I got a old Plymouth hood today and think I might rework it and install it as a door canopy over the walk-in door. Anyone else done this, I have seen a few on Google, some look good some not so good. Any thoughts on supports for the front ? maybe chain from above or welded chain supporting it from below, or 3/4 in. black iron pipe. Or the whole idea might be bad, or it might look great if done right !

How about this. It's over the door of a little VW salvage yard I like to go to.

That is the most oakified idea I have seen today.
At least use a cadillac hood so you can show you have some class

I have seen it done. Properly done it can look good. I haven't done any hood awnings, but I have made a few out of old boats. Hint: don't try to use old wooden boats, they are too heavy, had to support all four corners.

We backed it with wood trimmed to fit the hood contour, 5/4 pine I think, screwed the wall edge of the hood to the edge of the wood, mounted the wood, which, mounted the hood.

In essence
Build the hood a firewall, mount the firewall.

I like that idea, the wood would solve several problems.

That black Jaguar hood is mine. Had it left from the suspension donor car. Price was right and a few welds on some pipe for the supports it was ready. It works good and has the car theme. Although most of my work is older hot rods, it still fits the theme.
