Finally (almost after 9 years on here :eyecrazy:) i decided to start a thread in the garage gallery about my "garage". Well it´s not mine (i rented a space there) and there are other renters in the garage....

Some questions:

How does the rented space work? Common areas for everyone? Any trust/security issues?

Are all your tools located here or do you have a small selection at home as well?

Thanks for sharing Monte...how common are G-bodies over there in Germany?
I don´t have exact numbers but G-bodies are quite common. I think you see B-bodies more often though. That doesn´t mean that american cars are common over here....unfortunately....in a magazine i read that there are about 25.000 american "oldtimer" cars (= older than 30 years) in germany.
I think most american cars were imported at the end of the 1970´s to the beginning of the 80´s when these cars were officially imported. Nowadays you only can get "grey imports" (iirc only Ford sells the Mustang officially here and GM the Corvette)
What year is the Monte Carlo ?
It´s a 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS. The last RWD Monte Carlo :) :(
Thank you :)
Wow Monte. What took you so long?
I had to fill the space with stuff  ;)

Everybody has their section/field, usually from one to another of the white vertical beams you see in the pictures. So everybody basically works in his field. You can ask if you can use their lift or so of course. I lock everything for "borrowing-without-asking" reasons.... :) but usually things doesn´t disapear...they´re just somewhere else... :)
I do have a few mechanics/electricians tools at home and also garden tools. But i usually work in the garage...

Had I known you actually had a monte, well it just would have been better. PM me with your address and I will ship you a surprise that is so one of a kind, you will never get another one.

I have had a fetish for 1978 to 1980 montes myself. Unfortunately I don't even have one anymore, just lots of spare parts.

Very nice garage. Are all the tools shown yours? So, is the stall with the Monte and the one with the lift considered your space? It's a huge building and doesn't look insulated. Can you use it year round or only during the warmer months?

I had a 84 Monte Carlo, love those cars. I wouldn't mind having a clean 87 luxury sport model right now.
Thanks for sharing Monte, cool bench vise!

Great space! Thanks for posting!

Really is better to post pictures without tidying up, lets us know it is worked in.

How far from your house to the shop?

That's some belt grinder you have.

Very nice space!
It's quite astonishing that you can have a place like that without worrying about tools getting stolen.
That says a lot about Germany.
The way the workshop looks is very cool. Very industrial looking.

Are LS engine swaps taking place over there like they are here in the US?
No unfortunately not :(. It is a bit more complicated over here because of emission regulations and TUV inspections...You need a new emission test certificate ($€$€) and probably new brakes etc. because of the increased performance compared to the original. But i will try it :)

ok i will :)
Snag one up until it´s too late...One day demolition derbies and monster trucks will have killed all Montes :)

Yes all the tools belong to me. The Monte parking lot is how everything started and later i rented the other place where the lift now is installed too. Unfortunately it is not insulated so in the winter you should wear warm clothes :) We use it the whole year...In the winter (and during the year) it´s sometimes colder inside than on the outside and in the summer it´s warmer inside than outside....fridge/oven effect i guess :)

Nice ! I love those 1981 to 1988 Montes too :)...especially the LS and SS models ...and the 1981 to 1988 Cutlass models as well as the 81 to 87 Regals...(Grand National...Turbo...)

Thanks  I drive about 27km (about 17 miles). It takes about 25 to 30 minutes. (Autobahn mostly). If i can borrow my fathers car at least :). Since i don´t own a ridable car right now.....with bus and train it takes about 1.5 hours

In the beginning i couldn´t sleep well...but now it´s ok... :)...there are groups from outside of germany though who travel through the country to see if they need something...maybe i will install something that sends me a SMS in case of....
btw. Thanks !
Monte.Do you like the bosch bench grinder?Coo?
Btw, nice place!!!
yes, it is very nice. Plenty of power (550 watt, 400 volt) and unstoppable (except you pinch something into the wire wheel :)) runs smooth too. Made in Bulgaria. The new ones are from China (different design too). Used is ok i think for this type of tool...brands to look for: Bosch, AEG, Greif, Metabo, Hanning, Rema. Or old DDR/GDR machines.

Some more pics:
Back to the machine corner:

Flott TB 10 german made drill press from 1987. Bought it used in 2009 from a tool store for €238.-. Even came with a brand new 13mm Rohm chuck. Machine runs on 3 phase/400 volt. The base is made out of old shelves (gratis):

Bosch GSM 200D bench grinder made and bought in 2008 for €187,35. Made in Bulgaria. 200mm. 400 volt. The base was made out of scrap material:

28941293vb.jpg
28941313sf.jpg

Femi NG 120 band saw. Made in Italy. Bought it used at a flea market for €80.-. 230 volt. 1300 Watt. Capacity 120mm. Base is from Elektra Beckum (for miter saw):

Grit belt sander. Made in Denmark. 3 KW 400 volt. For 2000x150mm belts. Bought it in 2008 at a used machinery dealer for a mere €220.-. Built the stand, lid and "table" from scratch:

Wow, It's like looking at Jack Olsen's twelve gauge garage, German style with all of that green!

Nice place.

