I picked up this DC Voltage Tester for a decent price. I don't know much about it? I'm going to restore it at some point and would love to know the history on it? I think it has to be from the late 20's early 30's?

At first I thought maybe it was automotive related, but I'm thinking differently now, because of the way the gauges are wired and the clamps on it.

When the clamps are fully closed the gap is 3 1/2" across...too far apart for battery posts. All the rubber coating on the clamp cabling has rotted off, also the clamp cables are pretty short in length.

The gauges only go up to 2.5 volts, so that pretty much rules out auto's, because they were 6 volts at the time this thing was made.

There is a clip on the front that looked like it held a round company badge or ID plate? (of course its missing). But other then that there are no names or numbers on it anywhere that would lead to a clue on what it was used for?

Here is a list of questions that have me scratching my head :headscrat

1. What's the age of this tester?
2. What was it used on for testing?
3. Why are there three gauges on it? Each clamp is wired to its own individual gauge and then both of the clamps are also wired to the center gauge.
4. What is the old style push button starter switch on it used for? And also there is a "15 second test" tag on it below the starter button.

Wonder if it was used in a industrial setting or in a electrical plant :headscrat

A normal single cell in a lead acid battery is ~2.2 vdc fully charged. So having 2.5vdc gauges is expected. I also suspect that if you trace out the wiring you will find that one or two of the gauges are wired so that when the button is pushed the voltage is measured across the resistance and that could be converted to amperage. It also looks like there are two resistance coils in there.

All I can add is I'm gonna guess whatever batteries it tested were 6VDC, (3) 2VDC cells...

What ever it is it should look pretty sharp painted a automotive gas co. theme like Polly or Signal. Get some NOS wire and rewire the clamps after polishing up that brass.
