Ive wanted a welder at home ever since my first MIG experience in junior high shop class. Took a few welding classes awhile back and that renewed my interest. Cost or space constraints have always made having a welder out of reach until a year or so ago when I began collecting tools by following sale prices. For better or for worse, I decided to add up my expenses to date. Thought it may be helpful for someone starting out.

These were the choices that I made and I'm not claiming they were the smartest by any means. Everything was purchased new, one could likely do better by shopping used equipment. Tubing roller was a luxury that I need for a project. I plan on picking up a 2nd grinder to keep from switching from grinding wheels to wire brush and building a small welding table, figure that will be another $100.00

Craftsman Welder $270.00 Sears
Gloves $25.00 Arc3
Helmet $45.00 HF
Clamps $15.00 Northern
40lb Argon $140.00 Arc3
Cart $26.00 HF
Ground Clamp $19.00 Northern
Wirebrushes, magnets, etc $25.00 HF
New regulator $89.00 Northern
Wire $14.00 HD
Grinder $32.00 Lowes
Portaband $75.00 HF
Tubing Roller $179.00 HF

Total $954.00

Awesome, let us know how it's working out. I'm looking into picking up a mig welder as well and have my heart set on a Miller 211. If I need to downscope then maybe a Hobart Handler 210 or 140. Haven't welded since 1980s and back then it was either gas or stick.

Be warned, you have only scratched the surface...welding can become an obsession if you aren't careful. I jumped down that rabbit hole about 10 years ago, and now have enough equipment to outfit a welding shop. I started out with a cheap Campbell Hausfield 125a MIG, then added a Lincoln 225 AC/DC stick machine....and that's where it went off the rails.

I now have 2x MIGs, 2x TIG/stick machines, 2x small portable inverter stick machines, 2x roll around bandsaws, 2x portabands, plasma torch, 2x sets of oxy/acetylene tanks, around 12-15x 4.5 & 7" grinders, 3x bench grinders, 4x vises, mag drill, notchers, pan/box brake, bench mounted shears, and probably close to 50+ clamps and vise grips....and welding is just a hobby.

Word of advice, start checking local pawn shops. I've bought the majority of my stuff from pawn shops, and have gotten some extremely good deals. Also, buy your MIG wire online, either through Amazon or eBay, as well as all your consumables...they are considerably cheaper online.

Not the Pawn shops around here (MD), look up MSRP and add 15%, that is how they price their used junk, they "may" lower it to MRSP if you haggle.

I would spend $650 on a new Hobart 190 or something similar from Lincoln or Miller, and then try to buy everything else on you list used for under $300. Check swap meets, pawnshops, craigslist and other sources of used stuff

I don't know which welder Sears has for $270, but you most likely will be disappointed with it. If you really want to go that route, buy a cheap used welder use it for awhile and then sell it when you upgrade to a better one.

You might even be able to find a used welder with an argon tank and save the cost of buying one.

Not that it couldn't possibly work but I got to think a 270$ welder from Sears may be less than satisfactory. Not a lot more than double that a guy could get a world class machine, a Hobart or Lincoln box store 180 which is very good.

That's exactly the experience I've had around here. I'm sure deals do exist, but your experience has been my experience about 100% of the time, so I no longer stop to look.

I have a cousin that is a deal looker, just got a like new,,, 1/2 of a 2# spool left on a 140 with 40 cf bottle and some other stuff for 150$. 180 200 class machines are a bit harder to find used, most that get them don't sell.

I'm using a Craftsman MIG 135M that I caught on deep discount. Started out running flux core wire and I wasn't super impressed. Set it on shielding gas and it is running much better, good enough for me to burn some wire and have fun. Regulator was wonky, so I upgraded it. I've read that upgrading the grounding clamp can help too.

Maybe I'll replace it someday if I outgrow it or it burns up, for now its fine.
