Hey folks, I just got the last BIG piece of my puzzle. My build will be taking the chassis from under the ’82 GMC, building a new dump box for it, putting the ’03 Cummins between the rails, dropping the ’52 COE cab on them and then doing some body mods. It’ll be a few months before I start this in earnest, since I’m finishing core support rebuild/engine install on my daughter’s ’03 F-150. Anyway, I want to shout out to Austin Diesel Power Performance in Marne, Mi for working with me on getting these Cummins parts of the build. Looking forward to dealing with them more in the near future.

Should be a cool project for sure, and I love COE's! Hows the footwell space in that one, as confined as some of the earler ones? Or is the placement of the engine not going to matter/building a new floor?
I dont know **** about diesels

Bread truck sounds cool, but I need a work truck, so here I go.

The stock floor is almost flat...... for now. If I remember right, an '03 f-150 bench will fit and the floor doesn't squeeze in much. Time will tell. And I'm in the same boat, 2 sentences and I've exhausted my knowledge on diesels.

Just saw an episode of Vegas Rat Rods where they built one of these. Put the engine behind the cab so more people could fit up front. Love the COE trucks!!

Keep us updated.

Thanks everyone for dropping in and saying "Hi". I hope I don't disappoint

Was that the "Fruit Fly" ? Since I want to keep the dump box, I can't go mid-engine. It's probably going to make my life a little more interesting.

The ONTAP is a sticker and I don't know much more about the truck. I don't have many pics yet, but I'll gladly post what I have.

Neat.

Some old school buddies of mine have a high end rod shop local to me, they built this 54 COE with a Duramax chassis.

EDIT: No intention to distract from the OP's thread, I just recognized it was a similar year and wanted to share some inspiration.

That truck is sweet. I also saw it at this years Autorama. I would have liked to see under the hood and get a look at the interior to get ideas.

This build is going to take me WAY outside of my comfort zone, but at least I won't be doing anything stupid. Wait, maybe this is doing something stupid.:lol_hitti Thanks again everyone for dropping by.

More pics, as promised. As you can see from the last pic, I'm going to have to build an all new box as well.

While my COE is a 49 Ford, I used the same chassis (74 GM 1-ton reg cab longbed). MIne is set up with airbags and intended as a hot rod truck, but I have hauled a lot on the flatbed. Biggest load was 24 railroad ties, but lots of engines, trans, rearends, and other heavy stuff. I just went with the 350 SBC/T400 route since the chassis was set up for that. My engine is up front and about half under the floor, but I do have a big engine cover inside the cab like a van has. Could be less cover but I wanted to make it low and mounted the body closer to the frame. My engine is a total PITA to work on.

Nice project, have fun. I get constant questions whenever I drive mine around. Here is a pic of mine:

Thanks for dropping by. Your truck was one of the inspirations for my taking this plunge. You may not remember, but I picked your brain about a year ago. Two quick questions, should I post my build on the Hamb, and if so, where? Thanks for all your help.

I do recall now when you mention it and we talked about a year ago. I posted my build on the HAMB, but back when it did not have all the sub categories. While the engine choice you have is not HAMB friendly, the rest of the build will go over fine. Just mention the engine and minimize details of that part. Seems everyone loves COE's and so you get some slack on them :) My COE is certainly not a traditional truck build, but at least it is not a too street-roddy car hauler :lol_hitti

 if you skim over the late model cummins swap, ( i dont recall seeing any diesel stuff on there), and the relatively late model frame/ifs swap you might be able to skirt by since everyone likes a cab over engine truck, but theres been alot of huff about how some post '65 stuff has been given a pass lately so who knows. I left my buick thread in the general section since its not really a custom and its not a '31 coupe or the like for the traditional hot rod section, though i am keeping it all pre 1950.

What ever you do if you post over on the HAMB, DO NOT post it on the main forum as you will get the topic deleted. Join the COE group and post to that group only. What you are doing is not considered a Traditional Hot Rod.

On that note: DO please post more here.

EDIT: There is a Diesel group on the HAMB but yours fits into the COE group better.

