TRADE UP TO A HUSKY....WISCONSIN PARTICIPATING HOME DEPOT STORES ONLY are saying specifically "Bring in any Craftsman hand tool and replace it with a brand new Husky tool for free. Offer Valid Through 1/14/18." Applies to in stock items only. If the Craftsman hand tool has no exact Husky brand replacement, Home Depot will try to find a similar item from the available Husky brand inventory. One tool item exchange per store visit.

This offer is for new, used, working, broken, missing parts, Craftsman brand hand tools/sets. YMMV. This is unlike long past promotions where the tool needed to be broken.

I would like to start this tread by saying I have just learned of this by accident, but have confirmed with home depot customer service, as well as my 2 local home depot locations. I encourage you to inquire with your local Home Depot about this offer. AFAIK this is the first and only thread on the internet discussing this, so I expect a lot of feedback from all of you dedicated members. This could be a good debate about the future of the Craftsman, Husky, Sears, Home Depot, etc., brands. What could be the benefit to Home Depot to take in a working tool, and giving away a new one free? Brand loyalty? Pushing Craftsman out? Killing craftsman warranty by extinguishing the tool itself? Is it Possible that the Husky line will end soon, to be replaced with a lower warranty tool line?

Now I have not made any decision myself if I will actually trade in my made in USA Craftman tools I started off with as a mechanic back in the early 90's. I have replaced them as they wore/broke. I have bought and used SO, MAC, MATCO, Proto, S&K, Klien, GB, Greenlee Cresent, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Rigid, Stanley, Wiss, Midwest, Husky, Kobalt, well enough already, you get it. I believe any tool is only as good as it is manufactured/engineered. I also believe the warranty is only as good as the company that backs it, and then the replacement tools manufacture/engineering applies again. Truth be told, I do not believe that the next 90 years future will not allow for us to bring in one broken tool and get the exact same tool, just by walking in to a retail store and handing it over. Will warranties change, not exactly, but the owners of the warranties will eventually change, and the methods used for warranty claims will also change.

I would like to ask you, If you do decide to take part in this trade-in promotion, to offer the rest of us your reasoning for doing so. I can think of many good reasons to go for it, but I would like to know what you are thinking. First time I started a thread BTW.

EDIT: I have received more information from my local Home Depot manager.

According to him, this promotion is target area specific. In my area it covers at least 14 locations, all in the southeast of Wisconsin. This promotion is from corporate Home Depot, but not widely available AFAIK. You will need to contact your local store to inquire. Your best chances are in markets with Lowe's and Home Depot in direct competition.

The manager told me this..."This promotion is in direct response to Lowe's recent deal, together with Black And Decker, to sell the Craftsman tool brand at Lowe's. Home Depot would like the owners of Craftsman to appreciate the quality, warranty, value that is directly comparable to the Husky line. By trading in, you would be giving Home Depot the opportunity to gain your trust and hopefully a reputation will be built to rival the Craftsman and Lowe's name."

EDIT #2
"The promotion is for participating locations in Wisconsin only", and "This is the only market offering this", as a trial to "test interest in such offers" involving the Husky tool brand, and brand loyalty to the Craftsman brand. The corporate office HD rep that provided me this information was well aware of the fact that S B&D paid 900 million for the Craftsman brand, Lowe's was contracted to carry the brand, and this..."Check your information" the HD rep said, "It is possible that in the near we look forward to offering the Craftsman brand and/or the Husky brand, or other promotions such as this". To which I replied, are you saying that Lowe's does not have a contract with S B&D that would eliminate the ability of HD to carry the Craftsman tool brand, and it would be not many years before such a window would be open. To which the rep replied, "It is possible that HD could carry the Craftsman brand in the NEAR future, but I am not saying if or when such a thing may or may not happen, but that in the NEAR future HD looks forward to that possibility."

The offer itself is only for "pliers, wrenches, ratchets, hammers, sockets, plumbing, knives, utility blades." Also, "One tool item replaced per store visit."

TRADE UP TO A HUSKY....HOME DEPOT First time I started a thread BTW.

This is also your 1st post period.

Welcome to GJ!

I'm not sure they're doing this in Canada but I'm not big on swapping out warranty tools anyway. The few I break have paid their way anyway and I just go out and find another if I don't already have several spares.

A rigger at work on friday dropped a ratchet 60' to the concrete and it broke. I don't know the brand, it was one of the new black finish ones. I'm happy with my old ones and my newer 80 tooth ratchets that I don't think would have broken (but you'd have to do drop tests 1000 times to be anywhere conclusive on this I know but just saying I don't put a lot of stock in all these new free replacement type brands) I'll keep my old ones.

So the trick is to find a Cman tool that the husky version would be a step up...

I’m thinking those crappy cheap round head ratchets that came in the bottom line kits

Looks like Home Depot is comfortable with its hand tool brands (Milwaukee, Dewalt, Husky) and ready to go to war with Lowe's/Craftsman ... GOOD!

Not really a fan of either, never was big on Craftsman, and if I wanted tools made in China I'd just go to HF and save a few bucks over Husky, so I voted won't use.

