This is my garage build, nothing spectacular, just a normal attached double car garage 20'x22' with 10'9" ceiling. I wouldn't call it my dream garage but this is as close to it as I'll get until I can someday build a decent sized detached.

First the clean slate, looking back, I should have done the floors right after moving in, but those were hectic times with lots to do.

Shortly after moving in, stuff already starting to pile up:

I had found some free used kitchen cabinets and bought a tool cart for my then small set of tools, this would have to do as I eyed buying set of metal cabinets one day:

I tried to keep things organized:

Next up was a 2-post lift, here it is before it was loaded onto a ship:

Being picked up:

Lift Install:

It is a low ceiling, no base-plate lift, similar concept to a maxjax but with higher lift and higher capacity and more safety locks.

Wasted no time, first project on the lift was doing the rod bearings on my m3:

Installing the lift required a 8500 side mounted opener and high lift conversion to the tracks. I tried the DIY approach to modifying the tracks, it's not perfect but it works. If I did it again, i'd go with the correct high-lift conversion with raising the drums/springs and adding the vertical section to the tracks:

As my tool collection started to grow, I needed more room. I originally wanted a full set of metal cabinets but came across a great deal on these Husky boxes and reconfigured the wood cabinets I had:

Much more room for my tools:

Up next were the floors, I originally wanted to do epoxy but I had too much stuff in my garage and there was no way I could store everything in the house, so I decided to go with Swisstrax:

M3 Approves:

That brings us up to date for now.
My future plans are to install a mini-split AC and then perhaps wall mount the controls/pump for the lift and clean up the hoses/wires.

That floor looks great.

I picked up one of those Husky boxes second hand for $50.
Not terrible, a little flimsy, but they get the job done. Had to replace the slides for the top and bottom right drawers (another $50).

Thanks for the weekend mechanic I think they are great for the price, definitely not top notch quality and lack some features and extras, an equivalent snap-on would probably be $5k+. On sale they were $198 ea new. I should have bought a third.

Great job with the garage man. Looks sweet

Thanks Johnny!

Been looking for one of these for awhile, still can't get a hold of one!

Yea, you pretty much have to import one from China which is a hassle and if you aren't close to a shipping port, getting it delivered would probably be outrageously priced. At that point you'd have to weight the pros and cons of just getting a maxjax.

Did another rod bearing job, first big job since the floors went in.

Gotta say, I love the floors even more now, cleanup was super easy, and small drips/spills didn't create a big mess like the concrete usually does (walking/rolling over it spreads it out). But I did take extra care using a tray and cardboard to catch most of the mess.

Quick vacuum and some spot wipes on the floors and you couldn't tell I did anything. Normally I'd have to sweep, pressure wash and scrub the floors after a job like this.

Yes, automatic internal safety locks, automatically unlocking also when going down. No need to walk to each column to disengage.

First safety lock is fairly high though. Around 40" I think, can't remember exactly.

I like how clean the work bench area is. No clutter.

Thanks! It's always a struggle but yes I try my best to keep the clutter away, considering I do work and all the tools around in there I think I'm doing okay, but definitely ain't spotless. Perhaps a few tall cabinets on the side and a getting rid of the clutter on top of wall cabinets will clean things up even more.

Changed up my Security Cam for the Garage, the old one had a very narrow FOV, this one is much wider. I mounted it up high on the ceiling.

It's a fairly cheap Xiaomi Mi Wifi Cam with a microSD card for storage. Easy setup, should do fine until I decide to spend the time to wire up a full NVR system.

Nice garage! nice cars too. Do I see a Benz in place of what looked like an all BMW garage in the last picture?

Thanks, right you are. I got rid of my 3rd car, the Z3 Coupe and my wife said it was time for her to have a toy. So we picked up an SLK for her. Living up north for all our lives we never cared for a convertible but now that we live in South FL we figured we should enjoy one for a while.

Very nice project! Where did you find the tool/socket organizers?

Thanks! The socket organizers are from Harbor Freight actually. They do the job.

I filled in a few empty spaces in my socket organizer, I got tired of looking at the empty spaces, lol. Bought a set of gearwrench 3/8 deep sockets, from 6mm-19mm, previously I only had 10-15mm 3/8 deeps and it was cheaper to buy a new set than to buy them individually. Now I'm only missing a 20mm 3/8 deep to fill up that tray.

I got the Gear Wrench set mainly for the extra grip area on the base of the sockets:

Also need a few deep 1/2 inch sockets, 20,23,25,27mm.

nice garage! ive been a mechanic my whole life and I don't think ive ever used a 20mm lol

Thanks, lol yea it's probably not something that gets used often. I just wanted to fill the empty space.

Very nice!

Thanks!

Amazing hot box with instrument!:rocker:
Do you do business in the garage?

Thanks, no business. But I do help friends and family with small repairs. I've also become somewhat of a rod bearing specialist for E9x M3s, doing 6 including my own so far this year.

Nice use of your space. Garage looks great! Very jealous of your lift and flooring. Keep up the good work.

That's a sweet setup. Nice work, and yeah... way cleaner than any space I've ever worked haha.

How big is your garage, if you don't mind me asking?

"I just wanted to fill the empty space. "

I went through a very similar exercise last year. I will (however) advise that I've used a 20mm 6-point on the P-car within the last 12 months.

What's with the E9x rod-bearings? Is this a common failure point like the early water pumping 911 IMS bearings?

About 20x22

Yea similar, basically if they aren't addressed you are taking a chance that your motor might spin a bearing and shoot a rod out of the block, then you are out 10-15k for a motor replacement, or you do them and consider it a 2-3k maintenance item every 100k

Long over due update, last year I installed a mini split finally.

I picked up an Everwell 1 ton, 220v unit in Miami for super cheap. It is basically a Mr.Cool style unit for $450. Includes the lineset and comes pre-charged.
image.jpg

This was the 2.5" hole I needed to drill, I decided to make the hole lower instead of directly behind the inside unit because I wanted the outside wall to look cleaner, I didn't care about the lines being on the inside wall. Added a 15A 220V breaker, ran some lines in PVC conduit and mounted the disconnect outside and it was all fairly easy.

After not having any luck calling an AC tech to evacuate the system, I bought a gauge set and pump from amazon and did it myself.

In the south florida heat, it has been a god send, I can actually get alot more done.

PS: Just because someone commented earlier, my garage is back to being all BMW, kicked the SLK out and got another M3.
