ALL: i'll start by saying i think just meeting members all around the USA and the world would be a good thing, but to be able to pass on good old tools and machines while they make a trek from the member owning it to the member receiving it would be a blast.

i'll try to keep a few posts open for pending deals going from one member to another.

i'll also try to keep a post open for deals that are ready to move and just needing some help.

i can't tell you how many times i've driven half a 2 to 10 hour trip with an empty or half filled HONDA PILOT or TRAILER and would be happy to meet up with another member for a few minutes near the highway or a good meeting spot to grab a bite to eat or gas and pick up something cool on its way to another member.

ANYBODY WANT TO HELP WITH THE GJ MULE TRAIN??

post up where you are headed and how much room you might have for an item and we'll see if we can make something happen where we can get old Vintage tools in the right member's hands.

for all you truck drivers that do this for your living if you might want to do this for free or for a discount feel free to chime in and let us know where you are going and what sort of space you might have.

THIS IS FOR DEALS ALREADY MADE THAT ARE JUST NEEDING SOMETHING MOVED AND THIS IS NOT A CLASSIFIED THREAD OR ONE TO DO THE DEALS ON!!

OK??

Headed from Northern Virginia to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in late July. Small vehicle (GTI) with hatchback and plenty of room available as space to haul small tools, vises, or small boxes. Headed back to VA 4 days later obviously.

Late August from Northern VA to Tuscaloosa again, partial truck bed available to haul either way. I'll be headed back empty (unless I find stuff whilst dropping off the kid!)

Guys have talked about this idea many times on many different threads. Let's see if the concept gets across to more people and has a few success stories.
Thanks for posting!

I like the name Drivesitfar, GJ Mule Train!

I am heading from my house in NW Louisiana near Shreveport to Loyal in central Wisconsin in two weeks and returning about two weeks later. I will have a rental compact car like a Focus but just myself so should be some room. I usually take a roundabout way of getting there and back over several days so I may go through Iowa, through Rochester Minnesota, maybe Memphis Tennessee, who knows?

ALL: it might be a little intense keeping up with all the information i'll need to keep so if anybody wants to volunteer to set up an Excell sheet so i or they or somebody else can keep track of all of it or certain portions i think that will help. any voluteers just let me know or post your willingness and which parts you'd like.:thumbup:

here's to us all finding some stuff we wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford to ship or even buy end up at our shops.

thanks for all the positive posts so far!!

maybe if this takes off like I hope it will maybe it can be the FIRST VINTAGE TOOL THREAD STICKY!!

I could probably host a form and report on my site so we don't have to mess with a spreadsheet...........just a thought.

TWERTSY: if you want to put a form together please do and we'll let the members decide where to use it best. ok?

thanks

ALL: anybody else that wants to work on the forms or format of this to help keep track that would be awesome cause the more minds working on it the better especially to get this started. i have my wife cracking the whip to get a fence built and a deck remodeled among other things or she's talking about taking away my GJ privileges (or something else i might like more if there is such a thing).

cheers

ALL: if any of you are able to even store items like Duckface mentioned he can would you please give me your zip code and maybe an idea of how much space and for how long it can stay there? something like this:

DRIVESITFAR 98166 5x10 space 7 foot tall non-heated indoors (no outdoors yet cause it's still raining)

also as your space get's filled make updates for instance if i'm holding a table saw that is 2x2 now i only have 46 square feet of space left or sort of like this. how does this sound?

i know something can move across the USA in 2-3 days on the ground with the right shipping companies, but i've heard moving stuff across the country via this MULE TRAIN METHOD can take months so stopping points waiting for stuff to get picked up and moved on are important.

also as i mentioned before if there are truckers willing to do this for free or a fee just post up and let us know space and charges in case the interested parties want to take you up on your service.

thanks to all

Let me know where to put this once it gets going, but I have some scheduled stuff this year.

1) I drive from Reedsport, OR to Eugene OR every other Monday on a regular basis (no holidays) this would allow me to service Coos Bay and Florence areas and everywhere in between.

2) I am traveling from Reedsport to Poulsbo WA the end of July. Exact dates are not confirmed. Space will be limited (family trip).

3) I am traveling from Reedsport to Pocatello, ID the end of July/Early August, Space limited (family trip).

4) I'm regularly moving around my portion of Oregon for sports activities etc. for the kids, never hurts to ask.

Fowl: what's your zip code and have you closed on your house yet? also how much space do you want to have available for GJ items to be stored as a drop off and for how long? thanks for volunteering especially on vacation times with the family too.

All: great stuff and keep posting.