Terry, I'm glad I reread you earlier post, it's making me think about serviceability on mine. Thanks again for taking the time to give me the great info back then.

OLD MX, I like that idea, though I'm known for always missing my deadlines. But still....

And thanks everyone for the "Hamb" advice. I'd have loved to do a Ford and built a flathead or Y-block for it, but they wouldn't have enough grunt for what I want to do with this. I still need a dump truck and my wife would like to see the US in a 5th wheel, hence the Cummins. The only way I could really justify this build is by telling myself and my wife that it SHOULD cost only a few bucks more than buying a new 1 ton dump truck, and we'll have something cool to drive.

This is going to be one cool build and I am along for the ride.

My son Trevor has a truck build going on right now that has a Cummins going in a 1-ton GM square body. He is going to be marketing a bolt-in cross member kit for putting the Cummins in the GM chassis.

I have maybe one more full build left in me and if I ever find a COE, this will be what I build as a daily driver.

I've got plenty of popcorn and time and I'm sitting here watching this one come together. Now get to work!

I like the show trucks trailer.
That shows imagination as well a fab skill.

Good luck on the build.
COEs are a rare breed.

The HAMB is a great forum but you can be left feeling out of place when your post is removed or they point out you are posting on a Traditional Hot Rod Forum.

Since he made the change a few years back, I don't go over much anymore. I can't figure out how to use the search feature efficiently. Where do you find the COE group?

It took me awhile to sign up on the HAMB since i personally didnt have any hamb friendly cars, but had been lurking around for years before. I do like that its as strict as it is, but theres been many times when someone will start a thread for an interesting project and it will get nuked for deviating in some area of it, thats why i like this section on GJ, just kind of a ,what are ya workin on' without any hard fast rules of what can be discussed. My '37 buick is going to be a pretty traditional car with only pre '50 parts and ive gotten alot of positive feedback on the hamb and the very spcific knowledge on there is immeasurable, but there are some cars i work on that i cant post over there.

I also have an AACA thread in the prewar buick section, again, an insane amount of knowledge over there and some real great guys, some of whome have even offered me free parts just to help get another old buick on the road, but there are some areas of the car that i'll skim over since theres alot of the stock or nothing/your ruining the car mentality. I prefaced my thread that it was going to be a modest/try my best with what i have build and surprisingly no ones given me grief about my cobbling of stuff or having to make my own running boards. Honestly ive gotten the complete opposite of what i was expecting from there, nothing but positive feedback and constructive advice.

Enough of my ramblings! I think its going to be awesome and its cool to see you using an engine platform your not familiar with to make you learn it and refreshing to not be an LS! 47-54s are my favorite trucks and a cummins powered tow/dump.rig is going to be cool as hell!

Stooge, good feedback. If they like me, cool. And if they don't, that's fine too.

Hotfr8, the link is greatly appreciated.

Grow. I like that, interesting. At least I won't be bored.

Spend some time on the HAMB as that will be the same format the GJ will be changed to. A little time to follow but much easier.

Say it isn't so. I used to be on the Hamb everyday, but when they changed, I couldn't find anything.

Thanks Slacker. I agree. I'd have rather gone a hopped up period correct engine, bu t I know there's no way it 'll have the pulling power I need. Do you have a ride/truck?

Interesting build! Wish I could do one with a 12v turned right up with compound turbos and F350 chassis to load my 72 bronco upon.

***** I need an acreage to do so and that requires winning the lotto!

Sorry. Eventually this format as it is out of date will have to change to the same format as the HAMB. Please trust me when I tell you it will be better for us all when it happens. Some times change is not easy but I can tell you it will be for the better.

Please post more update of you project as you progress as I am keen to see how it works for you. I have found the Cummins in my F4 fun to drive.

It's taken me a very long time to get to this point, just starting it. So, patience and maybe it'll come to you?

I'll just have to figure it out. Time to use the Hamb for practice, I guess. I'll probably PM you until I figure it out. For right now, I'm still collecting parts and trying to finish 3 other projects before this one hits high gear. But don't worry, I'm working really hard at collecting the major bits and pieces.
