Wow, just found this while cruising.

Corded Brushless Hitachi 4.5" grinder, pretty stacked specs as well. $190

_Ultra efficient AC Brushless motor that permits the use of extra long extension cords without power loss

_ Superior performance when using a generator due to an internal inverter circuit that regulates uneven power supply

_ Powerful 12-Amp motor produces a powerful 1,300 watts input power for tough grinding applications

_Ultra slim grip circumference (due to the Brushless motor) that reduces fatigue and improves control, especially during continuous use applications

_Variable speed switch allows the user to determine the best speed for the application

_ Electronic overload protection is an electronic feature that stops the motor when too much pressure is applied

_ Slide switch with trigger lock-on for comfortable and continuous operation

_ Kick-back reduction quickly shuts off power in the event of a bound wheel, extending the life of the gears and protecting the user from potential harm

_ 4.2 lbs, lightweight design facilitates maneuverability and ease in overhead use applications

_ Recommended uses: stone polishing, surface finishing, rust and paint removal, light grinding, concrete finishing, wire cup and wire wheel applications

Man that thing looks comfortable. Ive always had a thing for Hitachi, they were my first brand to buy a lot of back 10yrs ago. They seem to offer a lot of bang for the buck.

Its made in China, and is priced similar to a variable speed Metabo.... which I just bought and absolutely love. But still....

I wondered when we'd start seeing corded brushless tools. All it requires is a power supply compact enough to fit within it. It would be the best of both worlds - unlimited runtime, and precise control of power and torque that brushless gives you. Also less waiting for the tool to wind down, brushless motors have better braking characteristics.

The only negative that comes to mind is durability, as this makes the tool more complicated vs an ac brushed motor and simple speed control circuit. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to brushless corded tools.

BAM!

These guys are floating around Ebay for $105-125 right now! Amazon for $130!

Bought two.

Brushless motor, variable speed, lighter weight, and that skinnyass neck is wonderful!

A few notes after hands on testing...

Brushless Hitachi:
_ skinny barrel, very very comfortable
_ excellent balance, 50/50 right at the pointer finger location (or where the barrel flares out)
_ quiet, like half the noise of the others.
_ lighter 4.2lbs vs 6.5lbs for WEV Metabo
_ made in China

A absolutely lovely grinder for $125, I could see my whole arsenal moving over to these. The lower noise plus skinny barrel are awesome. Performance wise I would say they are very similar to the Metabo WEV series, maybe not as bullet proof, time will tell?

IIRC, the (discontinued) Porter Cable low profile RO sander had a brushless motor.

tarbellb - could you tell me what the diameter of the round section where the guard would go on the Hitachi is? I want to see if an attachment would fit on there. Thanks!

I like it. For me, it's all about how long it lasts for how much it costs and if its gear assembly feels like a box of rocks after 50hrs of use.

I and co-workers have probably gone though over 50 angle grinders over the years, so any improvement to someone slaving away with one if these is always welcome.
