That's $1.77 for each piece..It's so tempting since I just a credit card with no interest for a year....

I really wouldn't if you are considering this. My brother got a set of the CM China stuff the other day as a truck beater set and they really are junky feeling.

This set has the newer extreme grip type stuff (not personally a big fan of them), so the sockets will be the same fit and finish as China made sockets unfortunately. Also, looking at the item list, it appears some sockets are etched "easy read" while some are not. However, for someone with nothing it's a decent start I guess.

The 540 piece set - 49540 - is also a decent set and in many stores it seems. Currently priced at $799 though, and I've seen it at least once for $650 (the 50% off price).

Man I used to drool over the sets like this in the Craftsman catalog when I was a teenager in the mid 90's. Sad to know that it was all proudly made in the USA then but now has all been offshored to China.

Would be a steal if USA made. Especially with Craftsman USA prices now a days.

All current easy read sockets also have the regular stamping, so no big issue there.

I have some of the extreme grip screwdrivers and I really like them. The diamond tipped ends really do help grip stubborn screws better.

But alas, being all China and knowing the overall quality of most of those pieces is really a deal killer.

If anyone buys it, be sure to do an inventory check and also a quality check on EVERY PIECE right away so you can contact customer service for anything that is missing / messed up and get a replacement.

I ordered a set on Jan. 9th for $1,799. I finally picked it up at a Sears store near me on February 7th. Called them on the 9th and they price matched the $1,599. I got the set to replace a mix of tools in my shop that I lost to fire. I hope the quality is acceptable for a demented hobbyist!

I got mine in 81 or so, maybe 3500 but it had all the big, not much impact but metric and saw two and die to 3/4. It was kind of ***** and a lot of sockets busted, wrenches bulky but tuff. It got me out of a jamb, give me stuff to work with.
The 309 and 311 are good too and even cheaper but this 900 has a lot of the special wrenches, dbe longs etc that come in handy for the pro types, I use that stuff a lot. They are just the right thing for equipment work, nice to get at that kind of price.

The inflation calculator says $3,500 in 1981 is equivalent to about $10,000 now. ( :eyecrazy: ) Makes the current deal look like even more of a bargain for those in the market. :)

I was thinking the same exact thing. I remember the really big sets from the early 1990s Sears catalogs that I believe even came with tap & die sets, pry bars etc. Those USA made sets would probably be worth 4 or 5 times today what they sold for in like 1992.

Holy ****! We’re starting this thread again? Not that I disagree with it being a good deal, it just evolved into a real ***** fest when posted the other day.

Not sure about the other day... but I posted this over a week ago and updated the title based on the new proposed sale date end.

Not directed at you my friend. It just seems like anything Craftsman related simply enrages about half the people on this forum. KCTyphoon posted this or a very similar deal recently and you’d have thought he advocated clubbing baby seals to death while on the way to steal old people’s medicine.

I take no offense, just pointing out I changed the title as I thought that may have caused confusion.

I believe this thread was actually started first.

It was and then KC posted it in the general tools forum, which was not the best idea!
Someone made a suggestion that the op (me) should post it there, but I ignored it as I felt this is where it should it should be. Not sure who that was though.

Well I'm overwhelmed by how many pieces are going to need socket holders and organizers.

My dad bought me a Husky 36in tool box so I figured I needed something to fill it up as I has limited hand tools :)1521035658503.jpg

I see a lot of organizing in your future.

Also watch out with that much weight hanging from the toolbox key. You don't want it to accidentally break off.
