I helped a buddy move a refrigerator from his basement to a storage building, I saw a big vise in his basement, I made the comment, "nice vise! "

Today I came home and it was sitting in my garage! I almost s**t!

I called him and he said he was just greatful to have the fridge moved and didn't use it anyway...

It is a beast to lift!

Great... now my photos won't load...

Sounds like a good friend! Does he have any more fridges to move?

I like that the comparison bottle of Bud is half gone :)

Nice 6 inch. It's cool that he gave it you without you having to ask.
That shows how much he appreciated your help and didn't take it for granted.

Now you have to find space for that monster....

Man, what a friend! I'd take that as thanks over a 12 pack of Shiner anyday.

Easy now, let's not be hasty. It's only a vice after all.
A nice frosted glass from the freezer, filled with cold Shiner Hefewizen....

Older American made vices (5 to 10 inch) can have been originally priced at a couple of thousand dollars or more!!

No ****.

I am talking about factory used ones in machine shops. I got mine when the factory moved from Chicago to Huntley IL and threw many treasures into their steel recycle dumpster.

The factory policy was to prohibit the employees from buying "scrap" up.

They were bought out by a Japanese conglomerate and they have the gall to complain that we used the atomic bomb on them!!! Luckily the security guards were smart enough to see where a buck could be made and I got 3 humongous vices, a couple of bench type grinding wheels with their pedestals, a very good and heavy lathe, a heavy band saw, a smaller milling machine and an industrial grinding machine.

This is in addition to buckets of brand new files of all shapes and sizes (including exotic one like curved ones and one and two sided files of all "numbers" (grits) and buckets of drill bits and reamers and all manners and sizes of taps.

We loaded up our pickups for many trips and I do not think that I spent more that around 75 dollars!!! This was in the late sixties but was still considered to be peanuts money wise!!

I still use these machines and equipment--which is a testament of how well they were constructed.

They moral turpitude of the company was evident in their refusal to let the employees buy up thousands of dollars worth of good American ( and some German) machine shop equipment was beyond the pale but luckily the security staff (yes they made minimum wages to start but were not stupid) allowed us to get machinery of the caliber to start our own business in some cases (most part time moonlighting but like me allowed a full time occupation in industrial repairs.

In the end most of the employees commuted 64 miles one way to the get to the new factory!! They made less per hour and lost their factory sponsored pensions as the pensions were not protected under new ownership!! ( this was due to the 100 percent factory contribution of the pensions. If there were any employee contributions the pension fund would have been protected--A class action lawsuit did result in some compensation, but not much.
