Lee Valley typically only offers pretty good quality items. The are mostly known for woodworking items but have some pretty cool general use items as well. Based on my experience with everything I've purchased from them in the past, I would not be afraid to give these a try. Their line of hand planes are as good as they get?

Knipex Cobra knock-offs have been around for years now, and this is no different.

Like someone already pointed out, these are imported from Taiwan. The OEM is Daiken:
http://www.daikentools.com/index.php/product. If you look at their general product range, they like to design their tools to mimic the famous plier brands.

I went to Lee Valley last week and thought I'd share a couple photos that I took:

Cheaper construction for sure:

The two weak links would be the slotted pivot section and the bottom of the V- in the jaws.

Tangential, a plant I once worked in switched over to Proto slip-joint pliers as they were cheaper than the Channellocks. HOWEVER, so many average strength people broke the slotted pivot section of the pliers out, it actually became more expensive....

Funny story short version: One day while walking around waiting for my wife I was looking at the following pair of pliers and I thought Woody you have never seen that brand before. looks like knipex but with a rather different name, I wonder if it a knockoff...

No knockoff but it took me by surprise not sure if anyone on the GJ had ever heard of them before.:dunno:

I got a really great set of knipex from Napa a while back. It was when they were having one of thier tent sales and it didnt have a price on the set, so I asked and they went and looked it up, I don't think they found the corrct one cuz they quoted me $30. I didnt argue, I didnt question them, and I bought them quick fast and in a hurry.

Orbis have been talked about a bit on here. Usually in the Knipex threads. I've pondered them a few times while at Menards but haven't pulled the trigger.

Orbis is a german brand and are owned by Knipex. Also orbis has recently come with cobra styled pliers of their own.
Illegal copies may have existed, now since cobra patent has expired too, others have started to make similar cobra style pliers. Toptul makes them, also toptul copies knipex cobolt and knipex snap pliers so well, looks so similar. Hazet and Gedore have cobra styled pliers too. You could buy 2 knipex cobra for the price of 1 hazet in this case.
