Lucky No. 7 Rod & Customs Garage Build.

This is my 2 car attached garage. I have owned the house for about two years now. The garage itself has not made many changes since I purchased the house, due to three kids and a project truck taking most of my time and money. But, the stuff in the garage and organizing has changed a lot. I found this website through my project truck forum. I LOVE and HATE this site! Thank you to dubber, 55cadillacking, Derrickwade, ekraft84 and E46M3 my O.C.D. has kicked into overdrive. You will all be receiving a portion of my psychiatric bill. Sorry for the bad initial photos because they were taken for my project truck build thread. But, you can see how the garage has progressed in the surrounding areas. The enablers listed above will be my inspiration for this build.

Here is my garage shortly after moving in and purchasing my project truck.

Here is an overall shot of the garage in the background with my initially intended parts truck after tearing down the original project truck.

Here are some pictures of my garage at it's lowest point. I have to keep all of my non-running vehicles in my garage due to neighborhood regulations.

After rolling out the parts truck, organizing, hauling some junk off to the dump, selling some stuff and chopping up my original project truck frame and storing the metal, this is what it looks like now.

And everyone knows that good help is hard to find. So, I try to keep my helper happy. My dad and I were very close until he passed away suddenly. So, I know how important it is to spend time with him every chance I get. Some of my fondest memories of my dad are times we spent together in the garage or at the racetrack. I may not be as productive, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

And a random picture of my dad and I. I was the same age in the photo as my son in the photo above and my dad was about the same age as me in the photo above. The picture was taken of my dad and I in his custom chopped '66 c10 he built himself.

Yeah I kind of figured that was coming since all the **** I have been giving you. But, now you can see why I need your help and am envious of your nice clean organized space. I have two trucks, lawn equipment, tools and family storage stuff in my garage adding to the chaos.

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

The first thing I have planned for my garage is to paint the walls and ceiling. I have always been a fan of the black, white, gray and red color combination. I am thinking of painting my ceiling black, because I like the modern look it gives. I also like it's hiding capabilities. I am also thinking of doing a black and white skyline mural on the left wall if I am able to arrange everything correctly and still be 100% functional. The other three walls I am unsure of. I want to make sure that the garage does not become too dark, so I was thinking solid white with black trim. But, white walls will be hard to keep clean and I don't want it to look too plain or barren. I also keep going back and forth between black and red racedeck flooring and epoxy coat. Here are a few photos attempting to explain my vision. If anyone has any comments or suggestions on my options, feel free to comment.

Hiding capabilities of black ceiling.

Similar skyline image for left wall.

The wall the mural would be going on.

Black ceiling with black and white mural. Ignore the fact that they are giant faces.

Flooring choice. Racedeck or epoxy?

Racedeck. I like the modern look and subtle checkerboard pattern with the pop of red. Adds some color and attention to the floor. (Thanks in advance to dubber and 55cadillacking for the photos.)

I also like the sleek, reflective look of the epoxy coat. At least in the photos it sort of looks like black marble. I am not sure if this is how it appears in person or not. (Thanks in advance to ekraft 84 and E46M3 for the photos.)

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

Well i like the ideas, although i would just caution against black for the ceiling. Maybe if you had a loftier ceiling in there it might work better, or with a ceiling with multiple levels. Just my opinion anyway. However in saying that, if you had a lot of lights you could offset that i'm sure. If you had multiple suspended fluorescent shop lights in there it could be great with a black ceiling.

p.s. Love that pic, made me reminisce a little bit :)

That is my concern as well. I had a living room with black ceiling and loved it. It was a 15 foot ceiling though. I do plan on lighting it up like an operating room so lack of lighting will not be a problem. You can never have too many lights.

I am trying to come up with something clean, with a blend of a little modern and a little urban. I buy and sell vehicles a lot so, I don't want it to be vehicle specific. Just nice and clean where any vehicle will look at home.

