How about listing your hometown or state in your profile?

I'm often reading posts where someone will say something like "around here we have 12' of frost in the ground" or "our local building codes allow you to raise sheep in your front yard"... or some such "stuff".

I guess I'd like to know where "around here" is... obviously you wouldn't put you home address on your profile but a city or state or region of a state (ex. "SoCal" or "West Texas") would be nice.

I don't believe the bad guys can track you down if you live in "NYC"... and don't expect me to drive over to your place to borrow a 9/16' wrench (although I DID need an 8mm flex-head socket yesterday!)...

C'mon... come clean... let us know where you live!

I have no problem with listing where I live. I am sure it allows more reasoned responses to requests. I for one would offer different advice to someone living in the Matanuska Valley than to another located in Southern California.

I usually look at the location under your name. Helps me to work out where you guys are and I think mine probably helps you understand some of my spelling and comments.

This has been an ongoing battle over the years that gets brought up every six months or so when the newer members without a location begins to add up.It helps even if you just narrow it down to a state or province.Just lets us get a better feel for the board. You never know who you may be living down the street from.

I've mentioned it in the past, I don't see why people don't have atleast a state mentioned.

It's very annoying when someone with no info is asking for advice about code or is mentioning the local Sears/Lowes/Menards.....whatever is having a sale and only has so many "blank" item left. Codes vary by region and some sales/products are regional too!

I hate some of the codes or nicknames people use for thier location too, not everyone knows them.

You people would be surprised how easy it is to track somebody down with a little internet info, and a city, or even state.

I've done it myself to get money I was owed. Within 2 days, I had the guy crapping his pants, and somebody putting a note on his door.

So, I perfectly understand if somebody doesn't want to give their info.

Mine did have a location(I thought). Could it have disappeared during an
upgrade or something? I just put it back on.

I also agree that a general location is a good thing... do not need names or specific contact information.... i am currently in north central iowa... have been here for 3 years, before that SE Iowa... the differences in terrain, weather patterns, frost depths, etc are very different and we are within 150-200 miles... so I know how much variations we have... also have been to oregon and south texas.... conditions in all regions vary to much...

Another site that I frequent requires a general location to maintain membership. Let's face the fact that there are people from all over the world that access this site with differences in dialect, word and spelling use. It helps tremendously when helping someone with a problem or purchasing in the classifieds to know if it is even remotely helpfull to inquire furthure or offer assistance. There have been a number of time when I would or did offer assistance to someone on this board only to find out that there location didn't make it possible or if listed I was able to not bother offering help.

I see it as being pushy, (which I do not like) if you want to post your location great, if not, that is just fine too. If it is really that big a deal, PM the guy and ask his location. A few rules are great, but just like governments and laws, it always begins with a few, then before you know it, you have the United States today!!!

I could not have said it better. Although it is helpful to have a rough idea of where a member resides, that information should NEVER be required.

I'm kinda at a loss as to how it is pushy? What is 'pushy' about showing your apx location? It's not a rule....you don't have to show your location.....but don't expect an accurate answer to any questions you have that might be affected by the location you are in.

It's kinda like going to the auto supply and asking for a new starter...and not telling the guy what kind of car it's for.

Here in Texas if I know your county and a hint of your name, I can probably give you a...
-- a map to your house w/ an aerial photo at 1m resolution (e.g. whether you left your trash can out at the curb the day the photo was taken)
-- aerial photos of your property in 1995, 1997, 2004, 2006 and 2008 (just in case you made a few changes)
-- your appraised property value for the last few years
-- whether or not you (or the bank/morgage company) actually OWN the property
-- the size of your house and any outbuildings (e.g. your man cave)
-- whether you paid your taxes on time over the last few years

BTW that is just using public property tax records, Google Earth
and free aerial photos provided by the state of Texas.

Funf Dreisig

P.S. I gladly provide location info in posts (when appropriate) but NEVER in a profile.

I guess I have never had a question where my location was that pertinent. I know some sites say you must post that to be a member here. I did it, but I did not like it. My opinion it's pushy for no real good reason. Besides, I could tell ya I lived in Alabama instead of Kansas and no one would be any wiser. I don't relate it to buying parts for a car either, you must supply the info to get the correct part in that instance, not at all the same to me.

Maybe someone else would like to do the honors for those in California (and any other state but Texas) who don't believe what can be turned up via the internet.

FWIW I know my way around the Texas property tax sites and where to find historic aerial photos, etc. -- largely to document changes on my own property over time. I have no interest in learning about these types of sites for other States.

Bump!

Thought I would bring this subject forward again. I have been seeing a lot of posts lately where members ask questions that require location to give intellegent answers but have either no location shown or some facetious remark that tells nothing. It is annoying when someone asks how much insulation they need, or how deep to put a footing or what the local municipality requires of them without letting anyone know where in the country (or the world) they live. If you are afraid of someone tracking you down, just put the general location or country. It helps us help you.:D

I don't bother to even venture a guess if someone is not willing to give up enough details. On the other hand some people don't realize that a world exists beyond a 20 mile radius of their place.

True, if you only list Springfield as your home town, that is useless since there is one in nearly every state!

If people don't want to include their location in their signature that's fine, but they do need to say where they are when it comes to asking questions that are location dependent (or, when making statements like "around here, we do it this way....")

edit: On the other hand, even when someone asks a question and says where they are located, there will be a dozen replies based on how things are done somewhere else. I've never figured that out either.

I've asked different ones to put in their state at least. It saves so much time with answering questions like "how deep does my footer have to be?"

It's simple people, when you fill out your profile, just put in the name of your State. And although, things like frost lines vary even in one state from border to border, it still gets an answer better than nothing. A huge difference between dry and hot Nevada vs. our ****** Ohio weather.
