Just dug a trench for the beginnings of my 25x30 "garage/shop" going up in my backyard!! SO excited!:willy_nil:lol:

I'll add photos and updates as things progress. We might get some bad weather over the next few days, but GC projects 3 weeks to completion.

Wish me luck and I'll see you around here!

Got all the footer trenches dug and received two loads of base material for the concrete pour. Hope to get concrete delivered early next week.

Here are some pics.

More to come as the build progresses.

Thanks for any inputs or suggestions!!

The original plan for the building was for it to measure 25'x30', have 14' eaves, and a 20' roof peak. I plan on adding a partial loft later on. It was going to have two man doors, two 3'x3' windows and a 12'x10' roll-up door. I was going to extend my fence to the building at the corners so the roll-up door and man door would be exposed to the alley behind our house. This would leave one man door in the back yard and another one to exit into the alley instead of opening the roll-up door every time I wanted to go out to the trash cans/driveway/shed/etc. There will be a two-post lift and an I-beam rolling hoist on the 30' I-beam going down the peak of the ceiling.

Very excited to have it finally happening!!  :rocker:

This video is of the skeleton of the building in the original design:

Design change #1: Decided on after we uncovered tree roots where we started digging the original trenches for the foundation footers. Because of this we had to move the building deeper into the yard, so this put the far left man door too far from the back door of the house and would probably never be used, resulting in a waste of money. We figured we'd move the far left door to the same end of the building as the man/roll-up doors.

This video shows the building with panels mounted after the first design change that moved the man door position:

Since the building was now sitting 10' deeper in the yard, the fence idea was scrapped placing all the doors inside the back yard, not separated by a fence line. So design change #2: Eliminate the redundant man door next to the roll-up door, of course... duh!

Design change #3: Because we saved money by eliminating the unnecessary man door we thought we should enlarge the roll-up door from 12'x10' to 16'x12' so it would be easier to park two vehicles in the building.

I have added features to the design after reading posts on here like dropping the slab at the roll-up door opening by an inch or so to give the roll-up door a pocket to sit in, thanks to the OP for that idea!! :rocker:

We haven't made a new video with the second and third design changes due to the fact that we made those after work had already began.

I'll continue to post updates to this page as the building progresses.

Thanks for your interest, if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or questions don't hesitate to reply.

Well, it's been awhile since my last post, been busy watching concrete dry... lol

Anyway, we got the footer trenches dug, rebar placed and 17yds of concrete poured last Friday. My wife came back from a jog and asked if she could help, so we taught her how to screed and she didn't do too bad of a job. She was happy she had a hand in building my shop but was upset that she got dirty... :D

The 16x12' roll-up door arrived and the building should be here next week. Soon we'll start placing the i-beam posts and trusses!! Woo hoo!

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. The slab looks rough on the edge, but that's okay, it smoothed out later in the evening. Also, this is where the roll-up door will rest and there is a 1x1 under that layer for the drop down the door will sit in when closed. (Thanks for the idea GJers!!)

Also, we found this little guy in one of the trenches, so we caught him, took him to a field nearby and released him back into the wild. The wife wasn't involved in that part for some reason. :D
New neighbor, but had to move away:

Thanks for watching.

So, I've been calling this building a few different things, "The building", "The workshop", "The Shop", "The Garage", etc... I know, not original at all.

So, I'd like to come up with a name for it, hopefully I could get some ideas from you guys!

I live in SW Texas and our house is on 3/4 of an acre in the middle of an established neighborhood. Our house has a covered patio on the back that we've named "The outback", mainly because it's out-back see.

I've been thinking about taking that name for "The shop" since it's "out-back" also. Maybe another version of "The outback", like "The far outback"...?

What do you guys think? Thanks for any ideas!

"The far outback" sounds good.

Lol, yeah, I mentioned it to the wife today and she likes it too, she's a little worried about me being in "The Far Outback" too much.

The tarantula nest ? ;)

I don't think I'll be going with that one Spd, but thanks for the suggestion!

No floor drains???

No, it doesn't rain much here and I'll have a 25' gravel driveway in front of the building to wash cars, etc. I don't plan on getting much, if any, water inside.

Subscribed. Hoping to get my own 24 *24 underway soon. I will be following your build closely.

Thanks Road_runner, will be looking forward to seeing your build as well!

Any updates?

Updates?! Wow! Yes, it's been non-stop since last Friday!!

We got the building shipment from the local steel dealer:
I-beams, C-channel, C-purlin, Weld tabs, 2x 10'x1/4" Flat plates and the metal skin. :rocker:

All the posts are up and we hung the first truss tonight about 2hrs ago, it's been over 100 degree days here since last Friday and tomorrow is supposed to be in the high 90's again! :FIREdevil

Have three more trusses to fab up and hang via forklift, 20' is really high!! :eyecrazy:

I don't have the pictures posted yet, but I'll get them uploaded soon. Because I know, :needpics:

Good looking build so far keep the them coming...

Cheers Randy...

Thanks Randy, and Yukon for your interest in my build thread!
