This is a story that has a few questions questions that I am having some problems with. First off many thanks to GJ member bczygan for his work on finding the Grave and the 1920 Census; but questions arise because on the Grave it lists the DOB for George as born in 1858 and date of death in 1925.

Then in the 1920 Census it lists his birth year (estimated) as 1862 So that brings me to ask did someone guess that date or did whoever they ask in the Family get it wrong ; I take it Census workers make mistakes ?

His wife was Eliza G. Wood , and two sons George A. Wood (also other patents), and Edson Wood. (be sure and see the links). Interesting thing in that George's last patent was in 1925 (also year of death).

Please note that my Hurwood screwdriver does not have any patent numbers but a very long google search was in order; patented on July 19th, 1904 No. Model Number.

I could not find any information about the George E. Wood Company but interestingly I found the Hurwood Manufacturing Co.

This is the part that gets a little tricky I do not think that Mr. Wood owned the Hurwood Co. through his own Company ? I have asked GJ member twertsy to look into this for me, maybe he can find some more information.

Story update GJ member twertsy found the following owner it was a Mr. John A. Hurley; mystery solved on that question.

On one very old patent from Mr. Wood he is listed also as the maker, I am guessing that was his company ; yet the other patents list the manufacture as the Hurwood Co.

I found the following Davistown web-site (please be sure and see the links).

The Stanley Co. was in a buying mood and new companies were annexed...

"In the early years of this century the march of progress continued.,In 1904 the George E. Wood Company, of Plantsville, Conn. manufactures of Hurwood screwdrivers was bought. The business was enlarged under the Stanley leadership and Stanley Hurwood screw drivers became the biggest selling quality drivers in the World".

Now some background about the Hurwood Co. It seems the Hurwood Manufacturing Co. was the outgrowth of the Acme Mfg Co. and the company was organized under the laws of Connecticut, March 28th, 1903. (please be sure and see the many links and the pictures of the building.

I will need several more posts for all the many links and pictures and just one more old vintage name for you to keep your eyes open for in your many hunts.

Resurrecting this old thread as I got my first Stanley Hurley (that i"m aware of) last Sat:

I just completed cleaning up the wood handled drivers I got last Sat. and ID'd all but one:

from the top:
The one unmarked driver
Plvmb (ferrule is in the Evaporust and USC)
Millers fall's
Winchester (ferrule sure looks like Stanley...)
Stanley No.20
Stanley No.20 (different handled style)
Stanley Hurwood, (with part of a patent date of Apr. 2. and then its obliterated - on the shank; which is also odd... Stanley's are usually on the ferrule. this is likely Patent Number 671,039, Apr. 02, 1901, Screw Driver for a steel shank through the handle so it can be hit with a hammer and not break the handle; and assigned to Stanley Rule & Level Co.

Also scraped this tidbit up: "In the early years of this (last) century the march of progress continued.,In 1904 the George E. Wood Company, of Plantsville, Conn. manufactures of Hurwood screwdrivers was bought. The business was enlarged under the Stanley leadership and Stanley Hurwood screw drivers became the biggest selling quality drivers in the World"

That one, the Winchester, and the Plvmb PH #2 are the winners here, and the little MF gets a nod too:

I need to properly catalog my wood handled drivers... (and all my drivers for that matter)

Just stumbled on this post looking up Stanley Hurwood. Check out this oddball I found in a box today.
IMG_3275.jpegIMG_3273.jpegIMG_3277.jpeg

It’s a slot head screwdriver, 5 1/4” long. The shaft is 3/32. No other ID other than what is shown.
Maybe a watchmakers? Any idea of age?

Peter etc.
