Went with a mono pour which is common for the area. Went down to 30” and lots of stone and wheelbarrows! Lots of compacting in several steps. Bar in the footing and mesh on the slab 5” thick

The only outside help i had to bring in was a local cement guy on the day of the pour, money well spent considering the money i saved by doing all the prep work first.

Luckily we checked the front and found there was no footing across the front of garage probably to save money when the house was built. So instead of cutting out old cement we decided to go about 2.5 feet out the front and side walls and pour a new one that was pinned to existing cement

Long day of framing and cutting in windows late because didnt have actual dimensions until end of the day.

Prefabbed trusses for the win! So nice and goes up quick. 24” on center and we braced up every 4 feet for the sheathing and it really tied it together very tight. Money well spent.

After 2 long days of framing and sheathing walls and roof in 1/2” osb we made it to about the half way point of the existing garage structure. Gets hairy taking down the hip rafters!

The second weekend of framing/sheathing/wrap is done. Its amazing how fast the framing goes once you get rolling. And yes i put the wrap on backwards on purpose lol i wasnt sure how long it was going to be to get to siding, so i thought it would be easier on the neighbors. Put the old door back up temporarily, waited till everything else was done on the outside before putting up a nice new door!
Sorry bout the last one cant seem to get it rotated

Next was the siding and also to prevent a comercial look we decided to add to more windows and a second man. door at the rear of the garage.

First stab at laying shingles and i think it came out good, finished up siding and soffits being finished. Went with the huge oversized gutters that were made onsite and actually pretty cheap.

Threw up the new garage door and all the trim to get it air tight. Then skip ahead to the inside, i didnt take any pictures of insulation but sealed evry gap and put r19 in walls. Got free blow in insulation about 30 bags i blew in the ceiling which was a ton, rvalue somewhere in the high 20’s or 30’s according to the chart

Onto the inside i pulled new 100 amp service to garage along with gas lines. After all the debate on wall coverings i knew i didnt want drywall but wasnt to keem on the all the work to paint osb. I found 3/8 barn siding that was preprimed. Its strong for what it is and helps as sheathing. Sealed all gaps. Went with 3/8 sanded ply on ceiling and covered screws with trim. I feel that it came out pretty sharp. Will be a lot brighter once i can get paint on the walls.

And this is where im at today. Getting started on back wall which is diamond plated and then will be reclaimed barn wood from top of diamond plate up to ceiling. I do have a diamond plate shelf that was bent for between the windows. Hope to get paint on walls soon, but have to work around the stuff from storage that needed to come back.

OP, that garage looks very nice. You and your dad do good work. Impressive to see the transformation being done to that small garage.

Regarding the temperature needed for painting. The paint manufacturer will specify the temperature of the surface and air during painting and then for the next 24-48 hours. Check your paint instructions. I suspect you are using an "exterior" grade stain or latex type paint on the barn siding.

I have seem it stated in the past for exterior paint that surface and air temperature must be above 50F while painting and must not fall below freezing while drying.

I just checked the Sherwin Williams site and found this statement about new exterior paint application temperatures:

"Until a few years ago, painting needed to done when temperatures were going to be above 50° Fahrenheit. However, with advances made in waterborne technologies, products like Duration®, Resilience®, SuperPaint®, A-100® latex, in addition to WoodScapes® products can be applied when temperatures are as low as 35º F. Please note that surface, air and product temperatures must be at or above 35º F and that environmental conditions during and after painting need to be considered. Stable conditions and temperatures above 35º F are needed early in the paint's drying schedule. The first 48 hours could be critical to successful drying."

It will be near 50F in the Chicago area Friday and warm through Tuesday next week. This may be the last time to get the walls primed and painted before the normal Chicago cold weather arrives.

Good luck.

Good info thanks, figured above 50 should be good for a day or two. The garage is sealed very well and reached 60 the other day with just that small kerosene heater going for a few hours. No money for the gas heater this year, but next year it will be up.

Thanks to the weather and a small electric heater I was able to get garage around 70 degrees to start getting some paint on the walls. Its amazing how much brighter the work space gets with a little paint.

From looking at the pictures above could anyone be able to tell me where the best place would be for the heater? The gas line enters between the overhead and man. door at front of garage. Was thinking of a ceiling mounted heater. Thanks all!

That's a nice looking space you've built.

When I saw South Side of Chicago, I had to take a peak. Back in college, almost 30 years ago, I dated a girl from the south side.

Since the gas line is by the door, that usually dictates the location.
If your handy with threading black pipe, lets route the pipe away from all walkway areas and up into the attic!
If you could move the heater to the middle of the garage and to a point where no walkway air space will be obstructed, that would be the best area!
Middle close to the no window area wall, pointing towards the windows.

I grew up just east of you, former Hegewisch resident, lived just south of Wolf Lake...about a mile from the Indiana boarder.
Nice place to wrench, I like it. Interesting build.
I'd be very concerned about the place being looted!
Better get yourself a alarm system as soon as possible and put some plastic mini blinds in the windows!
Maybe a guard dog to scare away the punks.
Good luck keeping you digs secure...so glad I moved away from all the trouble down there when the gettin was good!

One wall done, now I can move everything against the wall and start to get all the construction tools out of the way.

Yup, looking good!
That shishkabob meat from that small deli place in town is called Drago's.
I actually never ate any...never got to try it.
Drago moved to Cedar Lake, Indiana (he knew the town was tanking too!)
He has a website for Dragobobs!...Check it out.... http://dragobobs.net/2-uncategorised

Awesome thanks! Many late shady trips there for that delicious mystery meat which i believe is pork and lamb. Ill check out new spot and check back in.
