Drop Top Shop- 22 x 28 Rehab

Hi All,

Recently moved into a new place with an attached 22 x 28 garage. Funny because I always said I would never own a home with an attached garage. All is not lost though, my new place has enough property to build a detached garage out back. With 2 boys in college, it will be about 5 years before I can break ground on that. So without further ado, lets get everyone up to speed.

Here is what it looked like right before we bought the house.

Job 1 for me was to update the electric service panel. The original panel was packed and just too much of a mess for me to tolerate. So I had a new large panel installed. Feel much better now.

Nice cabinets, they look like they came out of a laboratory. The Cadillac looks good, too.

Yes the cabinets came from a Laboratory a few years ago. A member here on GJ spread the word about them being for sale and I grabbed a bunch.

So I had to fix this butcher job. The rafters run the length of the garage and are sistered in the middle to make up the length. Someone installed the pull down stairs by simply cutting through two of the rafters and that was it! Sure enough the ceiling was sagging in this area. It was a good 4+ inch drop. So the fix was to jack it up from the underside and then bolt up studs to support the rafters to the roof joist. Problem solved

Once the ceiling was secure. It was time to build an upper storage cabinet on the right side. Then I was able to get some paint on the walls.

The paint scheme looks great! I love the casement windows. Our house used to have steel casement windows but we had to go to double hung or sliders when we replaced them. I'm going to file the idea of using casements in my garage and barn shop when we finally move.

Next up was to wire and pipe my Quincy 2 stage compressor. I used a rapid air kit to plumb the air lines. Sure did make quick work of it. The kit allows for 2 service ports. I wanted to run three service ports so I had to buy some extra quick connects.

Does anyone collect Coke bottles? These and many more will be going on display above the cabinets. Nothing newer than 1994 in this collection. Each one represents a different bottling plant.

These cabinets were hanging in the garage when we bought the place. I don't have a use for them but they will be saved for my son's garage.

This is genious! Looking up the kits they are reasonably priced. I would assume the 1/2" air line kit will work fine for most garage air compressors?

I have had people tell me that the 1/2" kit is 1/2" OD not ID. Keep that in mind.

Correct the ID of the 1/2 kit is 3/8". Works just fine.

Getting there. Hung my NY plate collection up. 102 consecutive years on the wall. Just need to figure out what I wanna do with the floor. Leaning towards racedeck.

Thoughts?

I love the colors. My opinion is the wall colors make it look vintage, which I really like. I really like the look of Racedeck, but my opinion is Racedeck would look too modern for your garage. I think another more vintage looking option would look better with what you have going already. Wood floors would look awesome, or cleaning your concrete with clear epoxy might be a good option. Something like this.

Just my opinion.

Checkout Swisstrax flooring tiles. They have some cool vintage Mocha java color tiles that would look great in your shop

I looked into the wood pattern tiles. Way too expensive at over $7 per sq ft. Ordered racedeck in tan and graphite. Thanks all for the ideas. Stay tuned....

Been a while but got a few more things done over the winter. Removed the 2 old 8' florescent lights and installed six 4' LED lights. Also setup my media center.

Almost done with my hi track conversion on the garage doors. Only thing left is the torsion spring conversion. Just waiting on some parts. Also carried the paint job onto the inside of the garage doors. Came out nice if I do say so myself.
