I’ve been thinking about having my own thread for a while and finally decided to start it. In 2015 I rented my first house and the day I moved my father in law and his dad gave me some tools and smaller toolboxes. Since then I’ve been acquiring different tools at garage sales etc. Some of them I restored, sold or kept.

While most of these tools can be found in almost every garage of a GJ member, I still thought someone might enjoy the pictures.

I’m starting with a list of the tools and will be adding pictures soon…

2015

2016

2017
  • Plomb wrench picks
  • Ford wrench
  • RR anvil
  • Old tool catalogs
  • Craftsman Gray-red middle chest
  • Reed 203 ½R vise

2018
  • Athol 614 ½ vise
  • Reed 206R vise
  • Dunlap 103.23621 drill press
  • Craftsman 103.23130 (1948) drill press
  • Cornwell SR-2 ratchet
  • Craftsman ratchet
  • Craftsman punch
  • Craftsman toolbox with patina
  • Plomb picks
  • Craftsman Gray-red small box

Anyone is welcome to comment on this thread.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

These are the tool boxes I initially got from my father in law and his dad on the day I moved in my first house. The tools that came with it were mostly wrenches (Kobalt both standard and metric), deep and and shallow sockets and ratchets (old Craftsman), different old wrenches and sockets, hammers and screwdrivers and all sorts of other random tools. Unfortunately I don't remember each and every thing that was in there or what I acquired later. I also received a used drill gun which later stopped working after I used it quite a bit and I ended up purchasing a new cord-less Ryobi instead.

The workbench I built in early 2016. I considered multiple options, mostly a roller from Sam's club with drawers, but eventually due to cost decided to build a nice sturdy workbench myself with wood from HD. It cost me just a little bit over $100 in material and has the dimensions I need - 8' long, 30" deep and 40" high. I see the height as a big advantage, I don't like to bend over when doing my projects. Eventually when I moved a second time, I stained the workbench and use it as an outside workbench now.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

Charles Parker 955 was my first vise, I picked it up locally. The mail screw was broken in half ... how does that happen? One must use a lot of strength to do that. I had a professional weld it back together, cleaned up the vise and painted it with clear coat.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I found this Craftsman 5196 the same way as the Parker - through local newspaper. I almost missed the guy's phone call when I was cutting the grass and then told him I already had a vise. I still asked him for a picture and having no clue what this vise was, I posted a question on GJ. I was told for $60 it's a great deal and I picked it up soon after. I'm very happy I have it and it is the vise that is mounted to my workbench and that I use for my projects. I haven't seen any other for sale locally ever since. The jaws are in mint condition.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

This Hollands 53 1/2 was frozen, we had to heat it up to get it moving. It was all rusty. I cleaned it up and repainted.
Eventually I sold it locally. My heart kind of sank when the buyer took the vise and flipped it up side down scratching the paint telling me he doesn't care about it, that it will be a user vise...

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

Charles Parker 995 - another vise with a horn, 5". I had it mounted to the workbench for a while, but it was too heave to use for my smaller projects. Eventually sold to a collector in Texas.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I picked up this Wilton 930 Bullet locally. Did a wire wheel clean up and repainted. Used new jaws from Kevin Scott, he did a great job with them.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

This baby Wilton 920 came from a local garage sale, the same one where I got my Gray-red Craftsman roller and Kennedy roller. Paid $5 for it. Eventually it was shipped out to a GJ member in Italy.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

A Wilton C0 I picked up at a local garage sale. It was in really great shape, barely used. I eventually sold it to a guy who did a restoration on it (not necessary IMO), but did a great job doing that and then relisted it on CL.

Got this toolbox at a garage/farm sale, but sold it soon after I found the Gray-red Craftsman.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

This setup was purchased for $70 at a auto-body shop estate sale where the owner passed away. I cleaned it up, put plywood on the bottom and my wife cut new liners for me :) This tool box is a keeper. I was very happy to find it!

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

This Kennedy roller came from the same sale as the Craftsman roller. It was it good shape, but quite dirty. I sold it later as I decided to just keep the Craftsman and didn't need it, but it was VERY cool!

I think I paid $2 for this Ford wrench at a garage sale and gifted it to my father in law the same day for his Bday who had an old Ford at that time.

A rusty Athol 614 1/2. I later sold it for the same money I bought it for since I have other projects going on.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

After about a year I finally (after over a year) found another vise in late December 2017 - Reed 203 1/2R in great shape. Swivel base has been welded, but whoever did it, did a great job repairing it. The vise is marked PG&E.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

In May 2018 I found a Reed 206R - a big brother for the Reed 203 1/2R. This vise is a monster and is in awesome shape!!! Look at the jaws...

Still not sure what I'll do with it exactly (restore/keep as is...).

Cornwell SR-2 ratchet and another Craftsman ratchet from a similar time frame. I thought these were pretty cool.

Some random Craftsman toolboxes. The first one has quite some patina :)

This is another Gray-red Craftsman box I picked up in 2016. This one is made in 1972.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I've always thought these Craftsman 150 drill presses were very cool ever since I've seen them on GJ. I think those three levers on the right side are pretty cool. I was particularly interested in the bench model due to my garage setup.

Back in November 2017 I finally found a 100, but it didn't work out to meet with the seller.

In April 2018 I found a Dunlap 103.23621 on CL in Oregon. It was the closest thing to the Craftsman 150 that I found after a year! It was listed for 15 days and apparently no one was interested in it. I called a family member who lives close by and he picked it up the same day. In May he came to visit and brought me the DP. Very happy about it, but I need to get some spacers (details in https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7206576) for it to work properly, but it is a very clean DP. I don't think the motor is original.

Than you! The comments are a bit short at this point since they're written retro retrospectively. :) Future comments will be a bit more interesting I'm sure.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

While ago I came across a Craftsman 150 DP locally on CL. After seeing it in person and the seller being firm on his asking price, I decided to pass on it since it was pretty rusty.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

Couple weeks ago a Craftsman DP showed up on Marketplace. The seller was asking a high price and it had a modified motor mounting part and an added third pulley. I messaged the seller and they still wouldn't come to a reasonable price. I waited a week and messaged them again. They came a bit lower, so I went to see it. It was all there, a bit rusty. Main issue motor would only start if you pushed it. I got the price to a value that I thought was reasonable and picked it up. Finally after over a year I found a Craftsman DP that I was looking for! :)

Now I need to figure out what to do with the motor (replace capacitor), so it will be a project before I get this DP finished. As of now I have two DPs along with the Dunlap. Long term I probably will only keep one, but it will take a while to finish the Craftsman.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I took the motor off the Craftsman DP. Here's a detail of the modified motor mounts.

I also found another part broken in two pieces. My guess is that either the whole thing tipped over at some point or the damage was done when the guy was doing the mods for the third pulley. I'll never know.

I have not found anything else damaged. if I can find parts for a reasonable price, then I'll replace them.

My goal is to get the motor working - replace the power cord and the capacitor. I'm also thinking about repainting the motor.

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I opened the motor to get to the capacitor. I have not been able to find a capacitor that would fit the dimensions so far and at this point I would prefer to avoid placing a new capacitor outside the motor, so I'm researching what other options there would be.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392292

I found these two capacitors, but neither of them will fit in the space in the motor.

I also found a link on FB for vinyl to cover the rusty motor cover and ordered it.

I saw this Rock Island 597 at an estate sale back in 2016. It was snatched before I even got there...

Re: Honza's vintage toos, projects and picks

I removed the middle pulley so I can disable the DP and clean it.

I took the housing assembly off the craftsman DP. I have to admit with all the rust and dirt it was a lot harder than I thought.
