I've been getting good info off this site for several months while I waited for my 36x64x12 Morton to be manufactured and shipped. I have been waiting many years to construct a shop like this. It arrived 10 days ago and construction started last Wednesday. I had the limestone base pad built a couple months ago as I opted to go with pouring the concrete slab after the building was built. I was a bit nervous when they were drilling the piers last week as the soil profile in my area is lots of limestone and some soil. They only had a problem drilling one of the 4'9" deep holes. They hit a large rock at about the 2 foot depth. They poured the concrete for the piers on Thursday morning and began constructing the frame later that day. They got rained out on Saturday noon otherwise they would have had the building completely constructed. The concrete crew will be arriving on Wednesday to do the prep work and the pour is scheduled for Thursday noon. In addition to concrete on the inside I am going to have them pour a 20'x44' slab out front with a 100'x10' concrete drive from my asphalt driveway to the slab. I am also having them do a 60'x3' sidewalk to my house. The crew will come back the following Monday to install the insulation and then it's time for me to finish the rest.
A little background on why I chose Morton. My father had Morton build a 45x90 back in 1974 on our farm in northern North Dakota for a shop and machinery storage. He was the envy of the neighborhood farmers with a shop that nice. I went back to the farm this summer and the inside of the building still looked new and the paint on the outside was faded but still in good shape for being 43 years old and withstanding many hail storms. I remember that Morton treated him well with their warranty. Ten years after it was built, one of the large sliding doors wouldn't close so a crew came out and built a new one. They also replaced several walk through doors at no cost. With a reputation like that it was hard for me to go with another builder.
I will try to continue taking and posting pictures of my progress. There is lots more work to be done.

The concrete contractor showed up today and got the inside all ready for the 11am concrete pour tomorrow. They will be back on Friday morning to pour the outside slab.

Welcome to GJ . . . . that's a great looking shop !!

Curious if you have any other large roll-up doors on other parts of building so you have drive-thru ability ??? These could also assist in ventilation/cooling.

So I've been pretty busy the last several weeks getting the inside ready for sheetrock and trenching outside for utilities. I had 3 of my brothers here to help for a week so we got the inside framed out. Before they got here, I sprayed PS101 concrete sealer on the concrete after a couple days of curing. After they left I trenched for the 200 amp electrical service, wastewater line to my septic system, water line and cat6/rg6 cables from my house for Directv and internet service.

I am going to be using this LED strip light from Home Depot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/EnviroLi...-with-T8-LED-5000K-Tubes-ST704T1850/300380331 I called the manufacturer for a light layout in my 36'x50'x12' high work area with 6 windows and white sheetrocked walls. The came back with 48 of these 8' light strips would be needed. That would be nearly $4000 for lights that would occupy most of my ceiling area. I think I will scale back considerably and put in several recessed LED lights above my work bench to supply extra light if needed.

Some where on the electrical page I think there's a link to a program to tell you how many bulbs you need.

I kinda went silent for several months while I was working on finishing out the inside. The Morton photographer called and said they wanted to take some pictures and put it on their website so here is the link. https://mortonbuildings.com/project/4531
As with any shop, there is always something to build or organize. The new dry cut metal chop saw that I ordered is set to arrive today so will be constructing my metal mobile work/welding station this weekend along with a rack to hold all of my HF parts containers.

Pic on Morton's website looks awesome. A very nice building. Have you finalized your lighting situation?

Yes, I bought 12 of the lights from the link that I posted before. I installed 2 rows of 5 lights in the main work area and two of them in the "lounge" area. I've had several comments of "Damn, you have to wear sunglasses when you work in here?" Plenty of light. I couldn't imagine how bright it would have been to have 4 times that many lights as recommended by the manufacturer. They were pretty simple to install with my sheetrock jack so I am pretty happy with them.

Hi DarMar, Great looking finished product...the video on the Morton site was awesome! I have been a long time lurker trying to research/decide what direction is best for me.

So, with that said, I am getting ready to build a pole barn 40 x 60 or 32 x 56 and was wondering what you used for insulation and AC/Heat? I plan to climate control the entire space to make it comfortable in summer/winter conditions.

I appreciate any insight/help you may have.

Thanks

Wow, hadn’t checked in since you started construction. It looks fantastic and the Morton website pics are great!
I had another red metal building put up and the crew was very impressed with the Morton building as well.

Steve,
For the walls, I had Morton install their insulation, which I think is R13, that fits between the wood columns perfectly. For the ceiling, I blew in 18" of fiberglass insulation. I also have insulated doors.
I bought the Mr. Cool 36k BTU ductless mini split that I wired and installed myself. I actually wired my shop for two of them but only installed one to see what it would be like in the summer months. This summer was the first test of it. I can get it down to around 79-80 degrees in 2 or 3 hours at a starting temp of low 90's. Thats fine with me since that air has very low humidity so you don't sweat while working. Last winter, which was colder that most winters, it didn't get below 62 degrees inside even when I didn't run the heater for several days. It didn't take long for it to warm up to mid 70's with the ductless mini split. It was much easier to heat in winter than it is to cool in the summer.

Thanks Duker. I love the Morton building and glad I built it. It's a great place to escape to when my wife and two daughters get to be more than I can handle.
Did you see the pictures on the Morton site of the knock off of the workbench that SteveO did as well as the one you did. Works awesome with the 12ga steel top I put on it.

Very nice shop!
Did you think about walking off the lounge area to help keep it clean when you're making a mess working on something?

Great Shop. We had a Morton Horse Barn growing up and 20 years later that building looks just as good as new. Obviously a great investment!

Yes I thought about walling off the lounge area but wanted to keep it open so I could watch tv or listen to music while working at the bench or on a project. When I need to cut some lumber or make a mess I can take it outside and do it so it doesn't get so messy inside. I've also got another small shop where I can make a big mess and it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the compliments. Here is a recent picture of my Dad's shop in northern North Dakota. It's 45 years old and still looks new on the inside. He was the envy of the neighborhood when he built it. One side was insulated with a furnace and the other had a gravel floor where we parked all the farm equipment. Its withstood many blizzards and hail storms over the years. The farm has been abandoned for the last 10 years so the maintenance has slipped a little.
