Blast cabinet questions

Hi everyone,

I picked up a used harbor freight 40lb blast cabinet, and have started playing around with it. I have some new coal slag media in the bottom, and am using the original gun that came with the cabinet. Hooked up to my 20gal 4hp compressor until i get my electrical redone so i can hook up the 80gal :) psi at the compressor is set to 90psi. No air dryer in the line yet, but plans for one.

The problem I'm having is that when i press the trigger, i get a little abrasive and then just air for as long as the trigger is held. As i release the trigger, the media kind of spews slowly out of the nozzle as the airflow tapers off. If i pulse the trigger, i can make the abrasive flow more, bit not exactly "well". The problem happens even on the first trigger press after the compressor refills, so i don't think it's necessarily related to the undersized compressor.

Any ideas what's going on here? Any suggestions for improvement are much appreciated!

Best regards,

Lee

If it's used, any part of the gun may be worn out causing those symptoms. And I'm not familiar with coal slag but would get aluminum oxide, glass beads or a mix of those two for general blasting.

I noticed that when i opened the cabinet, i hear air leaking from the bottom of the gun. I checked where the hose attaches, and no leaks there. The leak seems to be coming from the open housing at the **** of the gun's handle. I'm guessing that's not supposed to leak like that? In which case, I'll need to order a replacement gun.

The coal slag is also known as "black diamond" or "Black Beauty". It's a pretty common blasting medium.

Thanks for the help so far

Does anyone else use the standard/original gun on this cabinet, and can comment on whether the continuous leak is normal? I understand the gun is not very good, but I'd like to figure out if it has an additional problem on top of general crustiness.

Thanks!

I have the original gun on my H.F. blast cabinet. NO, it does not continuously leak.
The problem I just encountered with mine is that the trigger is stuck in the on position. I may just replace the whole gun soon.

Ya its the gun, I bought a cheap campbell hausfield kit at a garage sale for $5 unopened and tried it and it works 20 times better and its not even a good gun.

Years back when I worked in a tool and die shop, our blast cabinet would, on occasion, not spit out any media. My solution was to put the nozzle directly onto the left gloved hand, and pulse the foot pedal. Doing so "backwashed" air into the media funnel, and allowed it to flow much better. This was an older style cabinet though, not sure if it will work on the HF model

Sometimes jiggling the uptake tube into the media helps. I dunno - mine seems to work then just blow air, then work some more. I have a similar setup with a CH gun and HF cabinet and black diamond media.
