I despise trying to operate the release on a bottle jack with the end of the handle, so I made a knob for it instead... handy for when trying to get something lined up right before pressing.

Chuck a 1" stick of 6061 in the lathe, turn and face, knurl, turn a taper, drill the end, part it off, rechuck the parted off piece using a few layers of paper to prevent damage to the knurling, face and turn 45 degree chamfer. Place in mill vise with V-block and paper, mill slot to size.

Was going to put a setscrew in, but it looks like I nailed the dimensions pretty good and it's a snug fit as is... if it loosens up I can drill/tap for that later.

Works pretty good!

Machine tools used were a Grizzly G0602 lathe (10x22 benchtop) and a HF mill/drill (the big green one, RF31 equivalent).

I do mine with a hole rather then a slot. Press out the roll pin from the release, slide the knob on, then reinstall the pin. Uses the original pin to hold the new knob on. Very nice piece though!

I'm about to make a couple for myself in a similar fashion. The 1" seems a bit small, how does it seem work for you in terms of leverage to open/close? Looks like great work, cheers

Thanks for the comments!

I wasn't sure how easily the original pin would have come out, but that's probably a better way of going about it.

Seems adequate. 1" stock is all I had on hand, but you could easily use larger.
