OK, This has been awhile coming but starting this build thread seems more important than the Christmas Cards I am supposed to be writing right now.

Anyways....We have been in the house a couple of years figuring out what we wanted. There was just barely enough room in the back to build the garage AKA the "Studio." To get the permit here in our government-run-amok city, we had to call it a STUDIO and not a GARAGE. So pardon me as I don't mean to sound to uppity when I refer to this thing as the studio. in fact it is really......

Yes, a shameless plug for my Walter's Workshop youtube channel which you can get to by clicking HERE

I will be chronicling much of what goes on here and at my buddies shop nite.

Forms for the foundation. We are on the side of a canyon, and had to get down to the rock to lock things in. Untold numbers of dump trucks deposited their terrestrial loads to make things level. Notice where the ground level is compared to the full grown Oak tree directly behind!

In case you're wondering why this design.... well, I was wondering too! The architect's had the most to do with the design. The primary goal, according to my better half, was to match the existing house remodel and fit within the property setbacks and critical root zone of the trees. Since it was going to be by the pool, it had to have that "cabana" feel but also feel a connection to the main house. Whatever. I have to pick my battles. However the outside needed to be was fine by me, all my time is spent on the inside!

I love the design, very modern. Congrats! So, one 18' roll up door or so?

Whats all that other concrete work going on behind it, the pool?

Yes. Long story on that one, but the short version is we needed something to hold the dirt so we could have a flat back yard near the cliff-edge. Since there was going to be a bunch of concrete needed, why not a pool?

Here again, you can see the grade of the yard is more than half-way up the tree behind it. It gets very steep, very quickly.

Here is a 1 minute video of the pool, my first with a drone, before any of the landscaping. You can really get a feel for the edge of the canyon.

Great looking building! The more I see of them the more I like them. How do those compare price wise to a convential pitched roof?

I did not do a side by side comparison, but my guess is a single pitch is less expensive for several reasons.

1) Less material all around. No pre-fabbed trusses. Slightly less sq.foot of roofing, flashing, etc..
2) Less labor. It's just a rectangle and flat! It went on very quickly.
3) Less head scratching. It just seems easier to figure everything out!

..my very unscientific humble opinion.. Thanks for asking, I hadn't really thought about it.

You have a nice place. Does your dog use the door? I gave you a thumbs up on that video. Tell me more about the "rusty muffler." Are you a biker or hot rodder? Any chance I might run into you at the Lone Star Roundup?

Yes I am at the LSRoundup every year. I have two swap booths on the front row between the two big doors. Look for the Darth Vader mannequin. Have been there every year since the beginning! Come on by and have a beer!

I will have to make a long post about how I came up with the "Rusty Muffler" It's just a name for the shop...not commercial in any way, though I do flip the occasional car, truck or motorcycle. I ride, but I would rather works on cars which is why I don't have a Harley Davidson:bounce:

As for Trace, he does not have his own door yet. And thanks for the  on the vid!

Awesome place. The area surrounding Austin is beautiful.

Beautiful Austin Hill Country!

I remember seeing this on the Aircoolers forum.

You sure did. And I have not done squat until recently. I think you may have been the one to tell me, well post anyway, about the GJ. I think it was you, Clint, or Michael Parker that said...."I see that someone mentioned garage journal. Do not, I repeat, do NOT go visit that site. I's like doing crack. Highly addictive & will leave you wanting more - More stuff, more tools, more space, more projects, more of everything..." ....well, here I am!

I can't remember your real name, but I think we may have met at the swap near HEB last year. Is that the same one coming up again?

OK. The lights are up! I found these LED lights at Home Depot for $36.00 each. It seemed like a good deal. I bought eight 4-footers to hang and four 2-footers to mount on the walls.
I ended up only using six hanging from the ceiling and am very happy with the result. I like these lights alot. They look good, though not fancy, and they can link together should I want the shop to shine like the sun. What I like best is I can turn each one off separately. If I want a little less light or if I the light is in my eyese while working on something, I can switch off the offending light.
I used some old jack-chain to try to put the lights in the same plane as the ceiling fans.

thanks for visiting. I'm kinda near 360 & 2222. Looking out the back we can see down 360 across the river out to West lake.

As for swapping , I will swap just about anything. It changes from year to year. One year was V-8 flathead stuff with a Lincoln V-12 thrown in. Lot's of red wagons last year. Right now I am doing Model A stuff trying to get my 29 pickup together. I usually have several friends selling some of their stuff as there is plenty of room. These days I am less about selling stuff as I am about having a place in the middle of all the action. Sort of a base of operations for me and my friends. Shoot me a PM if you want to make arrangements to stop by for a beer this next April:beer:

I used those same lights linked together over the workbench. They are fantastic.
Indeed!
Very cool shop build, and what a nice place you have.
Bret
Thanks. I like your truck. I had a '66 stepside, kinda like yours, a long time ago...one the the few I would love to have back.
