My latest small project - pliers holder

I have been trying to reorganize my shop. One of the things I wanted was a wrench holder that fit the following criteria:
  • Wall Mounted
  • Space Efficient
  • Separate 'slots' for each tool

I didn't see any commercial offerings that really fit what I was looking for, so after a few days of modeling different ideas, I came up with this:

I formed a small "L" shaped shelf from 20 gauge mild steel, and epoxied a Harbor Freight magnetic bar near the top. Below that, I riveted a piece of aluminum T-track. Within the t-track, I put a series of hex bolts to act as adjustable spacers.

Heavier pliers rest on the lower shelf part, and the smaller pliers are held by the magnet alone. The hex bolts provide a slot for each tool to fit in to prevent it from flopping to the side, as well as making it easily noticeable when one hasn't been returned to its proper spot.

I have been quite pleased with how well it works. I am able to store 16 pairs of pliers and cutters in about 17 inches of wall space. I have thought of a few refinements that I will incorporate into the next one I build, but I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
Lee

Good idea! I keep mine in a drawer, with modified wire shelf rack to seperate them, but it would be nice to have a handfull wallmounted over the bench.

We just put up a lot of this wire shelving redoing my wife's closet. I had a eureka moment with the cutoffs. Guess I'm not the only genius in the crowd.

I have one of those HF magnetic holders, I might try a wall version too, peg board hooks are getting old.

I'm always looking for handier ways to store commonly used tools. This is pretty darn brilliant, thanks for sharing!

Nice idea!
I have many of my smaller pliers in a single drawer, using a bent piece of wire shelving, but not all pliers are the same thickness. Some flop around and some are tight in the wire.

I see no reason why I couldn't do a similar concept in a drawer. I already have one HF magnet strip, so it might be time for some mock-up.

I like this a lot. Any concern with the threaded rod digging into the rubber handles over time. Maybe you could slide some thin rubber sleeves on there.

That was my only concern as well. If worried about adding bulk, maybe put some heatshrink over the threaded rod. Or you could get real fancy and make up some smooth rod with the end threaded.

I made a drawer divider from a threaded rod, some 1 inch lengths of 1/2 inch pex tubing and dividers cut up from some engraving plastic that I had laying around. It works great. I can get all of my pliers into 1 drawer with room to spare for a few pairs which don't fit in the rack. .

I was thinking about this myself. What I did was probably more work that it is worth, but I like the result.

I found some 1/4-20 bolts that were not fully threaded, cut off the head, and then cut the threads down to the appropriate length. I used two nuts on the remaining threaded portion to lock it into the T-Track. A coat of paint, and it looks much better.

I have a few friends that want one made, and I want another, so I am going to be building a few more of these.
