I have a friend.

My friend writes books.

Very good books (IMHO).

And my friend's new book has a picture of the 12-Gauge Garage on the cover!

World's collide. Mind blown!

I pre-ordered it months ago, and it arrived today.

I have been reading Julian Edgar's stuff for a long time. He has contributed to, and been the editor of, various print magazines here in Australia. He was also the editor of, and main contributor to www.autospeed.com (there's not much new content on there in the last few years since Julian has been focusing on writing books, but the old stuff is well worth reading).

Having known about Julian for decades, I had the pleasure to meet him in person a few years ago, and now he lives just up the road.

I have no personal motive here. I just wanted to recommend a good book written by a good bloke; full of pictures of an awesome garage belonging to another good bloke.

They likely did not get permission to use the photo(s). Hope they did. I could not buy a book knowing that they stole some of the graphics.

That's what I was wondering...Jack has mentioned the image has been used without his permission before.

I used to post a lot of my photo stuff on Flickr, until one of my race photos ended up in an ad for brake pads. It costs a lot to go after theives - Jack has probably been through it all already. Like my attorney asked: "How much justice can you afford??"

They got my permission. They even let me approve the guy they Photoshopped into my garage. (Who is he? Is it the author?)

And it’s a good book! I’m out of town most of this week, but I plan on going through it a little more carefully when I get back from Canada. I got a copy, and at first glance I was very impressed.

Vindication for the new book! It's refreshing to hear when someone actually takes the time to get permission to use copyrighted material. I will look into getting a copy. I definitely need all the help I can get. :)

No idea who the guy on the cover is, but I don't think it's Julian.

There's some pics of Julian on his Amazon profile page...

Julian is above board, and I had no doubt he would've gotten permission to use the photos, but it wasn't my place to say.

Thanks for jumping in Jack.

Yeah. Over the years I "borrowed" many a picture from others but always got in touch for a permission to do so. It's no big deal and nobody but a jerk would spend the time and money to go after someone when they posted their stuff on the internet for all to play with BUT, it's the right thing to do !

Are you seriously friends with Julian Edgar?

Autospeed was my absolute favorite for years. There's nothing else like it.

Yeah, www.autospeed.com is awesome. I was a paid subscriber for years back when that was a thing, and I don't think there's anything on there I haven't read.

Reading Julian's blog (http://blog.autospeed.com/) many years ago, I heard that he'd moved close to Canberra to focus on teaching public servants how to write.

I'm in Canberra, and I'm not a public servant, but my job does involve lots of writing.

I contacted Julian and ended up getting him in to run several writing courses for the company I was with at the time.

Great courses, and I would (and have) highly recommend Julian as a trainer, as well as an author.

I don't see him often, but we talk semi-regularly, and I consider him a friend.

I'm quite impressed with writers that have the patience to go beyond an imagination or theory to pull all of the material together and sort them in away that meet a particular objective. It's probably much more difficult than writing a fictional book.

It's nice the author asked Jack's permission, first. I, on the other hand, didn't ask Jack's permission but I use his GJ avatar as my pic on several dating sites. It works great.