NOTE TO GJ MEMBERS: i've been asked to buy stuff for other members in my area and ship to them in the past which i've always been ok if i didn't have to drive across town in traffic and if i had the time. that said i've always had one rule which might work for everybody.

As a lot of you know i buy to use and buy to add to collections so if you are picking in my Craigslist area and want me to pick it up I get first choice if i want to buy it. granted you might have found something i might not have found or maybe a few minutes before i did, but i check regularly for some things like vises, tools, toolboxes and some other stuff. more than likely if i don't NEED IT for myself of to fill in a collection i probably will buy it for you even if i maybe could have bought and flipped it. that said i'd expect the same on the other end if i asked you to go pick up something that i knew was going to cost me shipping it would have to be a decent deal.

on the good side i'm trying to eliminate one of my 20x20 storage units until i build a shop so i'm not buying as much STUFF lately.

ANY RACE CAR TEAMS, DRIVERS going across country and wanting to help let us know. you not only will meet a good GJ member, but you might find a couple good eating places to fill your belly without getting food poisoning.

again this MULE TRAIN IS NOT A PLACE TO ADVERTISE TOOLS FOR SALE AND ONLY GOING TO BE FOR TRANSPORTING THEM AFTER DEALS ARE MADE. OK??

cheers

I can store stuff if needed.

Old hand tools, check (but I can't guarantee they won't get lost in my collection :)
Old tool boxes, check, see last note;
Old tool displays, check, but they WILL get lost in my collection;
Machinery, temporary storage of a week or two (like lathes, mills, etc.)
Cars, temporary storage of a week or two;
Vises, sure, I can store 'em.

See Drive's posted rule on purchase/store activities above. Always willing to help someone out.

My ZIP is 22191.

Salem, Oregon to Portland and back again is my daily route with occasional trips to Eugene and Seattle. I can haul anything that will fit in my 2000 Toyota Camry but have no extra storage space for anything larger than a vise.

zip code is 97467
Closing on the house on Tuesday, no storage until July basically.
After that I will have some storage available, but I'll reserve saying how much until I get in and see how much space my stuff takes.

You guys rock, I don't travel but am located close to the I-10 corridor that runs from TX to FLA along the MS gulf coast (my zip is 39466 but I work in 70458) and can store anything pretty much if need in my secure metal shop for small periods as mentioned above, this is a killer idea and if this works would be awesome for all involved, IMHO. Me and Torqueman2002 have talked about is anyone was doing this one any other occasion when we had a deal before.

DF: sounds like a SNOWBIRD maybe can make a trip from Arizona back up to the PNW as the hot days and nights never get below 100 degrees so we'll see if any GJ members are drivers and not flyers.

my parents had a little condo down there and sold it a few years ago just as i might have used it cause they got tired of the drive and my mom won't fly. once the temps hit 100 degrees in Phoenix for about 7 days straight they'd pack up and head back to Seattle and probably would have driven right by you.

ALL: i'll try to set up the items to move and locations, but i might need some help with this one. also for those items going cross country having a bunch of members in the midwest to store stuff would be great.

anybody going cross country this weekend and want to take something with them just post up and maybe somebody can figure out a deal through PM's and emails.

cheers and hope you all have a great weekend. i'm not sure how much i can help with the moving stuff, but my name isn't DRIVESITFAR just because i can hit a golf ball a long ways.

Drives- I drive truck, cross country. While I can't place anything in the trailer, I can likely move small items in the cab of the truck. We are often on tight schedules, and rarely know too far in advance where we're going, but I can certainly try to help out

AllFast: it might work with enough participation and good will. we'll see. Thanks

EP:
thanks for posting up your approval and your willingness to help even with small items.

ALL: one thing that might help is if members can meet other members just off freeway exits with smaller items to keep them moving down the roads on their vacations or trips.

thanks everybody for the positive responses so far!!

Count me in. Great idea, thanks Drives!

SE Michigan to/from Central NY (Syracuse area), several times a year.
SE Michigan to/from Minneapolis area, starting September 1 or 2 times a year.

Just an idea - on OWWM there is a separate thread 'The Ruckerer's Rodeo'.
A place for requesting help picking up and/or moving machinery not local to you. Likewise, post up if you are able to offer transport space on an up coming trip.
http://owwm.org/viewforum.php?f=29

Members post items like: "Bench Grinder from Elizabethtown PA to Albany NY"

It appears self monitoring and sustaining.

Perhaps GJ could do some thing similar.