There is no net gain out of this deal. I have some USA made Craftsman and they are fine and see no reason to give them up for Home Depot tools.

Home depot did a similar thing many years ago when Husky was rebadged US made Blackhawk. Only back then you could trade in any brand tool for a Husky version. They had little plexiglass coffins in the tool section where they would place the mostly broken trade ins. I always wanted to rummage through the coffin. :bounce:
Can't really think of anything branded husky that I would want:dunno:

The only reason I'd do this is if there wasn't a local Sears and I broke a Craftsman and needed a replacement. But neither of those really holds true for me, so.

Got to say I have husky ratchets. Maybe ten years that came in a kit. Have replaced them under their lifetime warranty at least twice each. If I had working craftsman’s (as much as I hate craftsman brand) I would keep them

My craftsman tools are either stuff i bought 20 years ago when I first set out in my own in life and needed tools or I my dads tools I inherited. Not trading those in for some middle of the road Husky tools. Thanks but no thanks

Interesting... I definitely have some low-end, import raised panel Craftsman ratchets and breaker bars that could be trade-in (trade-up?) candidates.

What's the opinion on the current lineup of Husky ratchets?

A big chunk of my Craftsman tools, both at home and work, are pushing 40 years old and all work just fine, no reason to jump ship now.

I scored a couple hundred of those USA pro-series screwdrivers from a Sears Outlet. Now I know what to do with them!

I'd really be curious to see if this is legit. I've got a good friend who's an Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot and he's not aware of this promo.

As a first post , this sounds like marketing **** research to me.
That said I have some pretty worthless Craftsman tools that I might trade for shiny but similarly worthless husky tools to put on Craigslist.

Okay, I'll start a rumor that has absolutely no truth to it.

SB&D is going to start re-branding their Proto professional tools as Craftsman to resurrect the good name that generations of Americans have relied upon. Of course, with the lifetime satisfaction guarantee of Craftsman, you can simply go down and trade in your old, worn, or chinese made Craftsman tools and get new Proto quality Craftsman instead once they get the new Proto quality stuff on the shelves.

To keep this from being so much of a financial drain, SB&D has contracted with Home Depot to tap the trade in market early, to get the Craftsman stuff off the streets. They know that anyone that will trade in old for new will go for this, and save them trading up better Craftsman later.

How's that for some totally baseless mis-information?

On a serious note, the HD Husky stuff is a step below Craftsman to maybe it's equal. I won't bother to trade in broken Craftsman now for new; why would I trade it in for something lower quality?

It'd be good enough if HD would warranty their own stuff. I had a few broken Husky items and they gave me a real hard time about warrantying those; because there wasn't a direct match of newer tools to the older ones. I ended up not being able to warranty several, and I just threw them in the scrap metal, and discarded the ones they did warranty also.

damn, rough crowd. i doubt i will be trading anything in either but they do have some interesting things. i think that many of the ratchets appear to be spin offs of gearwrench ratchets with flex, locking flex and industrial finish options. i have been tempted to pick one up for a comparison/teardown. if they are they would be a good value.

Quite happy with my USA Craftsman. Don't plan on, what I consider would be trading down.
I don't use my Crafts man ratchets much anymore as I have moved on to SK some time ago, but I'll be keeping my Craftsman tools.

Is there something I'm missing? Whys everyone so pissed off :headscrat

They're not forcing you to trade in, only offering. If you have good USA made craftsman, keep it. The ****** Chinese craftsman however....

I ordered two flex head ratchets from craftsman this summer on sale, and one of them showed up and doesn't even work. The POS is just sitting in the box because the sears near me are all gone now and I don't really care that much (I have better ratchets) so I think I will go trade in my LH 3/8th flex head Craftsman and see what alternative Homedepot/husky offers me.

The Husky wrench I bought a year or two ago was totally out of spec. I ended up ordering a set of USA made wrenches from Harry Epstein and returning the Husky wrench to Home Depot.

I edited my post/thread to address your concern. I myself have only discovered this all 12/16/2017. I have no skin in the game. I am only a consumer. Just sharing. Sorry if any of this confuses or annoys anyone.

I keep my CM stuff out in the shed, and I use it out there. Of course it doesn't really have any sentimental value. I bought it all new in the late 1990's.

My main set of SK, Mac, Powr-Kraft stuff is in the garage. My super cheap stuff like Stanley, HF, etc. is in my trunk tool box.

Kinda like trading six apples for half a dozen apples. Unless the cm trade ins are broken there is no gain. Even then.....

I have not seen any evidence that Chinese Craftsmans are inferior compared to USA made Craftsmans. Regardless, I would not trade any Craftsman for a comparable Home Depot tool.

Ditto for me. I am no expert but from my causal observations it is not really an upgrade for the most part. It is a lateral move as long as you are comparing Asian to Asian mfg.

I have some of the gimmicky CM stuff that my wife thought might be cool. I'll call my local HD. If I can swap for semi servicable Husky stuff for the car trunk box, I might do it.
