It has begun. Today was the first day of tangible progress on my shop. After being in permit (Development and Building) limbo for 8 months everything finally went through.

Started today with a rented bobcat to work at leveling the pad for the shop. It was about 3' difference from high side to low corner. (metal posts show corners of the shop). The view from the shop will be decent to looking out at the Rockies:thumbup:

After about 8 hours on the bobcat digging about 1' of frost and lots of roots I made about 2' of progress in the cut out of the top. Hope to get it fully leveled out by tomorrow at noon.

My current garage is overstuffed and pretty much unusable as cluttered as it is. A good amount of tools/parts and a car have to live in my racing trailer.

Phantom, I am in Cochrane.

Today finished the rough leveling. It is good enough to get the building up and has drainage cut to keep water off the pad area. Ended up filling about 18" of good clay in the low corner after cutting the grass/topsoil out. Also put the trees in a nice pile to have a camp fire tomorrow night with the family. 2 of the 4 quality inspectors had to come check it out too.

Wow that is a killer location! Gf keeps sending me links to acreages between Calgary/Cochrane/Sundre/carstairs and beyond. I told her that quadrant is my only consideration.

Have been cruising the free section in local classifieds and found a few great scores. A 12' long countertop for a work bench, and numerous cabinets/material racks. Hoping to pick up 5 sheets of plexiglass from a hockey rink (full 4x8 sheets) to use for a wall. Storing them in my connex until the shop is up. I love my little old ford ranger for this stuff.

Here is the layout of the shop along with the framing plan for the mezzanine. All made from 2x8. Triple center beam, double edge beam, posts on 12' centers.

Lots of good news from yesterday, the builders want to start over a week early and will be onsite tomorrow! They are telling me about 10 days to complete. Here are the free scores from yesterday. Metal topped cabinet with casters on it from an old coffee shop. Bulk wood storage rack. And the glass was different than described on the phone, they are tempered glass and there are 5 pieces that are 6' tall and 7 pieces that are 5' tall (about 28' total width between them). I think they will work very well for a glass wall in the shop.

Great day today. The contractor leveled the pad better for me, augured and stood all the poles and cut them to height. I moved the horse shelter I had beside my connex as well to clean up the yard. Also scored some more free shelves. My two year old son watched them for about 2 hours today in a trance.

Did have a couple neighbors come in hot and yelling over the shop going up, explained that I had all permitting in place and they left mad but at the town, not me.

More progress. Half a day of framing and they are almost done the walls. Trusses on this afternoon! Also getting my house shingled so the yard is bustling. Also found out I will be moving temporarily for work for 18 months in may..... But on the plus side I get from now until the end of may off at full pay!

Lots of progress today. They finished all wood framing and installed all the windows (my pictures were before it got dark out so they aren't final progress for the day). They tell me they will be done everything Thursday. We also had about 2" of snow this morning which didn't help anyone out.

Looks great! You weren't kidding that our builds are similar. Did I see you're going to run a loft down one side of the building as well?

Yep. I am running a 16' wide loft down one entire side.
Nice! I was thinking between 8-10' on mine. Have you picked out the colors yet? I like your idea of the 2nd story windows for the loft. You just have a way better view than me [emoji2]

My local bylaws say the exterior colours need to match my house so the walls are green, white trim, and a brown roof.

So the builders did quite well yesterday and tinned out the roof and almost 3 walls. They would have finished today but we had 4" of thick wet snow and they couldn't make it. Now with the holiday weekend they won't be back until Monday. The snow/moisture also kills my plans to trench in the power cable and the drainage system this weekend as well.... I figured I could get some pre-work done on the mezzanine by putting all the joist hangers on the 2x8s and then hanging them on the posts. Not the easiest by yourself.

So the builder finished yesterday and I am very happy with the quality, finish and the colour choices. I finished the inside framing to get ready for the mezzanine. I like how my truck looks so small inside! I welded some temporary 1/4" plate pads on the bottom of my column supports to hold them until the concrete gets placed. Plan for tomorrow is to trench in the drainage piping, and possible trench in the power cable.

I ordered a few lights from Amazon. For the price they had the best warranty and price per lumen. Made in China but I thought I would try them out and see how they work for a while before ordering the balance.

Why would the neighbors be mad???

People are funny about things like this. Most of my neighbors have lived here for 20 years or so and don't like change. Reasons I have been told are that it is developing the area for industry (not true), ruining the view of the mountains (possibly true for one guy), and it is too big to get approved by the town (not true).

I had to get a development permit from the town for it and they put it in the paper, and mailed it to my immediate neighbors to see if there was any issues. No one responded so I got it approved.

First thing this morning while waiting for the excavator to arrive I finished my 3 ply 2x8 (screwed on 8" from each side and glued). Once the excavator arrived I trenched around the building for the weeping tile and also the downspout collectors. I am backfilling more or less by hand so it may take a while to get it all covered up with the wash rock. I also trenched in the main power feed but couldn't backfill it because I couldn't find the correct marking tape....

Looks like the makings of a great shop. Nice looking Buick; my Dad got a '57 Century in a similar color scheme, plus tons more chrome. Car was pretty fast, too, as he surprised a lot of mid '60's muscle cars in stoplight grand prix!

Finished up the undergrounds today. Filled in the electrical cable with the fancy tape, and did the other side drainage stuff.

Made progress this morning despite the 4" of heavy wet snow AGAIN today. I hoisted up the main beam and started tieing in the joists. It is going really slick so far and I hope to have that section framed out today! (Don't mind the temporary post at the end)

Framed out the first section, and will have power on by tomorrow at noon! Things go a lot slower working by yourself but it forces you to be creative to make it happen. Building inspector passed the main building today with no issues too. Mentioned the electrical panel needed to be mounted inside vapor barrier to prevent moisture in it so I moved it in and will plastic behind it when that time comes.