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

I am going to try to get some measurements of my garage and big items I know are staying so you guys can help me figure out the best layout. I have a lot of wasted space up high that could be utilized, so I am thinking of building a soffit similar to the picture below on three walls to help store stuff up high. It would just be kind of a pain to get too, since I would have to get a ladder out everytime I needed something. So I could only store stuff I didn't use very often. But, my philosophy is if it would be ok to put it up that high and I didn't use it very often. I would rather get rid of it then store it for that long. Anyone have any better ideas for utilizing that space?
Thanks for the picture XcYZ.

Sweet truck! Accuair?

I was contemplating epoxy or racedeck.. went with a used racedeck option that I found on Craigslist.

For your upper storage I suggest some sturdy shelving.... That way you can see what you have up there and you should just need a step stool... I store a lot of car parts up high till I need them...

For the floor i vote racedeck!

If you would like lots of work bench space then consider some fold down benches off the side walls and some more sturdy benches on the back wall...

I really like the father son projects!!!!

Your not done yet? :)

Almost dubber. All I like is finishing up. :D

Dang, that black floor looks great that you showed. Wishing I had gone darker. :)

Thanks. I think yours looks really good too. One thing I like about yours is it is still versatile and looks great even when you change the layout of your garage and add rugs. I know if I ordered racedeck, as shown in the pictures above, and then had to make changes to where a portion of the red border was covered or blocked, my O.C.D. could not handle that.

Thanks man. You can check out my build thread in my signature. Truck was a basket case when I got it, but I am chipping away at it S-L-O-W-L-Y. I am going to run Accuair when finished. Thanks for the support!

Thanks for the input and encouragement! I am starting a new job soon and will no longer be working six days a week, so hopefully I will be able to make some good progress on the truck and the garage very soon! :fingersx:

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

I thought about building soffit cabinets in my garage like XcYZ or bdamico, but I was going to construct them more like this so the walls would carry the entire load:
http://www.familyhandyman.com/garage/storage/installing-large-garage-cabinets/step-by-step

Then I saw bshusted's thread where he built individual cabinet frames using a Kreg jig and attached Ikea doors. It seemed like less effort to achieve a finished look, and it could also be completed in stages as I figure out the rest of my storage.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=233004&page=5

There are three standard BESTA door heights available but only one width. My plan is to install some 18" deep cabinets up high and 8" deep cabinets below and see how the space develops as I put things away. Although I don't plan to do this, mounting the cabinets on French cleats would make them easy to rearrange or even uninstall and relocate to the next garage.

Thanks for the tips! I really like the look of those Ikea doors. I know I will put those to use somewhere. I am hoping to get back into racing again in the future. Those doors would be great in a race trailer. Thanks again!

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

I got a quote from an electrician about doing some work for me. He quoted me $450.00 which includes wiring two 8 foot shop lights which he provides, wiring 220 plug for my welder, installing two new ceiling fan fixtures on my back porch (receptacles and switch already wired just installing the fans which I provide) and we are going to knock out a wall between our kitchen and dining room so he will also move the three receptacles from the wall being removed. I thought this sounded like a good price. Any opinions? Also, I am not sure if only two eight foot lights will be enough lighting. My dads body shop had three overhead lights and one on each side wall. So, I was thinking I wanted at least three overhead lights. I don't want any on the side walls. Opinions or suggestions?

By the sounds of it there will be a fare amount of work for him to do and $450 does not seem high to me. Around here it would cost about $100 an hour for an electrician.

That's what I thought as well. He said he was going to charge me $60 an hour.

Hahaha. Nice save. That's what I think too, about the amount of lighting. When you start doing body work and painting you can never have too many lights. I think I am going to go with three lights and see how it looks and then I can always add more.

Perfect plan. I added two 4 foot, 4 bulb shop lights which was great, now i want more. Planning on adding a couple more.

I did a little spring cleaning this weekend. It always amazes me how much free space I can create by cleaning and re-organizing when things get scattered and crowded.

Wow! Yea that is crazy. I was looking at the empty pics thinking thats a pretty huge garage, then i saw all the stuff on the driveway. Time to purge or find some other storage options to maximize the space in the garage. Any chance for a shed? Looks like you have two riding lawnmowers?

