Been reading a lot on here for the last few months, with plans to build. Well, that day has arrived! My family and I live on the gulf coast and have some property, so we have plenty of room. So I decided to build a 40x60x16 metal building, with a 20x60 lean to. Mainly for hobby stuff, and repairs. We are kinda low so we did a little dirt work.

60'x60' = 3,600 sq feet under the roof. Now, that is quite a play pen. It will be interesting to see what kind of toys you will be playing with out there.

Weather has stopped this build in its tracks. I did get 1,500lbs of insulation, the new power pole and all the outside LED's. The guys are supposed to be here Thursday, but there's a huge chance of rain.....again

So educate me on expansion joints? Why did they not put them in my slab? Will I need them?

Damn nice start to a build, As for expansion joints they can do them when they pour when the slabs are smaller or come back and cut then later check with your concrete guy. In Texas there are some pretty good temp swings I was stationed in Austin for 7 years so saw some myself. However, I am not a concrete expert I am sure others who know more will chime in on the hows and whys on the expansion joints.

Welcome to GJ! Nice build so far and good thinking on bringing in the fill! Did you have to put in some piles? Remove top soil before you filled? Packing the new fill?

I see your site inspector checking out one of the holes! Did he give you a pass??? :lol_hitti That's a great pic!

I'd love to build a building from scratch someday so I can plan everything rather than having to figure out how to work around someone else's workmanshit!

Looking forward to seeing how you finish out the inside! Is it for wrenching? woodworking? Toy storage? A little of everything?

Thanks for posting!
Cheers!

Don't sweat the expansion joints, if they used the correct concrete mix and the correct additives you most probably won't need them.
Our concrete roof is 120' long with no joints.

We didn't do "piles", we did beams. 24x12 outside and 12x12 cross beams. We took off about 4" of top soil. Packed it with a bulldozer and lots of rain. Thanks for the kind words!

That's one heck of a shop! I'm down on the gulf coast as well, I'm planning on a smaller version with 12' walls, lean to is a must have. Do you care to share who you purchased your building from.

Went to my local tractor supply today and found a pretty good deal. I saw this box and it was old, faded, dusty and open. So I took a look inside and everything was there. I grabbed one of the workers for a price check........$20!
