Tool Rolls for S-K Wrenches

So about 20 years ago I bought a new set of S-K Superchrome, long-pattern wrenches. 5/16ths to 3/4 I'm thinking. They came in a canvas and plastic tool roll. That set was stolen by the Mex plumbers on a jobsite I was working on. Bummer.

But I kept my eyes open on ebay and found a replacement set of long-pattern S-K's for $55. This set was 1/4" to 3/4". Then I saw a few S-K Superchrome orphans--picked up a 13/16", 7/8", 15/16" and 1"

But I needed a tool roll, and preferably two tool rolls, since I'd be using the bigger S-K's infrequently. I keep these wrench sets behind the seat of my truck, and so tool rolls are the best way to store them. I looked high and low... far and wide, but didn't find anything that I liked.

Then I decided to ask several wimmen I knew if they'd sew me a couple of tool rolls. But none of the wimmen I know have sewing machines!! What is the world coming to?

Long story cut short I saw a Singer Promise II sewing machine at a garage sale for $15. Dragged it home, took it apart and lubed all the internals. Got it working and made these. I put in some extra spaces just in case:

1/4" to 3/4" set:

13/16" to 1" set:

Both rolled up. The ties are a shoe lace cut in two and sewed to the edge of each roll:

Sorry. I spent all afternoon figuring out how to cut the material so as to make it fold right and leave enough for the pouches, and then sew everything. I ain't doing it again for nobody!

Here are two more rolls I made back in the 1990's. The different colored edge tape is so I can easily tell which roll is which when I grab one.

One is for a Superchrome S-K Metric set the other for a not-Superchrome S-K fractional box end set.

Metric set is 6mm through 19mm with an extra 10mm.

Box end set. When I ordered these from S-K, I thought I was getting Superchrome, but they were not. I don't know what quality the finish is called, but it's not the SC. 12-points are 3/8" through 1", and the 6-points are 3/8" through 11/16ths.

Nice job. What material did you use? Is that binding around the edges folded over strips of cloth or "official" sewing binding? Your post has motivated me to make a couple to replace old ones that are falling apart.

Hell, it's the real deal! Bias tape I think it's called. Anyway it's woven on a bias to the length so it doesn't come unraveled. Pretty cheap at the fabric store, although every woman in there stared hard at me while I was in there picking out what I needed.

The first set--the brown ones--are canvas while the second set is denim.

By the way, when my original S-K tool roll was stolen by the plumbers--they were the only ones going in and out of the garage where I had my tools set up that day--they left behind this Stanley hack saw. Pretty neat, but not nearly worth as much as the S-K set.

I had to go to the fabric store a while back. I needed a piece of vinyl for my sons ATC70 seat. It was senior day.....I felt like the turd in the punch bowl and holy cow do those old ladys take their sweet time getting there fabric cut.

Nice work! A brilliant solution i say.

i made some this winter, got pretty good at it. I made about 6 like this for 20$ cdn of materials, plus it was fun! I also fixed my jeans. I made some out of old carharts as well. I am going to try again with some elastic material to hold sockets.

Wow bcexplorer. You are a heck of a lot better sewer, uhhh, seam-ster than I am. The white ones are beautiful and I see you used that fancy zig-zag stitch. Awesome.

If you want a canvas tool roll and do not want to sew your own, check with GJ member Harry J. Epstein Tools. http://www.harryepstein.com They found a lady in Kansas City that sews canvas tool rolls. They sell a 7-pocket tool roll for $13. I believe they also have a manufacturer for leather tool rolls.

Too bad SK does not offer quality tool rolls. When you buy a quality set of wrenches that will likely last a lifetime it would be nice to have a quality tool roll to store them in.

Lol thanks the pictures probably make it look better than it is.

They are definetly the way to go for transporting tools in vehicles.

By the way sorry about the loss of your wrenches.

You could have used new shoe laces instead of the old worn out ones from your tennies.

Nice tho. I know how hard it is to throw away those old laces.
