Finally after 2 years without home shop space I finally have a nice 12x24 space to work in. I have been making do with just a 10x14 metal shed for storage and using the driveway for fair weather projects. While small I can now work inside and keep my tools set up all the time.

I am a woodworker and am a part owner of a small woodworking and cabinet company that has a good sized shop but its hard to work on personal projects there as space is always being used to generate revenue. Also I have recently started my own business, S Squared Design Works. I want to make smaller pieces and experiment with different ideas and techniques. The shop will also have space to store general automotive tools and serve as a space to maintain a small fleet of bicycles.

So I welcome you to the home of S Squared Design Works a 12x24 shed/shop build

Starting point, you can see the old rusted and leaking storage shed in the back

We ended up buying a used Lenord building for a song during the SC State Fair. They will be replacing one piece of vinyl that decided it had some where else to go.

Arriving. we have a tight driveway but the guys were able to get the building exatcly where we wanted it with out too much of a fight

Set in place. The right side will get stone shortly when we redo the drive way.

Inside. the single 2 bulb 8 foot light fixture will be replaced with 4 4 bulb 8 foot lights shortly.

Intimidate plans are to run temporary power. Lift the loft area so I can actually fit under it as its set at 6ft and I'm 6'4". add shelving and storage for all of my power tools wire the shop plumb air lines and add dust collection.

I think this was the fastest build I've seen. I didn't see it and then it was there. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the space.

I should have called it a upfit or outfit and not a build but there will be a lot of sawdust flying over the next few weeks.

Bill,

no plans to heat it beyond a small space heater the building gets a lot of sun and its not too cold here in SC during the winter. Moved here from Erie PA and the snow belt. Cooling might be a window AC unit or just roll the door up and fans

Heavy equipment will be a 10inch cabinet saw and possibly a shaper if I can find a good deal on one. the rest of the tool collection are smaller power tools from Festool and Makita

VERY nice blank canvas, boss!

You can actually add LOTS of loft space with scattered or clustered 4'x12' sections, each requiring 1.5 sheets of plywood and four 2"x6"x12's

Also, I know you're upgrading the lighting, but have you considered adding creature comforts such as insulation, drywall, HVAC, and electronics?

Nice shop and welcome fellow Woodie. I just built a 12x18 shed with 12x10workshop in the front and 8x12 storage in the back.

I fully insulated the walls and the ceiling and then OSB over all of it. Painted it oil based gloss white. It didn't cost that much to insulate and I think in the long run you will kick your self for not doing.

Look forward to following your progress and what you build. Where are the pics of all your sawdust making machines? :D We like lots of pics.

IG: i'm here to learn and watch what you do with your space. currently i have a 10x15 portion of our 2 car garage i can call mine cause my bride likes to park her car on her side. i have a lot of stuff on my side and i might have more cabinet drawers and storage than most guys with a 3 car garage so if you need storage ideas just ask or PM me.

when you say FESTOOL you just made me think about security. those are maybe the best woodworking tools i've ever seen in action. do you have them at work and which ones and how do you like them?

good luck and if you have any questions just ask and one of us might just have the answer. also just an FYI if you are looking for a thread and not sure what section of GJ to look for it GOOGLE tends to find them and it always led me to GJ before i joined as the #1 source for old and probably any tools.

I agree maybe the fastest build yet.

WELL DONE!!

Drivesitfar I have the securty thing address it has a wireless door sensor that is tied into our home system and camera coverage on the front roll up door. Too many people with sticky figures around here.

As for Festool. I have a good collection at the cabinet shop, easily the best sanders on the market right now when paired with their vacs along with their "biscuit" jointer called the domino as well as their router track saw and miter saw. Personally I just bought their new framing track saw and am planing on a few sanders.

BJ I'm still undecided on insulation and type. I really hate working fiberglass batts so I may opt to do radiant barrier solid foam.

As far as sawdust makers this is the new to"y"ol from Festool

my old trusty Delta Sidekick table saw that I do plan on replacing, not sure if I will go with a hybrid cabinet saw or a higher end job site saw and keep the mobile stand. I dont really take my saw anywhere so I am leaning towards a Grizzly hybrid

Here is a video of my big shop that also needs some love and major reorgnazation

Nice shop. I see Grizzly is well liked. I have several Grizzly tools. All of them perform top notch. If my Ridgid TS3650 ever gives out on me I will definitely get a 2hp or 3hp Grizzly cabinet saw. I just got one of their DC's this past year I and I love that thing.

Drives been a little crazy at work and took some time to visit family for Thanksgiving. I haven't done much with my shop space yet but I am working on some small ideas. Bigger news may be coming soon and maybe an actual build thread. Meeting with the bank tomorrow...

IG: sounds and looks interesting. if you have any questions just ask or PM me since i used to sell this stuff for a living. i retired 10 years ago and you are in a different part of the US, but some things never change.

if it's raw land i'd make purchase subject to approved building permit which covers a lot of things like water, sewer/septic, electrical availability, zoning requirements and RESTRICTIONS and so on. usually on raw land we used to get a sort of free look at all the requirements for 30 or so days to get a good feel of what might be required before you start spending your hard earned cash.

since South Carolina's real estate is a lot more reasonable than ours or other parts of the US i'm guessing it's because some of the permitting and other issues are a bit easier, but those planners from here tend to move into areas like yours to plan for their retirement and bring along a lot of baggage.

wishing you all the best.

cheers

Drives my business partner is a new home builder so I deal with a lot of this stuff on a daily basis just going to be for me this time around. I already have the restrictions for the property and know a few people in the development. One of them is a real estate broker that we do a lot of work with. Not that there wont be headaches but at least this isn't my first exposure.

IG: AWESOME!! yes it won't be simple, but sounds about as good as it can be so far. i have kept quiet a few times and wished i would have just mentioned a few of the major points cause some people don't have all the skills and help you have. maybe our posts might help somebody reading your thread to at least ask somebody the questions before spending their life savings and getting a sorry you can't build on that lot at the building department.

good luck just the same and if the subdivision allows it maybe you can move over your little shop/shed on the property as a back up if you want to keep it.

cheers

So round one of the plot is posted before didn't pan out. Seller didn't want to move on his price and the quote to clear the land was more then we wanted to spend for the size of the lot. So we kept looking and today finalized and offer for a total of 1.8 acres over 3 lots for not much more then we were going willing to pay for .68. Once we break ground on that project I will start a thread on the whole house and shop build. For now I have some work to do in the current shop as the wife wants something old and red to care for our new property and or regular income will be ******* in that. Guess it's time to make some sawdust.

Funny how things work out. Roughly this time last year I had the building delivered and started to plan building a new home with my business partner. Things did not work out with my now former partner and we are still working out of the 12x24 building. I did recently finish building a rolling all in one table for my table saw miter saw tool storage and assembly.

Nice little unit there Drew, I'm curious as to why you didna go with a Paulk style workbench? After all, there's a whole lotta love for it among Fesfools. Can you drop a router table into the SCMS space, or is that a future enhancement?

mostly cost. Built this out of what I had on hand for no additional investment a Paulk style bench would have required spending money. I can drop a router table into the space occupied by the miter saw as it is removable.

Here are a few recent projects that have come out of the shop
