I picked one of these up the other day and have used it quite a bit.

From my understanding they are designed for thinner materials but I decided to see how much abuse I could throw at it and see if it held up.

So far I have cut 2 8 inch cuts in 1/4 inch material plunging for a internal cut, 3/8 round, cut several welds, 1 in solid square and a bunch of thinner stuff.

So far so good, it has completed all the tasks I have set.

The good:
Does not wear down so you get the same depth of cut.
Less dust.
won't shatter sending shrapmill everywhere.

The only things that I have noticed as a down side are:

Cost
Seems to cut slower than an abrasive disk.

Has anyone else tried them? If so what are your thoughts.

Bought one recently myself, and while it does last longer than an abrasive disk, I wore one out on a cone cart project, If I had to guess I would have used 2 maybe 3 abrasive disks for the same project, not worth the cost imho, I'll be sticking to abrasive disks.

What material were you cutting?

I have to say I will be buying more of these, after a week of hard use it is still going strong, by my estimation I would have used 10+ of my better cut off wheels to do what this one has done.

Granted I have not used it on any hardened material, or stainless.

Cuts so far include a ton of mild steel both hot and cold rolled, alum, brass, copper. It does seem to cut a bit slower but the that as a trade off for not wearing down and being able to make use of the full depth of cut over and over is well worth it to me. Also because it does not wear down like a abrasive disk there is less dust to clean up.

The price is high but since I am not wasting time changing disks, cleaning up and the long use makes the price for me a wash.

it takes 10 seconds max to change a disc... cmon

I would buy one to see how it works, I hate the cutting disc smell and dust.

I wouldn't try stainless with that one, maybe they'll make one for stainless too.

Lowest price I could find on the 14" was $111 with free shipping on Amazon. But the range was $109 - 147.

I have an "extreme" on a 4 1/2 grinder. It was cute for a moment. Junk.
Gimme an 040 Metabo slicer any day.
As a matter of fact I just bought fifty 5 inchers and fifty 4.5"
My bigger saws are low rpm and carbide/ceremet. I use an abrasive 14 on rebar or questionable hardness pieces so I don't risk the life span on the carbide$

Adding to the list of things cut, the heads of 8 Ford truck bed mounting bolts, and then cutting 5 of the bolts again so they would drop through the holes in the frame.

I bougt one yesterday for my 4-1/2 " grinder. So far I have cut 1" and 1-1/4" .120 wall mild steel square tubing. The consistent cut depth and size makes it very easy to repeat cut motions for some cuts. So far I would have used 4 abrasive disk for the amount of cuts I have made with the Metal Max. just the convienece of not having to constantly change diisks is an upside.
