I needed a 50 foot roll of 10/2 romex. I checked Home Depot -$60. Wow, more than I expected, but I don’t do this everyday,
I checked lowes - $62. Ok, I guess that’s the going rate.

On a whim, I checked amazon. I’ve gotten out of that habit lately because their prices seem to be drifting up and HD and Lowes have typically been competitive with them anyway. Amazons price was $40 with free next day delivery with Prime.

That goes both ways, needed something a couple weeks ago and checked some local stores and no one had. Checked Amazon and they were $12 held off on ordering and was in a Walmart and saw them for $7.

Short rolls like that are usually a rip off. It's not uncommon to be twice the $ per foot vs a 250' spool.

Yes definitely goes both ways... I always check Amazon but they are not always the best price either.

I don't doubt that, but it's still a better deal for me than paying $200 and leaving 200 feet of it that I then have to store, move around, clean off, etc.

Thanks for the tip. I have been in the same boat on the 6 and 10 ga wire. I don't need the price break for 250 feet but hated getting ripped off at 50 or 100 feet.

I will keep that in mind. And delivery is so nice.

If it's something stocked and sold by Amazon (and not a third party seller using Amazon's platform), bear in mind that they constantly and automatically jack around with pricing to test what the market will bear. So if you order something, or put it on a list, don't be surprised if the price goes up or down later on.

I have Amazon Prime and I use the hell out of it, but some of the stuff that company pulls is downright infuriating. It's always worth checking around to get a good deal, especially on commodities like wire, but you also can't assume Amazon will be the best option.

I was at home depot ready to spend $66 on a 12 THHN wire 500 ft, the 100 ft is $28
So, the 500 ft roll about 1/2 the price per feet, but I would have to store the 420 ft of wire after this project and don't see a future project needing that for a very long time.
The spool is little bigger than I expected and won't fit into a drawer.

If you have alot of future projects then buying alot of excess makes sense. extra money spent won't be recovered, it's not like you can easily sell a roll of left over wire where someone would want unless you are giving it away.

Amazon does have some good prices on small rolls of romex, they sometimes match the HD price and sometimes it is even few dollars cheaper.

I’ve found you really need to check some of amazons stuff now because it’s not always what the description says, or a different manufacturer. Lots of Chinese stuff too, if that matters to you or not.

Amazon actually has a plugin for the chrome browser that will show you the Amazon price if you're looking at something on another website

Of course, haters are going to hate, but it works for me. Here is an example looking at wire at Lowes. A yellow bar at the top of the screen will drop down and show the manufacturer, model number and Amazon price. In this case, same exact thing at Amazon for $39.79 compared to Lowes $65.20

Just checked Ebay on the 10/2 250'.

123.98 Ebay Free Shipping
135.97 Amazon other seller Free Shipping, not prime
146.38 Lowes and Home Depot Lowes has discounts codes available on some things ($20 off $100).

Note that Ebay has no sales tax either.

Sounds like Ebay is worth checking.

I always check eBay and others too.

Tekton metric combo wrench set...
Amazon 42.97 plus WA tax plus shipping ( I'm not prime)

Newegg (for tools ?) 34.37 no shipping. Did charge me WA tax though which is a first

eBay was all over the place but the best was around 43.00

Typically on eBay or other sites that have 3rd party sellers, you'll get sales tax if they have a facility in the same state as the shipping location (assuming that state has a tax)

If they're shipping out of state, true. If they're shipping into the same state, sales tax applies.

But you are in Washington State, so it would be $42.97 + shipping + sales tax (on both the item and the shipping.)
Washington State Department of Revenue considers the shipping cost part of the sale. :wtf:

I'd generally agree, to check amazon as well. But there are some tips too... The blue and orange big box stores change their wire price periodically based on market price of copper wire, but they don't change it super often, as it's a hassle to keep changing it... The electrical distributors seem to change their pricing quite quickly, so if the price of copper just spiked, and your local electrical distributor is charging a fortune, check the blue and orange store, they might not have hiked their price yet. The opposite is also true...
For other electronics and stuff, I'm weary of Amazon, especially third party sellers. In my experience with them sometimes the products are no better than "business sellers" on e-bay. In my opinion, e-bay is becoming more like amazon, and amazon is becoming more like e-bay.

Actually the box stores buy huge amounts at a time and set the price according to what they paid. The supply houses set their prices to market price almost daily. So if HD buys a train load and it lasts them 6 months they sell it for the same price for that 6 months. If the market goes down, theirs is high. If the market goes up, theirs is low. When that happens the smart supply houses buy pallets of Romex from HD.

Don't be surprised if you order it and they ship you a 25ft roll.

Look at the customer images.