I have a pile of stuff to haul off to the scrapyard. Hopefully this weekend. I also hopefully have someone coming to buy the blue body c10 tomorrow as well. That should create a lot of free space. I have been looking to purchase a storage shed for some time. Only thing is my neighborhood has regulations on size and it has to match your house. I really haven't had an extra $3,000 in my budget for a storage building. But, that will hopefully be an option in the future. And finally, I do have two riding lawnmowers right now. The red and black one is the one I use. I purchased the green John Deere from a guy I work with for cheap in hopes of getting it running and making a little money. (Like I need another project. But, hopefully some small projects here and there will help fund the truck and garage builds.)

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

There are many ways create storage in the space. You have just had to get creative and think outside the box a little bit. Sheds can be expensive and some deed restrictions are limiting to what you can and cannot have so I will try to use your garage as much as possible first and then use the shed or outdoor cabinets as storage to eliminate some things in the garage

I bought a few tools from a friend this afternoon. I know their are a lot of vice/grinder gurus on here. Does anyone have any information/value on the bench grinder. I thought the company badging was pretty neat. It is an Electr-O-Grinder Model 1180. I thought I got a pretty good deal for $65.00 for everything. A new 1/2 inch Craftsman ratchet, 1/4 inch Snap-On Ratchet, 3/8 swivel head Snap-On Ratchet, A new package of small Craftsman wrenches and the bench grinder.

The results of my cleaning and selling the truck today left me with a lot of free space. Much better than before. Here are two before and after pics.

I am glad I finally have some free space to work on my truck and start organizing and working on the garage. It's about time.

Everything on this wall is going away soon. I have the lights on the stand sold to a guy at work. I will be re-using some of the metal to build a roll around cart for my cab and scrapping the rest very soon. I will also be scrapping the wheels in boxes and selling the ******** boards (or giving them to my brother or a friend.)

IMG_80501_zps44117eb6.jpg

Also I know I just posted this recently, but I have not been able to find any info on my new grinder. I have searched for the company to find any info and came up with nothing. I searched for the specific brand and model number and found nothing. I also searched for a vendor of that brand which also turned up with nothing. Anyone have any info. Is it a good brand? Cheap brand? Year of production? Rare? I have no idea. I also could not find a date anywhere either. It is an Electr-O-Grinder Model 1180.

I got a couple freebies today.

IMG_85631_zpsxjdrmxnq.jpg

I temporarily taped the side vents until I can get the style I want. I didn't want to put screws in my window.

I also lucked out and got this for free. BIG help for storage and cleaning out the garage.

Also, had the electricians come and do a little work.

The lights make a BIG difference, and I am excited to get my new welder fired up and lay down some welds.

I've said it before and I continue to believe it, sheds save garages! Nice score! And the lights never hurt, the more the merrier. What a difference they make eh. Can't believe how high that Beemer is stock, looks like a two fist wheel gap.

I've said it before and I continue to believe it, sheds save garages! Nice score! And the lights never hurt, the more the merrier. What a difference they make eh. Can't believe how high that Beemer is stock, looks like a two fist wheel gap.

I lucked out on the shed. Right place at the right time. I helped a lady I work with move and she said if you see anything you want let me know. As we walked around the back of the house I saw the shed and jokingly said I would like to have that shed. She said if you want to move it you can have it. Never hurts to ask I guess.

I would really like to get rid of the wheel gap on the BMW. I would like to drop it and tint the windows. Maybe I will get to that soon.

Re: My 2 Car Attached Garage Build

I bought a shelf from Sam's Club today and organized my scrap metal and truck parts.

Made a big difference in cleaning up this corner.

I am going to load up everything in front of my toolbox and air compressor, as soon as it stops raining, and take it to the dump or scrap. First, I have to unload the concrete blocks on my trailer, that I picked up yesterday to build a foundation for my storage building, and then load up all the junk.

Everything from the corn hole boards to the lawnmower is going to be sold, or go in the storage building.

Now that everything is starting to get cleaned up and on track. I am going to get back on fixing the lawnmower. I already have it sold to my little brother, as soon as it is fixed. Then my son and I can get back on finishing up his mini street bike project too.

I still have to clean up this last corner. That will be a project for the next rainy day.
