After 20+ years, I retired from my first career in the Navy and moved here to MD. AS I started my second career, I designed then built my new house that was finished in 2003. Unfortunately I quickly outgrew my garage in about 6 years. I finally am able to build my new Shop/Garage. I have been lurking around this forum for several years reading and learning from all of you. After I started my build I finally decided to start this thread to hopefully gain some additional recommendations as I move toward finishing the shop/garage. Thanks in Advance.
First pics are the second driveway being put in

Re: My New Shop/Garage Build

Lookin' good. Any details on the build? Size, etc...

Forgot the details:
I had wanted to build a 30x40, but with easement restrictions, septic reserve restrictions, and grading of the lot, the largest I could build was 30x34 within a reasonable cost.

Building will be 30x34, block foundation, 2x6 24 OC, 10ft walls, vinyl siding, Metal Roof, 16x9 garage door, one window and a man door.

Re: My New Shop/Garage Build

After some discussion with the county, I asked the mason to add an additional row of block, this will gain some additional ceiling height.
With almost 2 rows of block about the concrete I will clear 11ft for ceiling height.
Glad I was able to do this just before he added the J-bolts.

Subscribed.

That will be a nice looking when done. House already looks great.

What do you plan on using the shop for? Automotive, woodworking, motorcycles? What kind of tools will you be filling it with?

Looks good. I would recommend 16” or for wall framing.

Automotive & Bikes & whatever else?
I have planned to have 2 areas to have thicker concrete just incase a lift showes up in the future.
Currently I plan to move over my willys CJ3a, my Harley, Drill press, pedestal grinders, Belt/disc sander, welding table & welder.
Probably a majority of my tools, Not sure if I am going to get new tool boxes or move my old snap-on boxes over.

Re: My New Shop/Garage Build

Concrete poured on the garage floor, apron, sidewalk and steps off the side of the porch.
The floor includes 2 pads 10" for possible future lift.

I have not decided what to do for a floor finish.
I think I want to keep the look of the concrete, so thinking
I am leaning toward some sort clear sealer.
I like shiny so thinking Gloss finish or not sure to keep it the natural dull look.

The building went up fast. When the builder told me 5-10 days I was doubtful.
There were 4 or 5 guys on the crew + another 3-4 just for the concrete & block work.
Progress will slow down now that I will doing it mostly myself moving forward.

Back to Progress on the garage.
Wiring was slow moving then one of our ALR members loaned me his son to help out.
Journeyman electrician 10x faster than I can do getting these receptacles in.

When I was trying to lay the electrical circuits, I tried to think of anything I would possible want in the future. I hope I didn't forget anything.

I should have plenty of receptacles now.
23 120v 20A receptacles on 5 circuits
2 220v 40A for my welders.
And in case I win the lottery I also included accomodations for wish items
like plasma cutter can share the 220v with my welders
1 220v 30A for possible future bigger Compressor
1 220v 30A for possible future lift
1 220v 40A for possible future Heat pump

The R-19 insulation is going slowly. Working in the Heat alone is not helping any.

I was originally thinking to try and figure out what to do about the floor. I like the concrete look, so I guess I need a clear finish that won't cost me dearly.

Now with working in the heat, I may have change priorities and be looking for an affordable Heat pump.

Got sticker shock at the prices of insulation, plywood and drywall.
I guess I have been behind the times, been awhile since I looked at them till I started this build.
I sold my Softail custom to help finance this project.
Sorry to see her go but I wasn't riding her and on brighter side hat makes room for something else when I all down throwing $$$ in this building.
