Hey all, first post but been lurking for years. After reading a bunch of threads here on guys building hutches I figured I'd give it a go on a slow day at work. Grabbed some 1" lengths and just started cutting and welding, I had a rough idea of what height I wanted, somewhat determined by the wall control I bought. Anyways, still have to make the door, thinking a simple bi fold with piano hinges that's easily removable as I don't see myself using it much. Still have to powder coat it flat black and possibly weld a piece of angle stock to block the brightness of the led light. Thoughts or opinions appreciated, should be into it for 30% of snap on's riser but with 8" of extra height(2 guys at work have risers on 1023's and the height is equal to my nose).

What did you use for the sheeting, i'm assuming steel but how thick? How much do you have into it at this point? I was going to ask what you used for the back pieces with the peg holes and slots but I did a quick search for "steel pegboard" and found a place that sells steel pegboard and it's flanged on the sides and back. http://diamondlifegear.com/pegboard.htm#buynojmp

Used 14 ga for sheeting, into it for about $1k cdn at this point. Got the doors bent up and riveted a piano hinge to them, hung them by 2 bolts at the top and still have to weld a couple open position holders. Powder coat next week.

I just found a pic of an older style hutch from Snap On, it makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm gonna slap a snappy decal on it when it's done lol.

So how exactly does the door hinge open? Does the lower half fold outward on top of the upper half and then how does the upper half move?

I'm not sure about the snap on one but mine folds up and out, it'll sit at an angle upwards which doubles as a blind for the 4 ft LED light I have in it. The top door is hinged on top using 2 5/16" bolts, one cut off with the shoulder protruding and the other threads in to the shoulder where the door hinges. I might add a few washers to stiffen that around the bolt shoulders. I'll take some pics with it opened up next week when I finish it up. I might leave the doors off altogether but I figured if I didn't add them before powder coat I probably never would.

Looks like you could use a power bank, or power strip built into it somewhere. Maybe have some USB ports?

I always liked those cheap led strip lights sold on Amazon or eBay. You could stick them to your part of the square tubing that's not visible, and wouldn't need to hide em.. could even wrap the verticals and your shelf with it. They are extremely inexpensive to buy.

Already have the light, it's so damn bright I'm glad the doors block it when they're up. Also already hogged out a hole with a rubber grommet for an extension bar with a triple usb outlet. Can't get too cozy in there til it's painted and done.

Just trying to wrap my head around the bifold open..

Love the design.. would like to duplicate this for my two race boxes..

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
I dig it a lot! Nice job, I've contemplated something similar due to being tall, the offerings from Snap On & Matco place the top edge at the bottom of my forehead, so I would have to place rollaway up on blocks. This way I could customize it to my specific needs.

Been busy at the shop so no forward movement on the hutch yet lol. The door folds out and up and will stick up and out at an upward angle once I weld the rests for it to the side of the inner wall. As for the slots n dots, ordered the panels off amazon, the most common size was 32" x 16".

Thanks guys, it wasn't that bad to build. It only took me 5 hours to build the frame from square stock lengths. The door was the hardest part but I made it easily removable in case I don't use it/like it. Total came in at about a third of what a Snap on one would be and it's larger.
