basics. I could live with some lower pockets, I could live with no pockets at all. But I want an apron that actually covers my clothing and keeps me clean.

So does anyone know where I can find such a thing?

I use to wear one to keep cnc coolant off. I don't like the ones that hang on my neck so I took cheap denim one and pop riveted new straps that criss crossed my back and clipped at the side. Was much more comfortable.

Another  vote for the Duluth Trading apron. It's their heavy duty fire hose material with wide X straps and large pockets - No complaints!

I have a Glock apron also (one of the above Brownell's links). Compared to the Duluth Trading apron, the Glock apron is more appropriate for baking cookies.:lol_hitti

I got the Duluth Trading but didn't like the cross suspenders and the clips were a pain for me.
It got turned into a neck strap with a strip of Velcro for adjustment. I made a waist strap with a side buckle that seems easier at least for me.

I have a Mechanix Wear shop apron. Made by the same guys that make Mechanix gloves. It's pretty good, no complaints, has the snap clip quick connectors. Fits me .... so the straps are really long!

Welcome to Garage Journal and thank you for the hot tip! As an owner of a Duluth Trading "Best Damn Work Apron", I ordered a Texas Canvas Wares Deluxe Apron. It certainly looks to me like a better than Best Damn Work Apron!

One post and you've already tempted another GJ member into a purchase I didn't know I needed!:lol_hitti

I like aprons with shoulder straps a lot better then the ones that hang from from your neck. Last couple I bought were from Seven mile creek. Been happy with them. I do like the look of the Duluth.

I like to put my phone or micrometer in the under chin pocket, if sewn onto the apron and I bend over it falls out. Don't care to have them zipped or flap covered in a pocket, so they can be quickly gotten. I use the Amazon-KNG Adult Shop Apron, Black. They hold up well and launder easily when messy.

Hmmmm......

My dad always wore a shop apron very similar to the style shown in Stevenn1's pic above ... only without the flowers! Mom would buy blue denim by the yard at a dry goods store and sew up simple, hemmed aprons. Only addition was a small chest pocket in the front for holding pencils, a small scale, etc. Occasionally, she would add some small embellishment like a red hem at the top of the pocket. He had several aprons that he would rotate home to launder from time to time.

Haven't thought about Dad's shop aprons in years!!
