Over the better part of this year, we have been attempting to wall in the existing carport on our mid century home. after 8 months, we finally got the permiting to allow construction to go forward. up to this point I have been chronicling this is the intro thread here: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=359565

I was asked to start a new thread here as construction continues.

Here are some, but not all, of the pics from this build:

Hung some lights today.

each fixture is rocking 4 T8 LED bulbs, pushing out a lot of lumens and not so much heat. It is bright where I need it.

Nice build, I grew up in Hippyville and I'd do some extended visits but not sure I'd live there again.

I grew up in Douglas County and after many years abroad, came back here for school. after dealing with the city, amongst other things, we are probably going elsewhere after I graduate.

high windows for natural light and security. style follows the function.

the back side will get shelving, a place to hang my yard tools and a compressor.

Trim in up on the front and ready to accept a garage door.

Property line side is 99% and looks great in my opinion.

Hardy board on the back side is mostly up and will be a great spot to hang my garden tools. This has been a productive week.

IMHO, I really like the overhang on the front. Should help keep the rain off the door. How many feet does that stick out.

5'6". this was actually a bone of contention with the city as the corner is 10' 1/8" from the corner of the neighbors roof. They said it was too close, the code says 10'. Close, but still legal.

Expecting the windows installed this week as well as all the siding up. security lights were located and the remainder of the eceltrical should be sorted out.

it will be at least another week for the door.

Garage Door is due in next week, and the Electrical after thanksgiving.

Looks like we will be wrapping this up before christmas.

Looking good! I was wondering if the spacers in the windows were going to be visible when they were installed.

One question: do you know the name of the bush on the left side of the photo of the door? These plants were at most of the mid-century modern houses when I was growing up in N. Calif. and I've been trying to find them here in Colorado.

It's a Pacific Rhododendron. (Rhododendron macrophyllum) You are right, they were a very popular shrub used in the 50's and 60's NW suburbia. they go with the Myrobian Plum 'Thundercloud'.

They are a hardy shrub at this altitude and good to zone 6, which i am pretty sure they are not suitable for either the altitude or cold of Colorado. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Looking great! Gotta admit though, my heart sank when I saw the primer pics  I assumed you were going to keep the wood aesthetic and just stain or seal.

Seconded, the wood paneling looked awesome. I was hoping to see what stain was going to be used to maintain the look.

I wish we could have simply sealed it and been done, however a previous owner painted the house, which is clad in the same cedar. we looked into stripping the house and learned that for the expense, it would not be worth the effort, since one can never get all the paint removed.

It was a bitter pill to swallow, but in the end the garage and the house need to remain in context with one another, and I believe at the end of the day this was the way to go.

I am supposed to be getting a garage door this week.

The last of the windows and trim were installed. Next up, sealing the gaps between the wall and brick columns and running wire.
