Here is my tire storage system (one built for each car). I took the inspiration from the steel racks that are sold at Canadian Tire and other places, plus a few ideas I saw online. Then I incorporated a shelf for storage of misc items and drew up some quick plans (which are somewhere...). I had some extra ply kicking around for the shelves and just had to buy some 2x4's and some 3" lag screws.
The width of the rack is sized for my tires (for a Civic) but was planned to account for a larger tire used on a mini-van. As well, the shelf height was planned to allow the hood of a mini-van to fit underneath (garage is not deep - only 18', and there's not much left after the van is pulled inside).
The main rack supports are notched into the vertical members for strength and diagonal bracing added for additional support. All fasteners used for the tire supporting framework were 3" lag screws. Some of the screws protruded once installed - I just cut the points off and filed the stubs flush with the wood.
The shelf frame is assembled with 3" wood screws as is the 2x3 diagonal that keeps the tires upright. The plywood shelf itself is simply tacked down with some small finishing nails.
The tire support rails were ripped at an angle before installation. I will need to re-position the inner rail for the van's tires as they were originally positioned for tires for a Focus. Overall they work well and use up space that would otherwise remain unused (and clear up space in my shop!).
Attaching to the wall is easier if you tack on a couple of 1" blocks to the top of the uprights. This lets you simply hang them in place before securing to the cross members which were previously attached to wall studs, again with 3" lag screws.