I suspect my color has some history that I probably saw, at some point, but didn't register enough to think about consciously when I picked my own paint.

Great place, Monte.

yeah you´re right ! Same taste in color it seems :) He has a nicer car though ;)

It´s a typical color of older machinery and equipment. It´s called "Reseda Green" (RAL color code 6011)

I noticed that is one giant vise you have there too.
I took some close up pics... :)
Great place, Monte.
Thanks ! I like your garage too ! Nice color ! ;) (and car of course :))

I'm not a fan of green, but in an industrial setting, green and gray seem the most suitable colors.
I think I read somewhere that those two colors were chosen because they cause less eye fatigue than other colors.

Green is a bit rare nowadays. Everything seems to be painted in light grey nowadays like these drill presses, machining centres and blast cabinets for example. The green paint for machinery was actually a DIN norm i found out. So machines had to be painted in reseda green since 1927 until the norm was revoked.

Since i had to somehow attach the cable and air hose reels to my new lift i had to come up with an idea since i didn´t really want to drill any holes in the columns of the lift and there is also the motor and cables in the way.

So i made some brackets from 5mm flat steel:
28959882zw.jpg

setting up for welding:
28959884lg.jpg

cut slightly into the brackets and bend them to maintain the alignment and to get a sharp radius:
28959887mt.jpg

after welding, sand blasting, primer and paint:
28959888dg.jpg
28959898es.jpg

mounted:
28959894ci.jpg
28959892ko.jpg
28959890be.jpg

tools used: MIG welder, band saw, belt sander, angle grinder, drill press, taps, measuring tools, clamps, cordless drill, paint brush.
cost: almost zero :) (a day of time :))

I have the same oil can and it loses oil from day one. Mine is Hazet, but the manufacturer is another German company.
I have to keep it in a tin jug and I clean it up with a rag and brake cleaner before every usage.
@Monte: Nice work!

Great Pictures

I Like Seeing The Way People Use There Work Space
Especially in Other Countries
Are There Any Threads That Are dedicated To Work Spaces
One of the good aspects of GJ...people from all over the world meet here....
I didn´t see anything specific, but if you look through the garage gallery thread you can see many inspirations...
I Love the Oil Can On The Drill Press And Your Vises
We Don't See Those Types Over Here
a oil can pic for you :) Made by "Pressol" and "Reilang".

There is always a bit oil on top where the pump mechanism is...but at least it´s well oiled ;) :) The manufacturer is Pressol.

That wouldn't be a problem.
Mine is dripping all over, so that's a bit frustrating.
I can't complain for its functionality - it's really great.

This is the culprit:

I love that Flott drill press. I've looked into buying one new in the US. They aren't cheap. I think I started a thread here. I don't know if they're made in Germany still. I didn't have much luck with finding a used one here in the states. I do have a Harberle cut-off saw which sees daily action. It's a great machine.

And the blue worker's jacket. I've picked up a few like that at the department store in France when I go. Useful pockets. And durable.

Love the AC Hydraulics stuff.

I see you have a small file cabinet next to the press.
Is it from Ikea?

Everything in the workshop is beyond cool.
The vises, the drill press, the cool industrial belt grinder.

I should have, but at the time I bought it I had a lot of things on my plate so I failed to do it in time.
Maybe it can be sealed so it don´t leak anymore ? (never really looked how these things work...)
Both jacks are very nice btw!
Thanks ;)

Love the AC Hydraulics stuff.
If it doesn´t has to be a Flott drill press... I think "Alzmetall" drill presses are easier to find in the US (currently on ebay.com). You can also look for "Ixion" and "Maxion" drill presses. The Flott website says "Made in Germany since 1854"...Häberle is very nice but i´m too greedy :) (maybe one day in the future....). The AC stuff is definately recommendable ;)
I see you have a small file cabinet next to the press.

hahaha yes you´re right !!! :D I found it in the trash so i took it :) It was red...The quality is not that great since it has no drawer slides....the metal is also very thin....but for free its ok :D And in green it also now looks professional :D
Everything in the workshop is beyond cool.
The vises, the drill press, the cool industrial belt grinder.
Thanks ! In a while your shop will look like you want too ! You´re still young :)
I love the vises! Having the movable jaw on the back makes a lot of sense. I've not seen that before (sheltered life).
Thank you for posting!
Thats the common style for cast vises. from here. The forged vises open to the front.
Nice shop

Yeah i own a couple C+F and also Street-Magazine magazines :) But since the internet i didn´t buy much :( Most of the old car scene is concentrated in the south it seems (Bavaria etc.). But if you look on the streets most people seem to drive cars which are brand new or like 3 to 5 years old...And classic cars (if you see them...) are mostly german....Käfer, W123 Benz, Golf 1, W126, /8, 190 Benz....etc... :( 10km would be nice but then we would talk about something commercial with about 5.-€ + tax per square meter + electricity....
now i pay €235.- for about 80 m²...(electricity incl.)...
Your BGU grinder looks very nice ! Surprisingly you mostly find products from Grit or Scantool from Denmark over here (or rebadged scantool). But the BGU should get the job done too ! And it has the right color :)