Torqueman: thanks for posting and giving your support. i think we're trying to do something similar to OWWM and even though theirs has been ongoing for several years i think GJ can do it better.

we've already got our first request for a toolbox to move from the Grand Canyon (Duckface) to Portland, Or. (Rileysan).

keep posting your ideas, thoughts and requests or traveling agenda and very happy to have DOC BLOCK on board.

cheers and have a great weekend.

ALL: EDDIEK just posted on the big vise thread that he drives up to Washington from Arizona once or twice a year and mentioned he'd be willing to help if anybody needs something moved.

I'm still looking for a good format to post the NEEDS, PARTICIPANTS, and PROGRESS on a specific items journey if anybody wants to take on that task.

any ideas or volunteers?

another option for those of you that travel and might not need to take luggage can you check in a bag full of tools to take it to another state and drop off or have another member pick them up from you at the airport?

or can you check in an empty suitcase and meet a member that has something for you to put in it for your return trip?

how safe are tools in unlocked baggage might be the question??

In 1970 I rode United Airlines back to upstate New York along with my mother to attend my brother's college graduation. For the return trip my brother and I drove his 1929 Model A Tudor sedan home to Oregon via US 20 and US 30. It took seven days.

My carry-on baggage was a soft bag with 47 lbs. of tools (sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.) and no one even looked in the bag or asked why it was so heavy. My how things have changed!

You know Drives, this system has been going on for a while on other forums and was originated on OWWM. The transport is known as "Ruckering" and the storage is known as "Pottering"

Oh, I almost forgot. Count me in for either option. I will post if/when I am doing a road trip. And I have temp warehouse space for most normal shop stuff.

Craptain: and if you haul something in one of your boats it's called SHIPPING!! :D

yep we knew/know it's been ongoing with OWWM, but a lot of us don't belong to that forum and it doesn't seem as active as GJ so thought maybe we try it here and see how or if it will work.

thanks for the proper terms and thanks for throwing your hat in the ring so to speak and offering to help.

are you still taking boats to the UK or are those days in your past?

cheers

I'm game. I'm in 64015 zip. About 5min from I-70. I try to make 3-4 trips a year in a crew cab Silverado to Nebraska and to the broward county / Miami dade county line around Ft. Lauderdale. I will post when we have a trip scheduled. I'm not opposed to pulling a light trailer if need be so up to a 1500lb load shouldn't pose a problem. Also, (provided everything works out for me) we will have a 60' x 110' steel house/shop combo built and move in ready at the beginning of next year. It will have about 2,200sf of heated/cooled shop with 19' ceiling so I should be able to store pretty much whatever for a month or three if a GJ member is in a pinch.

Drives,
As I mentioned, I can set this all up on my site. You would be able to browse "ride offers" to see if anyone is passing by your origin and target destinations, select one, and then contact the "rucker." Same goes for available "potters."

Now, the one catch is that you would have to be logged into my site to do this. The reasons are twofold: first, the forms would get spammed like crazy with no login; second, being logged in when offering/accepting allows the software to capture identities and exchange emails/PMs.

Again, I'm happy to set this all up and I think I could do it in a day or two if the conditions above are acceptable.

This would be the cleanest way to manage this service, especially as it grows in popularity. The thread should be pinned so it doesn't get lost and the participants can then jump on Twertsy's site to get their arrangements in order.

LOL.
The terms came from members names so I don't know if it is "official" but it is kinda cool and outsiders scratch their heads at it.
As for boats, I only ever took one to UK. But brought several from France to ports in US. And naturally I would make it known if I were to repeat either trip. Most of my work now is coastal East coast, Gulf of Mexico, and occasionally Caribbean.

Twertsy: i thought maybe having it here on GJ would make it easier for the members, but I think if you want to set it up on your Tools Archives web site it will give all of us another reason to go to your site which is always improving.

ALL: anybody have any thoughts on this or should we go log on to Twerty's web site to handle the MULE TRAIN and maybe put alerts on here to let us know things are happening?

my vote is to have TWERTSY SET IT UP and if those already involved would like to post their vote and or thoughts please do.

cheers and thank the veterans and guys in blue and red that work hard to keep us and our country safe.

Craptain: if you do another trip or two to the UK it might be fun for you to meet a few guys from across the pond that post on GJ regularly if they are able to get to where you land. and we might get to see some good old English iron while they get some good old US made stuff.

cheers and floating around the Caribbean and getting paid for it doesn't sound too bad unless there really are PIRATES. are there any now or waters you need to stay away from cause of other reasons like military or Bermuda Triangle?

I second the motion to let twertsy host it if he wants. With just a link up in the first post that takes you right to the page.

This sounds good. Hopefully the admins will sticky this thread but make it only viewable by GJ members who are logged in.
