Does anyone know about this company? Seems they cater to government contracts which isn't a bad thing, but I haven't heard anything in the private sector. Are they any good?

You mean something like these:

Elroy procured these in 1980 or '81. They were old then. They are "non rotating" carbide tipped. If you have to measure a groove, there is nothing else like them. Elroy has used the **** out of these and they were through the mill a time or two before we got them.

Similar tools are available from other manufactures. They are NOT CHEAP!

I know that S-T Industries/ Scherr Tumico provides most of the precision measuring tools to Sears for the Craftsman brand. Some of these Craftsman precision tools are still made in USA but some are now sourced in China. If you have a question about any of the current Craftsman precision measuring tools, you can call S-T industries directly. The person I spoke to there was very nice.

I have no idea about their current products but the old ones are great. Like Elroy I have a second hand S-T mic that is superb. I bought this depth mic in 1987 off of a retiree who used them for years. I used them every day until 2002 and never had a problem with them.

MAD,

Do you know about when ST started making Craftsman tools? Do these tools have a series code on them?

A lot of everything is made in China now days; that said many of S-T products were made in Switzerland in years past. They made special stuff and contracted for many standard items. The quality is on par with B&S, Starrett Etc.
