I recently bought this 3pc set of 5/16" taps online. The price was very good, damaged packaging discount.

My first reaction after looking at the bits was how cheap they seemed, terrible satin type finish, ok looking machining, and barely legible markings.

It was only after I inspected the bits that I looked at the packing that said "Made in China".

Didnt think VIKING made anything there, thats why I bought these in the first place, made in USA is all over there ads and even in the description online?

Anybody else have China mfg bits from VIKING?

I notice they are carbon steel. If I was so concerned with quality I would be looking at HSS taps. I agree, they sure try and make it look like they are made in USA. They are not alone. I bought a German brand of kitchen tool and they went on and in about German engineering and tradition of quality, yadda, yadda, yadda. It was made in China, though it was well made. How about American Eagle Outfitters, that imports everything the sell. They are all snake oil salesmen. Amazon often lists country of origen somewhere down in the fine print. Skip the advertising and look for that.

Thats just it, I dont think these are fakes, merely a economy line with "high carbon" alloy instead of HSS. 6PTsocket has a good point about material vs price.

I suppose this is more of a FYI or heads-up that VIKING has a cheaper China built line out. Buyer beware.

I didn't think they were real, but I did find them on page 69 of the Viking catalog.

I would guess they are authentic. Companies that claim to manufacture in USA have been known to have exceptions or at some point start to import. I think they can get away with any kind of general imprecise statement but as long as individual products are correctly marked they are safe. Many are trying to be deceptive and carefully choose their language. If it bothers you enough, I suspect they would take them back. It is a small purchase so as long as they cut well, I would keep them and look elsewhere next time. Don't forget to write an Amazon review. Sometimes that will draw a response from the company. You may not have a lot of options. US made taps and dies of maintenance grade have largely gone off shore. That leaves NOS or surplus.

Absolutely write a review, at least mentioning COO. Some people may thank you if they are concerned about where the tool comes from. I also thought Viking was 100% US. I care little about COO. However, I hate companies that try to muddy the waters. Be proud of the product you offer, give all the details, let the customer decide.

I'd at least try using them though. Amazon reviews with COO bitching, but zero relevant usage information are not much help. Post that picture up too, they do look like garbage visually, but maybe they cut good.
